The nurse sighed. “I can try, but Dr. Chandler doesn’t usually give pain meds IV.”

Call him and tell him it’s Ben Jamison’s daughter. Dr. Chandler was at a party held by April’s father just a little while back. He might do it for her.”

The nurse nodded. “I’ll call him.”

April’s heart filled with relief. She smiled at Caleb. “Thank you. I thought... I thought sure you’d make me take it. Thank you for taking up for me instead of taking their side.”

His brow furrowed. “April, I’m always on your side. I don’t want you to have to suffer if you don’t have to, but I want you to get better.”

She lowered her eyes. “I know. I love you.”

I love you, too.”

Caleb, are you... do you think... ” She cleared her throat. “Daddy said I needed a spanking for not paying attention on the road.”

Caleb’s brow rose in surprise. “He did?”

She nodded. “I don’t know what’s gotten into him. He’s never said or done anything like that before, but it hurt my feelings. Then I started worrying that you might think the same thing.”

He shook his head. “I’ve never noticed you being careless on the road. You don’t have a bunch of speeding tickets or other traffic violations. You weren’t drinking or anything like that. I think it was just an honest mistake. I don’t think you deserve punishment.”

April’s eyes refused to meet his as she remembered she had gotten two speeding tickets as of late she hadn’t told Caleb about, but since she hadn’t been speeding before this accident she refused to feel guilty. “Thank you, Caleb.”

He looked at her like she was a bit addle-brained, but he grinned. “You’re welcome.”

April bit her lip and donned her sunglasses to hide the tears that threatened as she pulled her coat closer around her trembling body and walked briskly down Short Street to her car. She couldn’t believe the judge had been so nasty to her. She’d only been going ten miles over the speed limit, but with her previous two speeding tickets and recent car accident, the judge felt she needed a lesson. How was she going to explain to Caleb that her license was suspended for sixty days?

She swallowed the lump in her throat and started to unlock her car when she realized with a start she would have to have someone else drive it home since she no longer had a license. She thought briefly about driving anyway but when she looked up and saw a cop car parked nearby she thought better of it. Had that policeman been in the courtroom? Her heart pounded and she leaned against her car to pull her cell phone from her purse, whimpering out loud when her mother didn’t answer her phone. If she was at the mall where she usually liked to hang out, she might not hear her cell phone ring for several hours. Her stomach souring, she called her father’s office.

Jamison and Associates,” the secretary answered.

Jane? This is April. May I speak to Dad, please?”

Hi April. Your dad’s not in right now. Could I give him a message?”

April swallowed. “Um, no. How about Cameron?”

Cameron’s with him. They’ve gone to a meeting in Frankfort. Do you want me to have them call you?”

April glanced again at the cop car. There were hundreds of policemen in the city. Unless he’d been in the courtroom when her license was suspended he had no way of knowing she was driving illegally and she’d give him no reason to stop her otherwise.

No, thanks. I’ll talk to them later. Thank you.”

April hung up the phone and unlocked the door to her car, sliding into the seat. Her teeth chattering both from cold and anxiety, she started it and turned on the heat, put it in gear, and carefully exited the parking lot. She hadn’t gone more than half a block when the cop car moved directly behind her and turned on its lights and sirens.

Let me get this straight. You not only had your license suspended for
three
speeding tickets, but then you got into the car and drove without them
right
in
front
of
the
courthouse?”

April could do nothing more than huddle miserably in the passenger’s seat of Caleb’s truck and cry. She’d never been in jail before. It had been horrible. And she’d never seen Caleb so angry in her life. She buried her face in her hands and sobbed.

When they came to a stop she raised her head and looked around. They were in the parking garage to Caleb’s apartment. Slowly she opened the door and followed him inside, thankful no one else seemed to be about since her eyes probably looked turned inside out by now from all the crying she’d done since her arrest. Caleb unlocked the door and led her inside.

Sit down,” he ordered and April moved to the sofa to obey. Caleb strode into the kitchen and pulled a Diet Coke from the refrigerator. “Do you want anything?”

April blinked. Maybe he wasn’t going to spank her after all. “Water,” she said.

Caleb pulled a bottled water from the refrigerator and handed it to her before he sat himself opposite her on the chair.

April,” he said on a sigh, “how in the world did you manage to get
three
speeding tickets?”

She sniffled. “Well, the first one I was late for class and we had a test that day. The second one I was trying to get to a hair appointment on time, and the last one... well, I guess I just wasn’t paying attention. I was only going ten miles over the speed limit. I thought they didn’t stop you until you were at least fifteen over... ”

They can stop you for going one mile over, April.”

She nodded. “I think it’s because of my car. It’s like they expect me to speed in it because it’s a sports car and so they watch me closer.”

If you think that’s an excuse, it’s not.” He stared at her until she lowered her eyes. “Why did you drive on a suspended license instead of calling me? I was two blocks from you. I could have walked over and drove you home.”

I... didn’t want you to know. I was afraid you’d... be mad at me.”

He sat his Diet Coke down and leaned forward with his elbows on his knees. “Your going to learn that I tend to be a lot more lenient when you confess to your misbehavior rather than let me find out about it by myself.”

Something in his eyes made April’s heart pick up in rhythm. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.”

I wish you had.”

When he stood to his feet, April came to hers as well, her heart thudding painfully against her insides as he began to unbuckle his belt. She watched in utter horror as he doubled the heavy leather in his hand. She’d heard tales of how her granddad used to punish her father and aunts and uncles with a leather belt and she had no desire to experience it.

Caleb... ” she pleaded, “don’t... please.”

Come here.” She shook her head and backed away. “April, I mean it. Come here.”

Her breaths came in ragged gasps as she walked over to her fiancé and stood trembling before him. He gently grasped her arm and turned her body to the side before she heard the buckle jingle and threw her hand back to protect her bottom.

April, move your hand.” She obeyed. “Keep your hand out of the way, do you understand?”

Yes, Sir,” she said through her tears.

She heard a jingle and then a swish before the belt wrapped around her butt cheeks with a loud smack, jerking a yelp from her throat. Another stroke quickly followed, setting her on fire. Sobbing hysterically, she fought desperately in an attempt to escape his grasp but found she couldn’t get away from the awful pain. Her heart pounding, she screamed and thrashed about while stroke after stroke of his belt wrapped around her bottom and thighs, her cotton jumper seeming to provide no protection at all against the agony. In her wildest imagination she’d never dreamed how painful a belt-whipping could be. Unconscious of her dignity or whether the neighbors might hear, she jerked and squirmed and danced about, her uncontrollable hoarse screams filling the room.

That’s enough! Caleb, please! That’s enough! You’re killing me! Ooooohhhh!”

When her knees collapsed until she was held upright only by his iron grasp on her arm, he pulled her to the sofa and bent her across the arm where he continued to blister her hind end.

Aaiiii... Ca... Ooooooh... pl... sooorrryyy... ”

Her voice gone, all she could do was sob for mercy while the belt continued to sear her bottom without pause. When the spanking finally ended after what seemed like an eternity she inched up on the sofa and lay on her side, her heart pounding in pure terror to see that Caleb still stood above her with the belt in his hand.

Ple... ase, no more. I’ll ne... ver do it again. Please,” she begged and sniffled.

He knelt beside her and cradled her face with his free hand, his thumb catching her tears and wiping them away.

Have you learned your lesson already?” he asked with upraised brows.

Yes, Sir,” she said.

Will you ever drive over the speed limit again?”

No, Sir... never... I promise.”

And when you know you’ve made a mistake will you keep it from me?”

No, Sir.” Her eyes went to the belt he still held in his hand and more tears ran down her face. “Please... ”

He stood and buckled the leather back around his waist before sitting on the sofa and pulling her into his lap where she cried and sniffled for a long time.

He sighed and kissed her on the head. “April, I hate having to do that but you gave me no choice.”

I know. I’m sorry.” She laid her head back against his chest. “Caleb?”

Hmm?”

Would you have still spanked me if I’d told you about the tickets?”

I probably wouldn’t have spanked you for the first one, April. I would have the second, but not like this. I would have probably turned you over my knee and swatted you a few times with my hand. You probably wouldn’t have gotten that third ticket, and so you’d still have your driver’s license.”

I’m sorry I was so stupid.”

I forgive you.”

CHAPTER 7

Mom’s going to have a fit when she finds out about this,” Cameron said.

April shrugged. “It’s my wedding. If I let her she’d invite everyone in Lexington and I don’t want that. I want a small intimate wedding, just me and Caleb saying our vows before God and you and Shoshana standing up with us.”

Cameron smiled and ruffled her hair. “You always did have a mind of your own.” He walked to the cabin window and looked out over the Great Smokey Mountains, the turning leaves coloring the hillsides in the hues of fall. “It sure is beautiful up here.”

April’s eyes shone with excitement. “I can’t wait until you see the little chapel where we’re getting married, Cam. It’s so... so quaint and simple. It’s breathtaking.”

Shoshana came down the stairs looking all pink and bleary eyed with sleep as she reached up a hand to smooth her bed-rumpled hair. Cameron met her at the bottom and took her into his arms where he kissed her lightly on the cheek.

Feeling better, Sweetheart?”

Yeah. A little,” she said.

Hungry yet?”

She wrinkled her nose. “Huh uh.” She looked around. “Where did Caleb go?”

He went out to get some lunch,” April said with an apologetic look.

Shoshana nodded, her face pale as she flopped down on the couch with an arm around her stomach. “Oh, I don’t know if I can stand this for nine months!”

Cameron sat next to her and patted her hand. “I don’t think it lasts the whole nine months, Sweetheart. At least I hope not.”

Shoshana nodded. “My sister was only sick for the first two months, but she was sick all day long. I’m glad I only feel this way in the mornings.”

The door to the cabin opened and Caleb came through bearing a large bag of fast food, the aroma immediately sending Shoshana running for the bathroom.

Shoshana walked out and sat next to April on the porch swing with a sigh. “Leave it to them to have to watch a football game. I’m so
bored
. I want to go down to Gatlinburg and go shopping or to Dollywood or
something.
Anything but a football game.”
