I’m going to break up with her. I might be awhile.”

Her head snapped up at that. “Oh, no... please. I’m so sorry.”

It’s not because of you, Shana. She’s the one at fault. I’m surprised I was able to stomach her this long.”

They ran into Stacy and April at church on Sunday morning. Stacy looked awful. Her skin was pale; her eyes were red. She looked like she hadn’t slept in days. Shoshana’s heart went out to her until the other girl gave her such a venom-filled look she nearly gasped. Nonetheless, Shoshana apologized to Stacy the minute she found opportunity. Of course the apology was not accepted at all, but at least the deed was off her conscience.

Caleb, Cameron, April, and she went out for dinner after church service ended. April was much more pleasant when she wasn’t around Stacy.

Cam,” April said quietly when they were seated at their table, “I’m worried about Stacy. She’s pretty torn up about all this.”

Cameron’s eyes hardened. “There’s nothing I can do for her, April. I don’t want to be with her anymore.”

But Cam... ”

That’s enough, April,” Caleb said.

April turned to Caleb, nostrils flaring. “You don’t have to be so hateful.”

Caleb looked resigned. “I was not being hateful. I just told you to stop nagging Cameron and I meant it. We’ll get up and leave right now if you say another word about it.”

April gritted her teeth and stared heatedly at Cameron who smiled in return. “I am so sick of you telling me what to do,” she said to Caleb through clenched teeth.

You can get used to it or you can stop hanging around. Your choice.”

April’s eyes sparkled with tears and her hand shook as she picked up her drink to take a sip. Shoshana felt sorry for her.

April, tell us about Cameron when he was a child,” she said.

Oh, no you don’t,” Cameron said.

Well... we used to play Batman and Robin and he always got to be Batman... ” April began.

CHAPTER 3

Yes, Mrs. Waltman. The home study should be finished in another day or two and then we can... yes, Ma’am. I will. Thank you, Mrs. Waltman.”

Shoshana hung up the phone and turned in her swivel chair to find April waiting for her in the lobby.

Hi, April,” she said tentatively. It was very odd that her brother’s girlfriend should be here this time of day when she had classes scheduled at school.

April smiled sadly. She had tears glimmering just behind the surface of her eyes. “Shoshana, do you have time to have lunch with me? I’d like to talk to you.”

Um... sure. I haven’t taken my lunch break yet. Just let me call Caleb and I’ll be right with you.”

Why do you have to call Caleb?” she wanted to know.

I need to let him know where I’ll be in case he tries to reach me. Where do you want to go?”

April sighed. “How about CiCi’s Pizza?”

Sounds good to me.” She dialed the work number for Caleb’s office and waited for him to answer. “Caleb? This is Shoshana. I just wanted to let you know I’ll be going out for lunch today with April. We’re going to CiCi’s Pizza and I should be back here at the office in about an hour... um... ” Shoshana looked at April. “Caleb wants to know why you’re not in class.”

Tell him I’m a grown woman,” April snapped.

I heard,” Caleb growled on the other end of the phone.

Bye, Caleb. Love you,” she said and hung up.

Shoshana climbed into April’s little white Mercedes and buckled her seat belt. The car smelled of expensive perfume. April climbed into the driver’s seat, the mini skirt she wore climbing nearly to her hips. Shoshana averted her eyes, embarrassed for the other girl. They drove in silence until they reached the restaurant and filled their plates along the buffet line.

Shoshana began to nibble on her pizza but she was dying of curiosity to know why April wanted to speak with her.

I wanted to talk to you about Caleb,” April said in a near whisper.

Shoshana frowned. April seemed close to tears. “Is something wrong between you two?”

There’s always something wrong between us,” April sighed. She blinked several times. “I don’t know what to do.” A tear rolled down her face which she quickly dashed away. “I love him so much, but I don’t think he cares a thing about me.”

April, I don’t think that’s true. If he didn’t care about you he wouldn’t be going out with you. He’s not been raised to date casually.”

But he never says he loves me. He never talks about marriage. I don’t think he plans on having a future with me, and I can’t handle this anymore. I just wanted to see if you knew anything about what he was thinking.”

Shoshana stopped chewing in mid-bite, her stomach churning. She swallowed hard. Of course she knew what Caleb was thinking. She thought the same thing. But to say those things out loud to Cameron’s sister? Shoshana didn’t know what to do.

Please, Shoshana. Don’t worry about hurting my feelings. If you know what it is Caleb doesn’t like about me please tell me.”

Shoshana put her pizza aside and took a drink of her soda. “April, you have been going out with Caleb for almost a year now. Hasn’t he told you anything about what he expects in a wife?”

April shook her head. “Please tell me.”

There’s just so much... ” Shoshana began. April’s eyes filled with tears. “I mean... I didn’t mean that like it sounded.”

Don’t worry about my feelings. Go ahead.”

Well... first of all, when he asked you why you weren’t in class... ”

Yes... ”

You were very disrespectful. Caleb would never marry someone who speaks to him that way.”

But he’s always trying to boss me around,” April complained.

Yes, I’m sure. He’s a man and he expects to lead in his home. The Bible does say that a wife is to submit to her husband, reverence her husband, obey her husband... ”

April held up a hand and nodded. “You mean I should just let him tell me what to do?”

Well... yes. If you want to be his wife.”

I don’t think I could do it,” April said.

It’s not easy, but you should pray about it and let the Lord help you. That is, if you want to.”

April lowered her head and rubbed her temples. “What else?”

Well, that’s the main thing,” Shoshana said.

But that’s not all.”

I’m sure Caleb doesn’t care for how you dress,” she plunged in.

No, he doesn’t. We’ve argued about it, but I should be able to choose how I want to dress. There’s nothing wrong with wearing what’s in style.”

Shoshana raised a brow. “You asked. Remember?”

Yes. I’m sorry. Is there anything else?”

Shoshana sighed. “Only being humble and obedient, seeking the Lord for a meek and quiet spirit, a willingness to put your husband and home and children above your career, and... ”

And?” April prompted.

Shoshana’s mouth dried but she continued. “A willingness to submit to punishment should you earn it.”

Submit to punishment,” April repeated slowly.

Uh huh,” Shoshana nearly whispered.

What kind of punishment?”

Maybe you should talk to Caleb about this,” Shoshana said.

April’s eyes widened. “No! I can’t. You can’t tell him I talked to you about this either. He would probably be mad at me. Promise?”

I won’t tell him,” Shoshana promised, “but... ”

What kind of punishment?” April asked again.

Well... he might ground you off of the computer or the phone or take your car keys... ”

Just like a child?”

He might spank you... if you disobey him.”

April’s eyes met hers in stunned silence. She put her head down in her hands. “I don’t know if I can deal with this.”

Shoshana swallowed. She might very well get her own bottom spanked for telling April all of this. “I understand.”

April took a sip of her drink. “Well, you’ve certainly shed light on some things.”

Cam... you know I’d love to do it, but I have Shoshana at home... ”

Cameron clicked his tongue and sighed. “Shoshana would be fine. It’s only a little over a week and I’d watch out for her.”

Caleb shook his head, his face a mask of disappointment. “I don’t know. I think she has a crush on you and... ”

You think she has a crush on me?” Cameron found he liked the idea very much.

Yes, and that’s not a good thing since she lives with us.”

Oh, I see,” Cameron said. “But if she does she hasn’t shown it at all. And it’s only a week.”

Caleb gritted his teeth. “Man... a
ten
thousand dollar bonus? That would add a lot to my nest egg.” He growled and ran his fingers through his hair.

You would be working just about non-stop. It’s a tough project.”

It would be worth it to me.” Caleb grew silent for a moment as he stared out over the city through Cameron’s office window. “Let me talk to Dad and make sure it’s okay with him. You’re sure you don’t mind keeping an eye on Shoshana?”

You have my word I’ll treat her like a sister.”

It was awkward at first having dinner only with Cameron, but Shoshana was glad Caleb had decided to go to Indonesia for the project since it was such a great opportunity for him. She looked at Cameron across the table and her heart picked up a beat. She knew she was in grave danger of falling in love with him but she just couldn’t seem to help herself. She wished she could believe he returned her feelings, but he treated her like a little sister and nothing more. She smiled and got up to begin the dishes. As usual, Cameron helped her clear the table.

Shoshana, April is going to come by and pick you up from work tomorrow afternoon since I have a meeting. I should be out real soon after, though, and I’m going to take off early from work. I thought it might be nice if we went out to dinner tomorrow evening -- my treat. What do you think?”

That sounds nice, Cameron.” Her mind was already flying around trying to figure out what to wear.

How ‘bout I have April drop you off by the gym. I’m going to work out just after I get off work and then we’ll plan on going out from there.”

Okay.”

Shoshana removed her hair from its braid and worked a brush through the long tresses as April drove her to the gym.

I miss Caleb,” April said.

Me too,” Shoshana agreed. She noticed that April had on a longer, more feminine skirt today. She hoped it was a trend.

I’ve been thinking about all that you told me and I’ve been studying the Bible a lot on marriage relationships,” April said.

And... ”

And you’re right. It is Biblical for me to submit to Caleb if I want to marry him. It’s this... punishment thing that bothers me.”

I suppose it would scare me to death if I hadn’t been raised with it,” Shoshana agreed.

It doesn’t scare you anymore?”

Well of course it does if I’m in trouble, but I just try to stay out of trouble. Before the other night I hadn’t been in trouble in three or four years.”

The other night?”

Shoshana blushed. “Yes. Caleb spanked me for what I said to Stacy. Please don’t tell her, though, okay?”

April nodded and fanned herself with her hand. “Oh my goodness.”

By the time they reached the gym Shoshana’s stomach was in knots. She was going out with Cameron. It wasn’t a real date, but it seemed special nonetheless.
