Jason and Lizzie had discussed that before they married. Lizzie even professed to believe it, yet it didn’t quite find its way into her daily walk.

How do you be the head of someone who won’t let you lead them?”

How does a government lead its people? How do masters lead their slaves? The same Greek word that is used in the Bible to describe those relationships is used to describe a man’s authority over his wife...
hupotasso
. Every other place the word is used, the one given authority has the means to discipline the one under authority. Why would it be any different in a marriage relationship? Don’t blame it on your wife if you’re not leading in your home.”

Jason’s heart picked up in rhythm. “So you’re saying it’s my fault that Lizzie is running amok?” He reddened. He hadn’t meant to admit that to Mr. Ted.

Ted smiled. “I have noticed your young lady is out gadding abroad a whole lot.”

Gadding abroad?”

Ted laughed. “Ah, yes. Old Matthew Henry’s words for a woman who will not stay home. He felt that once a month was sufficient for a woman to leave her home, and then only with the permission of her husband. How times have changed!”

Jason smiled. Lizzie would be stark raving mad if she had to stay home a week, let alone a month.

I wish Lizzie wouldn’t spend so much money. That’s my main problem with her. She messes our finances up about every month,” Jason admitted.

Why do you let her?” Ted asked.

Jason sputtered. “How can I stop her?”

Lizzie doesn’t work, does she?”

No, but... ”

Give her a portion of the budget and put it in an account of her own. Don’t let her have access to the rest of the money.”

But what if there’s an emergency or she needs something.”

Do you
really
want to know how I’d handle it?”

Yes,” Jason said tentatively.

I’d give her an allowance and tell her that’s what she has to spend. I’d leave her name on the bigger account in case of emergency, but if she touched it without my permission or a really big emergency, I’d whip her hind end raw.”

Jason felt his face flush, shaking his head to clear the image that statement evoked. “You’ve certainly given me something to pray about.”

Jason waited up late for his wife in the living room, his mouth set in a firm line. He was at the end of his rope. She didn’t make it in until nearly 10:30 pm, and she looked tired.

Hi Sweetie,” she said, “Sorry I’m so late. The women’s meeting seemed to go on and on. It was fun, but... what’s wrong?”

Sit down, Lizzie.”

Lizzie’s face furrowed in puzzlement, but she sat on the edge of the sofa nearest his recliner. “Is something wrong?”

Yes,” he said with a sigh. He picked up their checkbook from the end table. “Can you tell me what this is all about?”

Lizzie flushed when she saw the entry he meant. Her eyes slid from his.

There wasn’t any money in the church budget for costumes for the Easter play, so I put some in on it... ”

Two hundred and thirteen dollars?
Lizzie, this is ridiculous. Why couldn’t you just use the costumes from the year before?”

They were getting so old, and we had a lady in the church who offered to sew the new ones for free. All we had to do was buy the fabric. You even said yourself how good they looked.”

That was before I knew
I
paid for them!” Jason fairly yelled.

Lizzie’s eyes filled with tears. “Jason, you don’t have to be so hateful about it.”

Jason’s nostrils flared and he shook his head. “I can’t believe this. You go out and spend over two hundred dollars without even consulting me and then you say I shouldn’t be hateful about it?”

Lizzie rose to her feet, her cheeks flushed and her eyes bright. “I am not going to talk to you about this anymore.”

Jason grabbed her arm and pulled her back down. “Yes, Ma’am you are, if you know what’s good for you.”

She stared at him in disbelief as tears started to trickle down her cheeks. Her bottom lip stuck out a mile as she crossed her arms over her chest.

Jason picked up the other checkbook from the table, the one with the temporary checks in it. “This is your checking account,” he told her.

Her eyes snapped to his. “What?”

I opened a new checking account for you. I have put $1,000 in it for the month. All of our regular household expenses are to come out of that amount, including groceries and any clothing you purchase, plus your gas and running around money. Bills and big expenses will come out of the main account... ”

What do you mean the main account?”

I mean you no longer have my permission to use any account except the one I opened for you. Your name is still on all our accounts in case of emergency, but I mean real emergencies, Lizzie, not just a good deal on a pair of shoes.”

I can’t believe you’re saying this!” Lizzie cried. “You don’t trust me?”

It’s not that I don’t trust you, Liz. You just have a tendency to overspend and put us in a bind every month. I make a decent salary, yet we can’t get ahead because of your spending.”

Lizzie’s face grew stony and she refused to meet his eyes. “Fine, then. But see how you like it when there’s nothing in the house to eat.”

If I have to eat out for dinner, Liz, I’m going to take it out of your account. You should know that up front.”

That’s not fair! This whole thing is not fair,” she protested.

It’s the way things are going to be,” he said. “Which brings me to my next subject... ”

What?” she snapped.

You are running around too much in the evenings. I am going to ask you to cut it down to no more than one evening a week that you’re gone from home, not including Sundays and Wednesday nights, of course. I want you to start keeping the house cleaner and seeing to our needs rather than those of everyone else.”

But the church... ”

God doesn’t require you to do so much you neglect your home, Babe. He called you to be a keeper at home, not a keeper at church.”

Lizzie’s mouth opened and closed several times. Finally she bowed her head. “You’re right, Jay... it’s just that I have so many commitments... ”

Get out of them. You are committed to this marriage first and foremost.”

Could you give me some time to free myself up though?” she asked.

He sighed. They’d had this conversation before and she always promised to do better. It just never happened. “How long?”

Two months?”

Huh uh. You have a week,” he told her.

Jason, that’s unreasonable!”

Not unreasonable as I’m going to be if you don’t do as I say. I’ve had it, Liz.”

What are you saying? Are you threatening to divorce me?” Her voice had grown shrill. He knew the prospect frightened her as much as it angered her.

No, never. But I will lead this household even if I have to take a switch to your behind to get you in line.” She snorted. “I’m serious, Sweetheart. Let me catch you using any account but yours or staying out more than one night a week and I guarantee you a sore backside.”

You can’t be serious!”

Try me,” he told her. “And if this house doesn’t get cleaned up right real quick, I’ll whip you for that too.”

She jumped to her feet, two angry spots high on her cheekbones. “So what am I? A slave?”

No. You’re my wife and you’d best start acting like it.”

You can’t tell me what to do!”

The Bible says I can. Now sit your butt back down before I put you

over my knee right now.”

She sputtered. “You wouldn’t dare.”

Jason’s heart picked up in rhythm at her flagrant disrespect in the face of his threat. She didn’t believe him. He hadn’t meant to begin this tonight, but he’d backed himself into a corner and now could see no other choice. Slowly he rose to his feet. Her eyes widened, but then her jaw clenched and she looked up at him in blatant challenge.

She fought like a wildcat when he grasped her arm and started to pull her down with him onto the couch, but she was a small woman and easy to subdue. Crushing any guilt or doubts that threatened, he steeled his heart to teach her a lesson. This could end or save his marriage, but at least after tonight he’d know.

Lizzie screeched insults while he pulled her across his lap, her head near the back end of the couch with her legs hanging off the edge of his own so that she was at a good spanking angle. He’d thought about this position beforehand and it looked like a good one from where he sat. Thankfully she wore elastic waist Capri pants, so it was an easy thing to push them down, along with her panties, around her ankles. Methodically he wedged her calves under his leg and wrapped his arm around her waist.

Jason! Don’t you dare! I’ll leave! I swear it!” she screeched, slightly out of breath from the struggle.

Jason didn’t bother to answer. He’d researched wife spanking on the internet and knew anything she said now should not be paid any mind.

The moment of truth arrived. He looked at her slightly plump white bottom and clenched his jaw, dreading to cause her pain. He forced himself to think on her disrespect in order to prepare his heart as he drew his hand above his head.

His hand was large, and since he worked in construction, very calloused and rough. He brought it down on her wriggling bottom with a loud smack. She squealed in anger. He gave her another hard smack. This time her squeal held more pain than anger. He punished her with fast, hard swats, one right after another. He knew the minute her focus turned from her anger to the pain for she started to cry and beg for mercy and forgiveness. He continued the spanking, watching as her bottom turned bright pink and then crimson. Gradually, Lizzie’s screams became hoarse pleas mixed with terrible sobs, and her struggles became weak before they stopped altogether. He paused, hand in the air.

She looked over her shoulder, and seeing his hand poised to deliver another swat, began to cringe. “Please,” she sobbed, “Jason... no more.”

Have you learned your lesson, Liz?” he asked.

Yes,” she hiccoughed.

He brought his hand down and she yelped. “When you are being punished you will address me as ‘Sir’. Do you understand?”

Yes, Sir,” she cried.

I want you to remember this, Lizzie, because this is what you are going to receive every single time you’re disrespectful to me.” He swatted her again and she cried out. “Every time you neglect the house,” another hard swat, “every time you waste our money,” another hard swat, “and every time you’re out in the evening without permission.” One last hard swat caused her to cry high in her throat. “Do you understand?” he asked.

Yes... sir,” she sobbed.

He sat her on her feet. She would not meet his eyes, but turned to go their bedroom. “Lizzie?”

She paused but did not turn around. “Yes, sir?”

Go and get your nightgown on and come back here so we can talk.”

Okay, sir,” she whispered.

In a few moments she returned, tears still rolling down her face. He made her sit on her knees at his feet while they discussed which activities she would give up and when.

Lizzie,” he said.

Yes, Sir?”

Look at me.”

Shyly she raised her lovely brown eyes to his. They were red and puffy, but they held a new respect he hadn’t seen before.

I love you,” he told her.

A new flood of tears filled her eyes and she threw herself into his arms. “I love you, too.”

Hi Honey!” Lizzie called from the kitchen when Jason arrived home from work, stomach grumbling. He walked on through the living room and into the kitchen and grinned at Lizzie’s pink face and mussed hair.
