His ex-girlfriend had always been ready for him after a spanking, but Shoshana was not. He knew his wife looked at a spanking as real punishment rather than a game and he preferred it that way, but it took quite a bit of coaxing on his part to get her to respond to his lovemaking. When she finally did, however, he realized it had been well worth the effort.

Cameron left his contrite and comforted wife on his old bed and started down the hall to return to the party when his dad poked his head out of his office.

Cameron, I’d like to speak to you a moment.”

Cameron nearly groaned at his too-casual tone. His dad was obviously uncomfortable and he feared he knew why. With a sigh he went inside and seated himself in the comfortable leather chair in front of his dad’s desk and waited.

His dad put his head in his hand and stared at him from around his fingers, his eyes holding a mixture of amusement and despair. “I know I heard what I just heard... ”

I’m sorry you overheard,” Cameron said, trying not to smile.

What, er, did I overhear?”

You said you knew you heard what you just heard,” Cameron said.

His dad gritted his teeth. “Cameron, stop playing games! Did you just
spank
your wife?”

Yes Sir, I did.”

His dad stared at him for several seconds while Cameron stared back, his lips twitching. “And?”

And what?”

Aren’t you going to explain this?”

Explain what?”

CAMERON!”

Cameron held up a hand. “Okay. Just chill.” He took a deep breath. “Shoshana and I have a traditional marriage, sort of like Grandma and Granddad used to have. I am the head of our household, and with that comes the authority to punish her when she misbehaves. She misbehaved at the party and so I brought her up here... ”

... and spanked her,” his dad finished. He blew through his teeth. “Son, don’t you know you could be arrested for this?”

I’m perfectly aware of that, but Shoshana has been raised to accept punishment. She believes it’s right in the sight of God, and she’d never try to make trouble for me over it. Her father spanks her mother. Her whole family... ”

His dad’s head snapped up. “Caleb?”

Dad, I can’t speak for Caleb... ”

Is that what’s wrong with April?”

Cameron thought probably it was after having witnessed Caleb drag her into the pool house earlier, but he wasn’t about to admit that to his dad. “What’s
wrong
with April? I think whatever’s changed with April is
right
. She’s a lot easier to get along with and she seems happy. I’ll bet she’s not embarrassed you tonight the way Rona has.”

His dad flushed. “Rona hasn’t embarrassed me.”

Yes, she has. Don’t deny it. She’s parading around in a thong bathing suit and she’s made out with every boy in the pool. To be honest with you, Dad, I don’t know why you put up with it, especially knowing how Granddad raised you.”

His eyes slid away from Cameron’s. “Times are different now. Your mother... ”

... needs a spanking,” Cameron finished.

Cameron Jamison!”

Cameron merely raised a brow. “Was there anything else you wanted to talk to me about?”

His father sighed. “I guess not.”

Shoshana woke a bit groggy and noticed it was dusk out. Rising from the bed, she straightened it before she stumbled out into the hall toward the bathroom. She opened the door just as April came out, a towel on her head.

Are you feeling better?” April asked. Shoshana felt her face flush as she nodded. “Me, too.”

You were ill?” Shoshana asked as she moved into the bathroom to splash water on her face.

No. Caleb spanked me.”

Shoshana’s hands froze and the water drained between her fingers. “He did?”

April moved back into the bathroom and shut the door. Moving her robe to the side, she showed Shoshana her bottom that had several faint handprints still imprinted on it.

She met Shoshana’s eyes in the mirror. “It was awful.”

Shoshana nodded. “I’m sorry.”

I’m not. I’ve never felt like Caleb loved me until today. He even told me he loved me. It was worth it... not that I’d want to get another one.”

I know what you mean.”

Cameron spanked you, too, didn’t he?”

Shoshana sighed. “Yes. How did you know?”

Caleb said you all were arguing, then you disappeared, and then Cameron came back outside without you and said you didn’t feel well. It wasn’t hard to guess. Did it hurt?”

Shoshana’s widened eyes flew to April’s. “
Yes
.”

April snickered and Shoshana’s brow furrowed. “I’m sorry, Shana. It’s just too weird... two grown women talking about their spankings.”

Shoshana smiled, though she still didn’t feel like it. “Yeah, I guess so.”

I’m going to go get dressed. You’d better hurry. The fireworks are getting ready to start.”

Shoshana watched April go before she closed the bathroom door and splashed her face with water again. Her eyes still appeared faintly red, but she did look like she had a headache rather than a sore bottom. She turned and gingerly raised her skirt. Her bottom bore
several
red rimmed markings from Cameron’s paddle. She shuddered. That was an experience she never wanted to repeat.

April leaned back against Caleb on their blanket in the field while they peered skyward at the fireworks display. His arm came around her waist and she snuggled closer. Since his earlier discipline of her she’d not been able to get enough of him, and he seemed just as eager to be near her.

She turned and kissed his mouth. He stared down at her with a peculiar expression on his face and kissed her back.

Marry me,” he murmured.

Her heart leapt. “W... what?”

I said... marry me.” He cleared his throat. “Will you marry me?””

YES!” She knocked him onto his back with her own weight when she threw herself against him to kiss his smiling mouth. “Yes,” she whispered and kissed him again.

CHAPTER 6

No! I don’t want it done! Leave me alone!”

Caleb rushed down the hospital corridor toward the sound of April’s voice, breathing a sigh of relief she was well enough to argue.

April, you have to let them draw your blood,” he heard Mr. Jamison say.

It’s my body! I don’t have to let them do anything!”

Miss Jamison, we can’t take care of you if you refuse to let us,” another voice said.

I don’t want you to take care of me! I just want to go home!” April cried.

Caleb hurried on into the room to see a phlebotomist and a nurse standing over his fiancé, who wore a stony expression on her bruised face, along with her worried parents who stood on the other side.

April, please... ” her mother said before her head snapped up when Caleb walked into the room. “Oh, thank God.”

Caleb nearly turned to look behind him.
Thank
God
? His future mother-in-law had
never
been happy to see him before. He walked over to take his fiancé’s hand while Mrs. Jamison shamelessly tattled on her daughter.

Caleb, they need to run some tests but April won’t let them draw her blood.”

Caleb’s eyes slid to April’s pitiful face which no longer wore its stony expression, and he raised his brows in question.

A lone tear raced down her cheek, her expression pleading. “I don’t want my blood drawn. I hate needles.”

Caleb sat in the chair next to her bedside and put a hand on her head to smooth her hair. She looked so beat up he hated to make her endure even more pain, but he knew it had to be done. “Sweetheart, they have to draw blood to be able to tell how to treat you, so you have no choice. It’ll be over in just a minute and I’ll be right here with you. Do you want me to hold your arm for you so you won’t jerk?”

She swallowed and nodded. His heart nearly broke from the resigned expression on her face. He looked up at the phlebotomist.

Are you good at this?”

I do ‘em all day long and rarely miss,” she said.

He nodded. “Okay. Do it fast.”

April closed her eyes while he straightened her scratched up slender arm and held it firm. It looked so small and vulnerable he nearly cried. She hissed when the needle went in and he closed his own eyes, but it was over quickly and a Band aid placed on her wound. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when the phlebotomist left with the blood.

Mr. Jamison walked over to shake Caleb’s hand. Since the night of the July 4
th
party he’d treated Caleb with much more respect, almost as an equal. He’d even given him a promotion at work. Caleb would have figured it was because of his engagement to April, but they hadn’t told her parents until at least a month later. He mentally shrugged.

Thank you,” the older man said. “You’re the only one that can do anything with her.”

Caleb’s eyes slid to his fiancé who looked so small and pale in the hospital bed. “How did it happen?”

Evidently she was driving on Nicholasville Road and changed lanes without looking. The people in the other car weren’t hurt, thank God.” His throat worked convulsively up and down for a moment. “April had her seatbelt on or it could have been much worse. The airbag caused most of the bruises, but the doctors are more concerned with her broken ribs. They’re not sure yet if one of her lungs was punctured. They’re still running tests.”

Caleb blew through his teeth. “Thank God it wasn’t worse.”

Mr. Jamison’s gaze slid to his daughter and back again, a look of regret in his eyes. “April’s not a good patient. Never has been.”

I’ll stay here with her and make sure she does whatever is needed to help her get better.”

Mr. Jamison nodded and slapped him on the shoulder.

By evening April was worn out from all the doctors and tests. The mere act of moving about caused horrible pain, and she’d had to transfer from stretcher to stretcher nearly all day. Thankfully they’d learned her lungs were not punctured, but she had to spend the night in the hospital anyway just for observation. She gave Caleb a little smile. He’d sat at her bedside all day long and now planned to spend the night. She didn’t know what she’d do without his strength. He caressed her hair while she allowed herself to drift off to sleep.

Caleb was gone when she was awakened later by another nurse bearing a needle. Her heart sped up and panic rose in her breast. She couldn’t do it. She couldn’t stand anymore.

I don’t want it!” she cried. “Why do I have to have it?”

Honey, its for your pain,” the nurse said.

I’d rather hurt than have a shot,” she said.

The nurse’s voice was firm but gentle when she spoke. “It’s been proven that pain slows healing, plus you could get a lung infection from your shallow breathing caused by the pain. You really need to let me give you this. It won’t take but a second.”

But I don’t want... ” Her head snapped up when she noticed Caleb standing at the bottom of her bed and her eyes filled with tears. He would make her take the shot and she didn’t think she could stand it. “Caleb, I don’t want another shot.” His mouth tightened and he came around the bed. “Please... don’t make me take it.”

He looked at the nurse. “Why can’t you put that through her IV?”

The nurse’s eyes held regret. “The doctor ordered it IM. I’m sorry. I can only administer it in shot form.”

Isn’t there a pill she can take?”

He didn’t order anything but regular Tylenol and that’s not going to be strong enough. She needs to get her pain under control.”

Could you call him and ask him to let you give it through her IV?” Caleb persisted.
