Mrs. Jamison huffed away to speak with April’s father. Caleb sighed and subtly shook his head. It was beyond him how a man like Mr. Jamison, so strong and sure of himself at work, could have a family so out of control.

Their co-workers were beginning to arrive. Cameron and his father had pulled out the huge grill. He saw Mrs. Jamison go back inside the house and figured she went to fetch the food. His stomach growled.

Several of his friends from work came over to shake his hand. All the patio seats were full, so Cameron and Shoshana pulled out several folding lawn chairs from the garage. More bikini-clad girls milled about the pool flanked by teenage boys intent on getting close to them.

April emerged from the pool house. She’d donned a swimsuit cover up and looked much more decent. She pinkened and gave him a shy smile when he caught her eye. She was cute as a button. She stopped a few feet from him. When he would have risen to give her his chair, she removed the towel from her hair and spread it next to him where she sat at his feet. She peered up at him through solemn eyes and rested her head against his knee. Caleb’s fingers twined in her wet hair as he rubbed her head, his heart entranced with her public submission to him. He found himself the recipient of several envious stares from his friends as well as dirty looks from April’s mother and aunt, but April did not budge from her position until her father pronounced the food ready.

Do you want a hamburger or hot dog?” she asked with a flush on her face. As of late, she’d begun to prepare his plate and carry it to him as Shoshana did for Cameron, but he was surprised she was willing to do that here in the presence of her family.

He smiled at her. “Both.”

She returned in a few moments with their plates and went to get their drinks before she sat back down on her towel at his feet. Caleb made small talk with his friends while they ate, noting April was still exceptionally quiet. He supposed that was to be expected. He’d given her a lot to think about.

As soon as he finished April was there to take his Styrofoam plate to the trash. When she came to sit back down, he caught a glimpse of the desperate need reflected in her eyes. Before she had an opportunity to sit he caught her arm and pulled her down into his lap. She curled her legs in close, laying her head on his shoulder, and melted into his arms while the party went on about them.

Shoshana’s stomach soured as she watched Cameron talk and laugh with his friends. Though she sat at his side she had nothing in common with any of them and thus had nothing to add to the conversation. She just didn’t fit into this life.

She drew a sigh of relief when they all decided to go play a game of pool in the pool house. It was so awkward for her to just sit there with nothing to say like a foolish child. She’d rather just sit by herself.

Glancing about, she located April still sitting on Caleb’s lap while he chatted with his co-workers. Her sister-in-law didn’t seem to care what anyone else thought about her. She didn’t even try to add to the conversation. Why was it that April fit in so well without even trying while she didn’t fit in at all despite her efforts? She supposed it had to do with raising. April had been brought up with these kinds of social situations and was completely comfortable in them. She simply belonged without effort. Shoshana, on the other hand, grew up in the hollow around folks much like herself and had no experience with the games these people played.

Time seemed to drag on. She didn’t ever think she’d make it until dark when the fireworks were set to go off. She sighed as she watched the teenagers round about the pool, squealing and splashing about. Had she ever been that carefree in her life? She didn’t think so. She’d always had responsibilities from the time she was a very young child and consequences for failing to meet them. She’d been raised to be very aware of her actions and how they appeared to others, so much so that worried way too much. Cameron had been trying to encourage her to be more spontaneous and less concerned what others thought of her. So far she was failing miserably. She almost groaned when Rona sat down beside her.

Where’s Cam?” her sister-in-law asked.

He went to play pool with his friends.”

Oh.” The girl adjusted the towel she wore wrapped around her body and ran her fingers through her sleek, wet hair. “You don’t like his friends very much, do you?”

Why do you say that?” Shoshana asked.

Because you’re sitting over here instead of hanging out with them. You know, Cameron’s been friends with a lot of those people since he was really young. He’s not going to stop being friends with them just because of you. You might as well get used to it.”

Rona, I don’t want Cameron to stop being friends with them,” Shoshana said on a sigh. “I just don’t know them and would prefer to sit out here. That’s all there is to it.”

I don’t know why you married him. You don’t seem to like anything about his life.”

That’s not true! I... I love Cameron,” she finished with a puzzled frown. What the younger girl said was true. She loved Cameron, but she didn’t care much for his family or his friends. Maybe she should try harder for Cameron’s sake. Setting her jaw, she rose to her feet. “I’m going to go into the pool house with Cameron,” she told Rona, who only shrugged and turned her attention elsewhere.

Shoshana felt terribly awkward walking around the pool area amidst the swimsuit clad young people in her skirt and blouse. She tried to hold her head high and keep an impassive expression, but she felt her face heat and knew from experience her skin looked flushed.

The door to the pool house was open and raucous laughter poured out. Cameron held a pool stick in one hand and a Diet Coke in the other as he watched the game. When the ball on the table bounced around and missed the hole, he held up his pool stick and roared with laughter while one of the bikini-clad girls hugged him from the side. The hand that held the Diet Coke went around her to rest at her naked waist as he smiled down at her with a wink.

Shoshana felt the blood leave her face just as Cameron looked up and saw her standing there. His smile faded at her expression and he removed his hand from the other girl’s waist.

Shana?”

Shoshana turned to go, blindly walking past the pool and toward the house when she heard him behind her.

Shoshana!”

She ignored him and continued to walk when he caught up with her and grasped her arm in a firm hand. “That’s enough,” he hissed into her ear. She looked around her and saw that a few people had started to take notice of their quarrel and felt her face heat even more. He led her through a gate and around to the other side of the house where their voices were drowned out by the air conditioning unit.

She shook his hand off. “Leave me alone, Cameron. Go back to your girlfriend. I’m going home.”

He shook his head and clenched his teeth. “She is an old,
old
friend, Shana. More like a sister. Of course if you cared enough you would know that.”

What do you mean if I cared enough? You were the one who left me. You know I don’t fit in with your friends. You... ”

He put a finger in her face. “You don’t fit in with my friends because you don’t want to. You judged them and dismissed them as unworthy to be your friends the first time you met them.”

She gasped. “That’s not true! I just don’t have anything in common with them.”

They’re just like me, Shana. You’ve just not given them a chance.”

Shoshana’s teeth clenched and she nearly stomped her foot. How dare he blame this on her? “Then maybe I don’t have anything in common with
you
! Maybe we should just get a divorce and be done with it!”

Cameron actually flinched before his jaw hardened. Shoshana regretted her words immediately and her eyes filled with tears. She never wanted a divorce from Cameron. She loved him too much.

I... I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that.”

His nostrils flared. “But you said it.”

I didn’t mean it.”

Shana, go get your purse and meet me in my old room. We’re going to settle this right now.”

Cameron... ” He raised his brows. “Please... I’m sorry. What if someone hears?”

You ought to be worried about your backside rather than what someone else is going to think.” He sighed. “Everybody’s outside and my room is on the far end of the house. Now go.”

Cameron... ” her voice rose to a shrill whine. “Please don’t do this.”

Go!” he barked.

Shoshana obeyed on shaky legs, casting a half-hearted smile at some of the nearby ladies when she retrieved her purse. Her heart clenched in dread, she made her way quietly into the house and up the stairs without drawing notice. Cameron hadn’t spanked her since they’d been married, but she remembered that belt-whipping he’d given her and shuddered. He spanked harder than her father ever did.

She was a mess of nerves by the time he quietly arrived and shut his door. His face no longer looked angry, only regretful as he opened her purse and pulled the paddle from the bottom. She started to shake her head in futile denial of what he was about to do when he sat on the bed beside her.

Come here,” he said, indicating his lap.

A sob escaped while she scooted over to him and gingerly laid herself out across his lap with her head and feet supported by the bed. She felt her skirt brush across her bottom as it was lifted and bunched about her waist and nearly cried out when he laid his hand on her exposed cheeks.

Shoshana, do you understand why I am going to spank you?”

Yes, S... sir” she said, her voice catching. “because I said maybe we should divorce.” She could barely talk for her tears. “I didn’t mean it. I never want a divorce. I’m sorry.”

Shana, you are never going to get away with saying something like that. It chips away at our trust for each other and I won’t allow that.”

I didn’t mean it like that.”

I know. You said it in an attempt to control me. You tried to scare me into accepting your behavior, and it didn’t work.”

Shoshana swallowed. He was right. She had hoped to win the argument by threatening him with a divorce. “I am sorry. I’m really, really sorry. Please forgive me.”

I forgive you, but I’m still going to spank you.” He picked up the paddle from where he’d laid it on the bed. “Keep your hands in front of you. I don’t want to hit them.”

Shoshana grasped handfuls of the bedding and closed her eyes. “Yes, Sir.”

SMACK.

A squeal was jerked from Shoshana’s throat as her bottom was set on fire.

Cameron spanked her furiously, each swat causing the fire in her bottom to burn hotter. Her bottom clenched and writhed about on his lap while her legs kicked and squirmed.

Ooowwww! Oowww, Cameron! Stooopppp! Ooooo!” she cried.

Her left hand flew back before she realized it and Cameron paused to capture it.

No! No more, please! I can’t stand it!”

The paddling went on and on, scalding her bottom and causing involuntary screams to issue from her throat as she thrashed about uncontrollably.

C-a-m-e-r-o-n,” she sobbed in a hoarse voice. “Pleeeaaassee... I’ll never do it again. Sttooopppp.”

Her husband continued to spank her throbbing bottom until she thought she’d pass out. All she could do was lay lifeless across his lap and sob until he finally ended the spanking. She collapsed with relief and sighed when he gently rubbed her scalded cheeks before pulling her into his arms.

I’m sorry,” she cried, “I’ll do better. I’ll try to get to know your friends.”

Shoshana, that’s not the reason I spanked you... ”

I know, but I was wrong to not like them. You’ve been so good to my friends... ”

He kissed her on the head. “I would like for you to get to know them better, but I’m not going to make you.”

I’ll do my best, I promise.”

Shoshana looked up at him, her expression so earnest he couldn’t resist a kiss to her reddened lips. She was not one of those women who cried prettily. Her face and neck were broken out in pink splotches. Her eyes were red and swollen and the whole tip of her nose and underneath was bright pink. The freckles on her nose seemed to twitch and her lips quivered with her sniffles. She looked pitiful. He kissed her again and this time lost himself. He hadn’t meant to make love to her, not here in his parents’ home in the middle of a company picnic, but he couldn’t help himself. Cupping her still warm bottom, he carefully entered her and rode her slowly.
