Then
suddenly the noise stopped. The ground stopped trembling. Everything was silent
and still.

Chapter 2

Containment

Lily’s
Story

“Everybody
wait here,” Danny said. He left the safety of the stone room, and we watched in
silence as he made his way down the corridor back into the house.

“Will
he be okay?” I asked Hecate.

“He
should be; if anything goes wrong he’ll teleport himself back here or somewhere
safe.”

“I
hope Keira is okay,” Marley said, getting emotional. “I had a vision of a woman
with blue eyes…I should have sensed it was her. We could have stopped this.”

“This
would have happened anyway,” Hecate said. “You mustn’t blame yourself. None of
us could have stopped this. There is only one person—one being—powerful enough
to give someone,
a demon
, the power of an archangel.”

“Who?”

“God.”

“What?”
we all said, in shock.

“He’s
real?” Tyler exclaimed, wide eyed.

“Of
course he is; Lucifer is real, and one can’t exist without the other, can they?
If Lucifer exists, God exists.”

“But
then why—?” Jake started to say.

“We
can go up,” Danny interrupted as he walked back in to us. “Be warned…she looks
different.”

“Where
is she?” I asked.

“In
her bedroom…she seems to be asleep. Eligos laid her on the bed. You must be
very quiet. He doesn’t want her waking up. She can’t control it and could kill
us all.”

We
all nodded and slowly, and as quietly as possible, made our way to Keira’s
room. We decided not to all go in at once. I had known her longer than any of
the others, so I went in first, accompanied by Danny and Lucian. When I walked
into the room she lay on her back on the bed, arms by her sides. Eligos sat on
the bed beside her. When he heard us walk in he turned to look at us; by the
look on his face we knew he was upset. He didn’t speak. He just closed his eyes
for a moment and then turned away from us.

As
I walked closer to them, I saw that Danny was right…she looked very different.
Her skin still showed the white vine-like markings, all of which were glowing.
In a way she looked frightening, so different from how I was used to seeing her,
and yet in another way, she looked beautiful, divine and powerful…like a goddess.

Lucian
walked up and stood beside me, just staring at her.

“What
happened out there? How did you stop her?” I whispered to Eligos.

He
didn’t answer me; instead, he turned and pointed to the bedroom door. Lucian
and I followed him out of the room. Danny stayed behind to make sure the others
were okay when it was their turn to see her.

Eligos
led us into the bedroom that he had stayed in before he and Keira got together.
He shut the door behind us, then sat on the little sofa by the window next to
the bed.

“What
happened?” I asked.

“I’m
telling this story once, so if the others ask
you
can tell them,” Eligos
began. “When I reached Keira I told her if she couldn’t fight it or make it go
away, then to try and relax. I told her she had nothing to be afraid of. She
said she was scared that she didn’t know what was happening to her; that she
couldn’t control it, she didn’t know how. She was in tears and begged me not to
leave her.

“The
tornados were moving closer and closer, and the wind was unbelievably strong. I
tried to teleport us away, but I couldn’t take her…something was stopping me.
Then she collapsed. I lowered her to the ground, still with my arms around her,
and grounded us both. The tornados were almost on top of us, and then they just
vanished. When I looked up, I just saw bits of grass and dirt, sticks and
leaves falling to the ground. The sky was blue again. When I looked at Keira,
she looked the way she does now.”

“I
feel awful for hiding, for leaving her,” I said, almost in tears.

“Don’t,”
Eligos told me. “She wouldn’t have wanted you to get hurt. You did the right
thing.”

“So
what happens now? What do we do?” Lucian asked him.

“I’m
going to ask Hecate to put a spell on the room. We need to try and contain her
until we either figure out how to get it out of her, or until she can control
it.”

“
Can
you
contain her?” I asked, unsure as to whether it would even be possible.

“She’s
still a demon too, so a demon’s trap should contain her, but like I said I need
to speak to Hecate. She knows more about spells than almost anyone else I know,”
he said, standing. “I’m going back to Keira.”

When
he walked out, everyone except Danny and Hecate, came in. We told them everything
we knew; none of them spoke after that. In the end, I just walked out and made
my way back to her bedroom.

Eligos
sat beside her again, his hand on one of hers as she slept. Danny and Hecate
stood at her feet, and when I looked down I saw the demon’s trap around her
bed. One of them had created it but had left a little gap at the edge. That way
the spell wouldn’t work yet, and they wouldn’t be trapped if they went near
her. Hecate came over to me and told me that when we left the circle, the
drawing would be completed, and the spell would be activated.

Lucian,
Jake, and Tyler went downstairs to try to fix the house and any damage done
outside. They didn’t want her waking up and seeing everything—it would only
upset her, and that might trigger another attack. I stayed in the room just
over an hour, sitting in silence. Eligos never left her side, and Danny and
Hecate stayed at the foot of her bed. They had to be close in case she woke—they
were a lot stronger than us, and although they were all unnerved and worried
about what she now was, they knew they would have to stand up to her if
necessary.

I
went downstairs to make everyone coffee. The guys had managed to fix the inside
of the house up nicely and were now working hard outside. The only thing they
wouldn’t be able to fix were the cracks in the ground…they weren’t powerful
enough. We would have to either wait for Keira or ask Eligos, Danny, or Hecate
to put things back to normal.

“We
can’t fix the cars,” Jake said, walking into the room. “There are far too many parts
missing.”

“She’s
gonna be really upset.”

“We
don’t care about the cars, we can get others. Is she okay?” he asked.

“We
don’t know yet, she’s still asleep.”

“This
is crazy; like we don’t have enough going on in our lives.”

“She
didn’t ask for this!” I said, a little brusquely.

“No,
I’m not saying that. I mean
she too
has enough on her plate. Why can’t
someone, somewhere, just cut her
and
us some slack?” He sounded really
fed up. “It’s not fair. Sometimes I wish I was just a normal everyday person…no
powers, no knowledge of anything.”

“That’s
all very well said, but what would you do if your town was attacked?” Hecate
quizzed as she walked in. “How would you defend yourself, the people you love,
your friends?”

Jake
didn’t reply. He just sighed and nodded his head slightly.

“Any
change?” I asked her.

“The
markings have gone; she looks normal again now.”

“That’s
a good thing, right?”

“I
honestly don’t know.”

I’d
just picked the kettle up to pour the water into the cups when we heard a loud
bang. It frightened the life out of me and I ended up pouring half of the
boiling water all over the side.

“Don’t
panic, don’t panic,” Tyler said, running inside. “We made the noise, everything
is okay. We piled up all the metal from the cars, hoping that when Keira is okay
she’ll be able to throw them in the cracks and bury them. Anyway, Lucian lost
concentration and dropped part of the car; that’s what the noise was.”

“Tell
him he’s an idiot and frightened me to death,” I said, relieved.

He
went back outside smirking slightly. It was nice to know my distress amused
him. I re-boiled the kettle and Jake took the drinks out for him and the guys
while I made my way back upstairs with Hecate.

When
I walked into the room Eligos still sat beside her. He turned to smile at me
when I passed him the drink, and mouthed “thank you” to me. I nodded and smiled
before turning my attention to Keira. Hecate was right; Keira looked normal.
Eligos moved off the bed and led me to the other side of the room.

“They
just vanished,” he told me. “One minute she was glowing, the next—gone.”

“When
do you think she will wake up?”

“I
wish I knew.”

“Are
you
okay?”

“I’ll
be better when she opens her eyes and smiles at me,” he said, looking over at
her.

“Eligos,”
Hecate whispered as she walked over. “Lilith is going berserk…she said you’re
ignoring her. She saw everything that happened through the viewing pool.
Lucifer can hardly control her—she’s trying to come here.”

“Keira
is my priority, and I’m not leaving her. You go—tell her what’s happening.” A
moment later she was gone.

I
turned to face Keira, and at the same time she sat up straight, eyes wide and
staring straight in front of her. Danny, who was standing at the end of the bed,
quickly moved away from her. He held his hand down towards the floor, and the
drawing of the demon’s trap completed itself. He looked up at her, but luckily
she hadn’t noticed what he’d done.

“Keira,”
Eligos said softly.

She
didn’t even look at him. She turned around and got up from the bed. That was
when she noticed the trap.

“Now
Keira listen, it’s not—” Danny went to say.

“What
are you doing?” she asked as she looked around the bed.

“It’s
just so—”

“You’re
going to try and kill me, aren’t you?” she said, looking at Eligos.

“Never!”
he quickly replied, walking closer to her.

“Then
let me loose.”

“Keira
sweetheart, we can’t, not while—”

“I
said let me loose!” As she spoke, the room began shaking.

“Calm
down, it’s only until—” he tried to tell her.

She
wouldn’t listen; the room shook harder and harder.

“She
shouldn’t be able to do that, should she?” I asked Eligos.

“It’s
not going to work; both of you get out—now!”

I
ran towards the door, but Danny didn’t move…he wouldn’t leave. Eligos shouted
to me again, and I ran down the stairs and outside to the guys.

“She’s
awake!” I shouted to them. “She’s seen the trap, and she’s pissed!”

“Oh
shit!” I heard Lucian and Tyler say.

I
noticed three other people standing with them, two guys and a girl.

“Who
are you?” I asked.

“Lily,
this is Marshal, Jared, and Olivia. They were told to find Keira,” Jake said.

“Look,
I’m not being rude but now is not a good time,” I told the three of them. I
turned around quickly when I heard the sound of a window smashing, and looked
up just in time to see Danny and Hecate come flying through Keira’s bedroom
window. I watched in shock and horror as they both hit the ground. They
gathered themselves quickly, exhibiting the demon qualities of incredible strength
and a high pain threshold.

“Stand
back,” Danny warned as he grabbed Hecate’s arm and ran towards us.

“When
did you get back?” I asked Hecate.

“I
saw her awaken from the viewing pool in the palace. I came straight back.”

“Where’s
Eligos?”

“He’s
still up there, trying to calm her down. She’s broken the trap and tried to
attack him, but he’s managed to evade her up to now,” Danny explained.

“Why
is she attacking him?” Jake asked.

“I
don’t think she means to,” Hecate told him. “I think the power is taking over.
She was upset about the trap…she thought we were trying to kill her.”

“Why
would she think that?”

“She’s
frightened, Jake. Can you imagine being in her position right now, not knowing
what’s happening to you, waking up and finding your friends have trapped you? Who
are you?” she asked when she saw the three new faces.

“They’re
with us now,” Tyler told her. “We’ll explain later.”

“You
might want to leave,” she advised them.

“We’re
not leaving,” Jared told her bluntly. “We may be able to help you,” he said as
his eyes turned black for a second.

“I
doubt it,” Hecate said, allowing her eyes to glow red for a moment. “If
we
can’t handle her, what chance have
you
got?”

The
three of them backed off a little, realizing Hecate was a demon and uncertain
of what to do next.

“Don’t
worry,” Jake told them. “They’re with us.”
