Chapter Seven

 

 

Cameron

 

Things between Jake and me were getting better, especially after our dinner date with Kris and Nikky, but I was determined to do everything I could to fix our relationship.

I stopped having beers with the crew, coming home immediately after every shift. I cleaned the apartment and made Jake his favorite meals. I wasn’t much of a cook, but we had our staples. I did the laundry and the grocery shopping. Doing the chores wasn’t fixing the problem, but I needed to show him my commitment somehow and being busy helped with my wayward brain.

My nightmares happened when I couldn’t keep my mind off the accident, so if I could avoid the slow times, then I avoided the nightmares. Some dreams I could hide from Jake, but others were too intense and I woke up screaming. The bad ones freaked Jake out, and we’d both end up awake, hearts pounding, as we stared at the ceiling, neither of us sleeping again.

We needed time together, away from outside pressures, and I wanted to suggest a weekend in Napa. We’d always enjoyed time with Jake’s Aunt Cece and her wife, Brenda, and the chance to relax and reconnect would be a good place to start.

Jake came home after work, and after putting his bag down, he came into the kitchen and kissed my cheek. “Smells good,” he said, rummaging in the fridge as I tossed the vegetables in the wok.

“Your day okay?” I asked.

Closing the fridge, he leaned against it and watched me cook. “Got another large client today so that’ll keep me busy for a while.”

“That’s a good thing, right?”

“Yes.”

A lot of the big clients went to Jake, and although we didn’t share much about our jobs, I knew he enjoyed the larger clients.

“So, you know I’ve got this weekend off?” I asked.

“Yeah?”

“Well, I thought about spending the weekend at Napa. I called Aunt Cece and Brenda, and they’re preparing the guest cottage for us. It would be good to get away and relax for a bit, you know, help clear our heads.” Given the strain between us lately, I didn’t think he’d want to share our problems with his aunts, so I was a little worried what his answer would be. But as I stood there, stirring the vegetables, his lips quirked until they became a wide grin. I breathed a sigh of relief.

“You know what? That’s the best idea you’ve had in a long time. We haven’t seen Aunt Cece or Brenda in a while, and I could do with getting out of the city for a bit.” Jake’s eyes narrowed in thought. “You’re off Friday, right?” I nodded. “Why don’t we go up on Friday morning and spend a long weekend instead. I’ll ask Jenny if I can take Friday off and we can have three days instead of two.”

 

 

Jake and I left home after breakfast on Friday morning, and the hour and a half drive was comfortable and easy. Although we had argued briefly that morning about who was going to drive—there was no way I was going to let him—we talked like we used to, about everything and nothing, and the tension that had hung around us disappeared with each mile.

The weather was warm with clear blue skies, and the farther we traveled, the more fragrant the air became, smelling of freshly cut grass and blossoming grapevines. My skin tingled and I smiled when Jake turned to me with a huge grin on his face and placed his hand on my thigh, making my blood hum. He seemed to feel it too, a turning point for us. At that moment, we both knew we were going to be okay, and whatever problems we had, they were fixable. Jake’s hand stayed on my thigh for the remainder of the drive, his thumb moving in tender circles against the denim of my jeans.

Pulling into the driveway of the winery, I saw Aunt Cece and Brenda as they stood on the porch waiting for us. We grabbed our bags from the back and made our way up the front steps, and soon enough we were enveloped in warm hugs.

“Ah, my boys are here,” said Aunt Cece, stepping back to look at us. “I’ve missed you both. You don’t visit often enough.”

“If we lived here, you’d still complain you didn’t see us enough,” Jake said, rolling his eyes.

“She probably would too,” Brenda said with a chuckle.

“C’mon inside. I’ve got fresh cinnamon rolls and coffee. We have a lot to catch up on and only three days to do it.” After Aunt Cece ordered us inside, we sat around the small breakfast table as we talked and ate.

This was like a homecoming for Jake, and conversation was easy. He’d always called the Napa vineyard his second home, and I knew why. Aunt Cece and Brenda were happy, easygoing people, never in a rush and always willing to help. Their vineyard was small with few staff, enough to keep the business profitable but not making a fortune. They only sold their wine in stores, never from the cellar door, as this was their home and hosting tours was costly and time-consuming.

Talk revolved around Jake’s work, his promotion, and how he was enjoying the new role. Then Brenda turned her attention to me. “Cam, how’s your work going? Jake said you were called to that large freeway accident last month. That must’ve been scary, all those poor people trapped.” Brenda meant well, but the mention of the accident had that lump forming in my chest again.

Jake stiffened beside me but didn’t look for my reaction, his smile tight as he poured more coffee from the pot.

 

Chapter Eight

The relaxed mood I’d enjoyed on the drive here vanished. Cam’s head dropped; he’d felt it too. I looked at Aunt Cece to see if she noticed, and she raised an eyebrow. The unspoken question acknowledged, I shook my head, begging her not to ask.

“What’d I miss?” Brenda never could keep quiet. I loved her desperately, but she had the subtlety of a sledgehammer.

“Hon, why don’t you go make sure we’ve got some wine chilled for lunch.” Cece gave Brenda the

Brenda darted a glance between all three of us before she wandered off to the kitchen to check the wine. Cam looked at the table, scratching a fingernail over the knotted wood, his shoulders tense.

“I’m sorry,” Cam whispered, dropping his head again. His voice was barely audible so I didn’t know how Aunt Cece heard him across the table.

Reaching out, she patted Cam’s hand. “That’s okay, my sweet. I’ve known something’s been going on for a while. I can hear it in Jake’s voice over the phone. You’ll tell me when you’re good and ready. In the meantime, get yourselves settled in the cottage. Lunch is in a couple of hours.” My aunt stood and moved toward the kitchen, probably to berate Brenda a little.

I nudged Cam’s shoulder. “Come on.”

After grabbing our bags, we walked the few yards out the back to the guest cottage, and once inside, I dropped my bag and gathered Cam into my arms. I breathed in his familiar scent and kissed the juncture of his neck and shoulder. He was trying. Our apartment had never been cleaner. He came home after every shift, and although I never expected him to stop socializing with his friends, I wasn’t about to complain when I got to spend extra time with him.

Cam suggested coming to Napa so we could reconnect. I’d always felt at home here, and we needed a chance to relax and regroup. Things at home were better, but there was a lingering tension that wouldn’t go away. Hopefully, after this weekend, our life could go back to normal, like it felt on the drive here.

“I’m sorry,” Cam repeated, hugging me tight.

“Don’t be. We came here for a chance to relax and find
us
again. This was the best idea ever, and I know we can get through this. I need you, Romeo, always, and when we leave here on Sunday afternoon, our life will be back to normal again. You felt it on the drive here, I know you did. We’ll get it back, I promise.” My voice held more conviction than I felt. I hoped the positive affirmation would hold.

 

 

Lunch was a riot as we sat with my aunts on the deck, conversation flowing easily, and the tension dissipated.

Brenda was a never-ending source of laughter, she always had a

I was convinced Brenda was crazy. Aunt Cece couldn’t contain herself any longer and burst into laughter. “I’m still not sure whether they got the reference to the fish or they were shocked that you said anything to them.”

Tears of laughter ran down our faces, the wine doing its part as the bottle was passed around the table. My head spun a little from the copious amounts of alcohol, and Cam gripped my arm as he tried to contain his laughter. This was how our relationship used to be, and my heart warmed to know we hadn’t lost it completely.
