David?” Shoshana had a faint memory of a quiet, red-haired man who’d sat in the corner at the Bible Study. “I just barely remember him.”

Caleb sat his Diet Coke down on the table and sighed. “Well, you made an impression on him evidently. He called me this morning and wants to come visit you.”

Caleb... I... ”

Cameron shook his head. “Huh uh. Absolutely not,” he said. “I know David from way back and he’s not the kind of guy you’d want around Shoshana.”

Caleb’s brow furrowed. “Why not? He seems like a good guy. You knew him before he was a Christian. I’ve not seen anything to make me think there’s a problem with him.”

Cameron’s jaw clenched. “Fine. Do what you want.”

Caleb, tell him I really appreciate it, but I’ve not had a chance to get settled in yet and I really don’t know him. Maybe later, okay?” Shoshana told her brother. Cameron flashed her a smile complete with dimples. She nearly spilled her drink.

CHAPTER 2

Cameron was exhausted. It had been a horrific week at work. He loosed his tie as he stepped into his apartment. It smelled of something spicy. He was getting too used to having Shoshana around. He’d become quite fond of her.

He went back to his bedroom and flipped on the light. The bed was made and all his clothing hung neatly in his closet. Removing a t-shirt from a hanger, he caught a whiff of the clean fabric as he pulled it over his head. He hadn’t had to take his stuff to the laundry since Caleb’s sister arrived.

They’d just finished their chicken quesadillas when the doorbell rang. Cameron nearly groaned when he peered out the peephole and saw that it was April and Stacy, but he opened the door nonetheless.

Hey, Babe,” Stacy said, running a hand over his chest as she passed.

April glanced about the living room. “Where’s Caleb?”

He went to change clothes,” Cameron told her. “You all just have a seat. I’m going to help Shoshana clean up the kitchen and then I’ll be in there.”

Shoshana nearly had the table cleared when he returned. “Who’s in there?” she asked.

April and Stacy.”

Oh... Cameron, you don’t have to help with this. I’m used to doing it by myself when it’s my turn at home and we don’t even have a dishwasher. You’ve worked all day. Go on and I’ll finish up.”

I want to help,” he told her. He finished clearing the table while she rinsed the plates and loaded them into the dishwasher.

Truth be known, he dreaded going into that living room. He and Stacy had done nothing but argue since she discovered Shoshana lived there. Maybe she sensed the contrast between herself and Caleb’s little sister was making Cameron like her less and less. He couldn’t even remember anymore why he’d started dating her except that she was April’s roommate and thus convenient. He sighed. Stacy was beautiful on the outside, but her heart was not where it needed to be.

Shoshana closed the dishwasher and smiled at him as she smoothed back the tendrils that had escaped from her ponytail. His heart warmed. She was adorable.

Thank you, Cameron.”

You’re very welcome.”

You go on in there if you want. I’m going to cut some of this pound cake and bring it.”

His stomach souring, he went to face his girlfriend.

Caleb sat on the sofa with April clinging to his arm. A sitcom played on the big screen tv, but no one seemed to be paying any attention. Cameron sat in the chair rather than on the love seat with Stacy. He saw her lip droop almost imperceptibly in a pout.

Shoshana emerged from the kitchen with a plate filled with pound cake and placed it on the coffee table. “Would anyone like something to drink?”

Caleb sat up and pinched a bite of cake. “Diet Coke sounds good.”

Anyone else?” she asked.

Cameron shook his head. “I’m still stuffed from dinner. Thanks.” Both girls declined as well. Shoshana brought Caleb’s Diet Coke and handed it to him before she started down the hallway toward her room.

Where are you going?” Cameron asked.

Um... I just thought I’d go back here to my room and give you all some privacy.”

There’s no need. We’re just sitting around. Come sit with us,” he said.

Shoshana smoothed her hair again and dusted some stray flour from her lavender flowered skirt before she moved into the living room to sit on the love seat next to Stacy. He saw Stacy’s lip curl ever so slightly.

So you start your job on Monday?” April asked.

Yes,” Shoshana said, “I’m very excited about it.”

Stacy snickered. “The guys are going to miss their little slave.”

Shoshana’s eyes shot to Stacy’s. “It’s only a part time job, so I should still have time to keep the house. But I don’t feel like a slave. I enjoy taking care of a home.”

Stacy folded her arms across her chest. “What are you going to do when this job ends, Shoshana? Have you thought about college or a career?”

I have taken some classes at the Community College back home. I might go back, but I’m not sure yet.”

So your whole ambition in life is to snag a husband and raise a pack of children?”

Shoshana’s face flushed and her chin came up. Cameron almost grinned. He’d never seen her angry before. “There is nothing wrong with that,” she said.

There’s
everything
wrong with that,” Stacy insisted, “You’re betraying women and everything we’ve worked to accomplish by choosing not to work and contribute to society.”

I don’t think I’m betraying women. Our main purpose in life is to care for our husband and children and home,” Shoshana spoke quietly.

Stacy’s face spoke her amusement. “Oh, puh-leese. You sound like a woman from last century. It’s out of place in modern times.”

Two spots of color flagged Shoshana’s cheeks and her eyes flashed. “Stacy, if you want to act like He-Man and dress like a hoochie-mama, that’s your business, but don’t try to tell me how to live.”

Stacy gasped and bared her teeth. “I can’t believe... ”

Shoshana, that’s enough,” Caleb barked at the same time. “Go to your room.” Shoshana rose from her seat, her teeth set, and moved stiffly down the hallway to her room where she slammed her door, rattling the walls. Caleb’s jaw clenched.

I can’t believe she said that!” Stacy said.

I think you need to go home,” Cameron put in. He couldn’t stand the sight of her at the moment.

Stacy’s mouth opened and closed. “But I didn’t... ”

I think that’s a good idea,” Caleb agreed. “Sorry, April.”

April stood to her feet a bit shakily. “Okay, Caleb. We’ll see you soon. Are we still planning to go out to dinner after church on Sunday?”

I don’t know,” Cameron said, “we’ll let you know.”

Stacy had tears floating in her gorgeous eyes, but they failed to move Cameron. “Goodbye Stacy.”

I’ll see you soon?” she asked.

I’ll call you.”

Caleb growled after they left, his face still showing anger. He opened the door of the hallway closet and started to search through it. Cameron couldn’t imagine what in the world he wanted in there. Shock tore through him when his friend came out with their old frat paddle.

What are you doing?” he asked.

I’m going to spank Shoshana,” Caleb said as if Cameron should have known.

Spank
Shoshana!
Why
?”

She knows better than to let her tongue run away with her like that,” Caleb said. “Then she slammed her door when I told her to go to her room. She knows she’s got it coming. She’d be shocked if I didn’t give it to her.”

But it wasn’t her fault. Stacy was nasty... ”

Stacy was nasty, but Shoshana is responsible for her own tongue.”

Man, cut her a break. She’s the nicest person I know.”

Doesn’t matter. A lot of training has gone into making her the nicest person you know. I’m not going to let it slip now.”

Caleb started to move past Cameron but he stepped into his friend’s path. “Move out of the way, Cam. This is not your business.”

You can’t spank her with that. You’d kill her.”

Caleb looked at the paddle and his mouth tightened. “It’s all I’ve got. I’ll just have to be careful. I don’t want to have to use my belt.”

Wait,” Cameron said, holding up a hand. “Just give me a minute.”

Cam... ”

No, wait just a second.”

Cameron strode to his bedroom and pulled a paddle from the back of his underwear drawer and brought it to Caleb. “I, uh, used to have a girlfriend that liked to play around,” he explained at Caleb’s questioning look, feeling himself flush to the roots of his hair.

Caleb looked at the smaller paddle. It was made of ½ inch stained wood, oval, about the size of a man’s hand, and had a handle with a leather loop for hanging. With a nod he handed Cameron the frat paddle.

Thanks,” Caleb murmured as he started down the hall.

Cameron put the frat paddle back into the closet and sat on the couch. He heard Caleb knock on Shoshana’s door and her tearful reply before her brother went into the room.

He put his head in his hand, his stomach churning. He’d been in a domestic discipline relationship about three years ago. It was introduced to him by his then girlfriend, and he found he liked the whole concept. The problem was his girlfriend was on drugs and the relationship didn’t work out. He knew, though, that the little paddle he’d given Caleb could cause a lot of pain if his ex-girlfriend’s reaction to it was to be believed.

He could hear his friend’s deep tones intermingled with Shoshana’s tearful ones. Then he heard a loud smack and closed his eyes. Several smacks passed before he heard the first peep out of Shoshana, but soon her sobs grew louder.

Caleb,” he heard her sob high in her throat. “Please! I’m sorry. Please, stop!”

The smacks continued on. High pitched squeals intermingled with her sobs. “I’m soorrry... Oooohhh... Lord help me! Caleb, pleeaase... ”

Cameron wanted to cover his ears. He set his heart toward going over to Stacy’s dorm and breaking things off with her. As he rose from the couch, the spanking finally ended and Caleb emerged looking completely unruffled. Cameron wanted to punch him in the face.

Where are you going?” Caleb asked.

I’m going over to Stacy’s,” Cameron said. “I’ve had all I can stand of that woman.”

Could you wait just a minute? Shoshana has something she wants to say to you.”

Cameron frowned. “Sure.”

He sat on the couch while Caleb went to his room, the apartment silent except for Shoshana’s continued sobs. Finally those quieted as well and her door cracked and opened.

She padded on bare feet to stand in front of Cameron. Her eyes still leaked tears and her nose and cheeks were reddened. She swiped at her nose and sniffed before sitting on the floor at his feet.

Her voice was so quiet Cameron had to strain to hear. “I... I wanted to apologize to you... for the things I said to your girlfriend. It was uncalled for and I’m... s... so... sorry. Please f... forgive me.”

Cameron’s heart turned over. Without thinking, he grasped her upper arms and pulled her into his chest. She melted against his body and sobbed. “I’m so embarrassed... I never meant to act like that... I don’t know why I did... ”

Stacy was nasty to you,” he said.

He felt her nod against his chest. “But that was no excuse for me to be nasty. I hope you can forgive me.”

Cameron sighed and buried his face in her hair. “I forgive you.”

She pulled away and looked into his eyes before lowering hers. “Thank you.”

I’m, uh, going to go over to Stacy’s right now... ”

Oh,” she said, still not looking at him.
