Read The Energy of Words: Use the Vibration of Language to Manifest the Life You Desire Online
Authors: Michelle Arbeau
When we hear an upbeat song on the radio, it can change
our mood and set the tone of our day. The words we think,
speak, and write are all parts of our personal theme song. Is your song a down-on-your-luck country tune, a bubbly pop
track, or somewhere between?
A word’s dictionary meaning is only half of its definition.
The other half lies within the vibrational meaning of a word,
which can be measured using numbers. When music is sung
from a sheet of musical notes, the music is deciphered from
the codes on the sheet. Numbers are another kind of code
that can be used to decipher the energetic meaning of a
word.
By applying the universal language of numbers, we can
convert any word to its energetic form. Everything in the
world can be measured, sorted, or counted using numbers.
Like words, numbers also have their own unique energetic sig-
nature. All numbers in existence are created using the base
numbers 1–9 (and 0, which is a symbol rather than a number).
46 Determining the Vibration of a Word through the Language of Numbers
As previously stated, Pythagoras discovered through his
study of numbers that all things are based in numbers. He
said, “Everything lies veiled in numbers.” In his Mystery
School, he taught this concept, but his findings were so as-
tonishing that he swore his students to secrecy. The Pythago-
rean Society took an active part in politics, which
unfortunately led to the demise of the Mystery School and
its following as the government did not approve of such a se-
cret order11. The school and meeting places were burned
along with much of the knowledge and information con-
tained within them. However, thanks to the revelations of
this Greek genius, we now possess the tools necessary to
allow us to harness the vibration of language.
Based on Pythagoras’s findings, every number in exis-
tence is created from the base numbers 1–9, which are the
numerical figures that form the basis of numerology. Draw-
ing upon the theory that all things are energy at their core,
numbers are also energy and can represent the energy pat-
terns within and around us. Think of numbers as spiritual
DNA. Anything in the world can be reduced to a base num-
ber or energetic frequency of 1–9 and this number code can
tell you the spiritual or energetic essence of a person, place, or thing based on the number’s definition.
We’re about to dive headlong into the process of uncov-
ering the energetic meaning of all the words you use in your
daily life, but before we do that, let’s look at a snapshot of some of the more popular positive and negative words and
Determining the Vibration of a Word through the Language of Numbers 47
what they mean. Rewriting your vocabulary list is easy when
you know what you’re actually saying.
The word “hate,” for example, is a harsh word by the dic-
tionary definition and the vibrational meaning is “distrust.”
If the word “hate” is thought, spoken, or written, it packs a powerful punch in a very negative way.
The word “believe” is an inspirational word that energeti-
cally means “freedom of expression.”
The word “can’t” is a submissive word with a vibrational
meaning of “codependent.”
The word “problem” is a skeptical word that subliminally
says “pessimistic” and “judgmental.” A common phrase
we’re all guilty of using at some point: “But the problem
is …” Using “problem” in this way creates a problem before
there is one; it creates pessimistic and judgmental energy the moment the word is uttered.
Converting Words to Numbers
The process of assigning numerical values to letters or words
is not based in numerology alone. Many cultures and tradi-
tions have used similar methods to convert words to numeri-
cal meanings and values for centuries. T
he Jewish tr
adition has a system of assigning esoteric meaning to words based
on their numerical values; this is called
gematria
.
Converting letters to numerical form, as seen in current numerology systems, is also based on this Jewish practice of gematria:

Determining the Vibration of a Word through the Language of Numbers 49
Gematria is a system of calculating numerical value
to a word or phrase in the belief that words or phrases
with identical numerical values bear some relation to
each other, or bear some relation to the number. Hid-
den meanings and words can be found by using values
of the underlying letters (see chart). A good Gematria
example is the Hebrew word Chai (“life”), which is
composed of two letters which add up to 18. This has
made 18 a “lucky number” among Jews, and gifts in
multiples of $18 are very common.12
The diagram on the previous page is a gematria word con-
version chart. Like Pythagorean numerology, its foundation
is constructed of nine base numbers used in converting let-
ters and words to numbers.
Although Pythagoras was considered the father of numer-
ology, his work related more to numbers as symbols. His theo-
ries were based on his insights that everything progressed in
predictable cycles, and he assumed a similar connection to the alphabet. His work provided the basis of what is now called
numerology.
Modern numerology has various antecedents. Ruth A.
Drayer’s book,
Numerology: The Power in Numbers
(Square One, 2002) says that around the turn of the century (from
1800 to 1900 CE), Mrs. L. Dow Balliett combined Pythago-
ras’s work with biblical reference. In the mid-1970s, Balliett’s student, Dr. Juno Jordan, changed numerology further and
helped it to become the system known today under the title
50 Determining the Vibration of a Word through the Language of Numbers
“Pythagorean.” Jordan combined Pythagoras’s initial work of
the vibration of numbers with Balliett’s work with biblical
references to form what is now known as the Pythagorean
Numerology System.14
The diagram below is the Pythagorean word-conversion
chart based on the Latin alphabet (more will be discussed in
Chapter 10 on how to convert words in other languages).
Each letter in the alphabet is assigned a number from 1–9,
starting with the first letter and labeling sequentially until 9 is reached. Once you move through all 9 numbers, you return
to 1 again and continue matching letters to numbers, like
this: A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, D = 4, E = 5, F = 6, G = 7, H = 8, I
= 9, J = 1, and so on, until you reach the end of the alphabet.
This is the standard chart used in numerology today. (Be sure
to mark this page for easy reference when you begin your
journey into your own word conversions!)

Now that you have an understanding of the history and
meaning of numerology and its relation to numbers and let-
ters, let’s go further into the world of energy as it relates to number vibrations and the true meaning of a word.
Whether you’re converting verbs, nouns, adjectives, or
names, you’ll find as I have that the accuracy of this chart is
Determining the Vibration of a Word through the Language of Numbers 51
impeccable. In my practice over the years, I have used it for
many things, including helping clients pick a suitable busi-
ness name or stage name to ensure success; assisting with a
move by determining the vibration of a city, country, or
street name and how it relates to the individual’s energetic
makeup; and even helping to name children.
One of my most memorable experiences as a numerolo-
gist was to assist a mother in the naming process of her six-
week-old son. This mother was having a difficult time
deciding on a name for her boy, and she felt guilty that he
had yet to be named at a month and a half old. After convert-
ing all of her name choices to their numerical meaning, I
gave my opinion of which name would be optimal for her
son based on the name vibrations and comparing them with
the energies he carried in his date of birth. She confirmed
with me afterward that I had suggested the very name she
felt was the right one all along. This experience was one of
many that have reaffirmed for me the power behind the
numbers and their relation to all things, including words.
Let’s put the chart into action by decoding the word
“live.” What does it mean to really live? After converting the letters to numerical values, it looks like this: L = 3, I = 9, V =
4, E = 5.
The next step is to add the numbers to get the main ener-
getic pattern of the word. Imagine each number value as a
neutron or electron and the sum as the entire atom. The sum
of a word’s numerical value shows you precisely what you’re
creating with that word’s vibration. Here are the numerical
52 Determining the Vibration of a Word through the Language of Numbers
values of the letters in the word “live” written as an addition equation:
3 + 9 + 4 + 5 = 21
If you arrive at a double-digit answer, reduce again to get
the overall energetic pattern as a single digit. Remember, all numbers are created using the base numbers 1–9 (and 0),
therefore we must reduce to a single-digit number to find the
base value. The sum we arrived at above is 21 and it is re-
duced like this:
2 + 1 = 3
The base pattern of the word “live” is 3.
At the end of this chapter, you’ll find the base number
meanings of 1–9. You’ll see that there are both positive and
negative traits of each number. How you use a word will de-
cide which traits you’ll need to focus on changing. For exam-
ple, if you use the word “live” in the phrase “I don’t want to live like this anymore,” the vibration of that word is being
used negatively and the negative qualities of the 3 apply. The negative qualities of 3, such as critical and self-doubting, are dominating the word’s vibration. Alternatively, using “live” in a positive phrase like “I want to live like there’s no tomor-row” draws on the positive qualities of the 3, such as inspiration and imagination.
The word “problem” is another example of a word that is
frequently used negatively and is often responsible for being
a hindrance in otherwise happy lives. If you convert “prob-
lem” to numerical values, it looks like this: P = 7, R = 9, O =
6, B = 2, L = 3, E = 5, M = 4.
Determining the Vibration of a Word through the Language of Numbers 53
The sum of those digits is 7 + 9 + 6 + 2 + 3 + 5 + 4 = 36.
In reducing 36, we come to a single digit of 9: 3 + 6 = 9. The word “problem” vibrates to the number 9 energy.
