“I can’t lie, you’ve shocked me with this one,” she said. She couldn’t remember when was the last time he’d just handed her anything without it being some type of conflict; especially money.

“Well, I’ma get on outta here so I can go feed your children,” he teased causing her to grin then he leaned in for a hug. Surprisingly, she hugged him back. He closed his eyes and deeply inhaled the sweet scent of her Stella Parfum. “Damn, you still got it.”

“Thanks,” she said not wanting him to hold her to long because she hadn’t had the touch of a man in a few months now and she didn’t want to fall back on what was familiar. She walked over and opened the front door. “Happy Thanksgiving and I’ll see you later at mom’s house when you drop the kids off.”

“You sure will,” Justin said with a sincere smile. “Happy Thanksgiving to you.” He walked out of the house as she closed the door shut behind him. She smiled, because it felt good, but she couldn’t trust Justin anymore; not right now anyway.

Janay lay in bed with the cell phone by her head. After taking Bianca’s advice she offered to pay the first Rugrat that found her phone five dollars. They were surprised that Bianca’s six year old was the one that found it hidden in between the pillows on the sofa.

Janay had just hung up with her sweet husband and couldn’t wait to see him later that day. They discussed briefly what dinner was about with the Carters and the ex and her family. She felt that Finn was truthful about everything that happened. He even admitted hating the fact that his mom was wrong for putting him in that position and he was going to tell her exactly how he felt about it before he’d leave for Augusta.

She reached over and picked up her phone to call him then sat it back down. “Damn, Janay, y’all just hung up.” She whispered. She wasn’t the jealous type and never felt that she had any reasons to be, but competing with a man’s mom was something that she never had to do. As she reached for the phone it rang. She picked it up and smiled when she read
Hubby
on the caller ID.

“Hey Love,” she answered. “Didn’t we just hang up?” she grinned. All she heard was chatter in the background. “Hey babe,” she spoke louder, but still no response. She started to hang up and call him right back to tell him that his phone had called her, but before she could hang up she heard Finn’s mom’s voice in the background.

“How did you sleep, Heather?” she asked with a chuckle at the end.

“I slept good, Mama Carter.” She grinned. “It was the best rest I’ve gotten in a long time.” Heather responded.

Janay’s heart rate shot through the roof. Her bullshit radar went from 0 to 1000 in a matter of a milli second. Finn had told her everything except the fact that his ex stayed the night at his mom’s house where he stayed. She sat up trying to listen in as the conversation freely sounded off in her ear as if she was a fly on the wall in the Carter’s house watching them.

“Finn, your coffee is ready,” Mrs. Carter called out. Not a minute later, Finn was entering the kitchen. As he bent corner to the kitchen and saw Heather standing there he jumped a little.

“I thought you had left already this morning.” He said then turned to walk back down the hallway.

“Where are you going?” Mrs. Carter quickly asked.

“To put my shirt on,” he said.

“You weren’t worried about no shirt last night,” Heather laughed causing Finn to re-enter the kitchen.

“Yeah well if you hadn’t gotten so tipsy off of that wine then my shirt never would’ve come off.”

Mrs. Carter laughed out loud. “My gosh, get a room.” She said trying to sound hip.

Finn frowned. “Mom, stop now. I’m married.”

“He keeps reminding me,” Heather said.

“But to the wrong one,” Mrs. Carter bluntly stated then exited the kitchen leaving Heather and Finn alone. He grabbed his coffee then drank from it.

“You were feeling pretty good last night. I didn’t know you drink like that,” he said.

Heather smiled. “I’m not married to a bishop.” She said. “You’re lucky I didn’t bring my Belvedere or you would’ve been in trouble.”

Finn grinned. “You are still something else.” He responded thinking back at the fun times him and Heather used to have.

Heather walked over to him and ran her manicured nails lightly over his firm chiseled chest. “And you still won’t admit your feelings for me,” she said then kissed him softly on the lips.

Finn backed up quickly. “I have,” he whispered then ran his fingers across his lips as if he was removing her remnants.

“So you love your wife?” She asked.

“Yes I do,” he said. “And this right here… You and me will never happen,” he stated.

“That’s what your mouth says, but what about your heart?” She asked. Finn just stared at her. At that point he didn’t know what to say, because he’d tried his best to make it clear that he didn’t want her. “I’m sure I’ll see you around.” She grabbed her purse off of the counter. “Tell your mom that I did enjoy my stay.”

Finn nodded his head indicating that he would let her know as he sipped from his coffee. All he wanted was for her to leave, but before she could make her final exit she turned and looked at him.

“Your lips still do something to me.”

Finn was speechless. He didn’t know how he could even let her get up that close to him. If Janay found that out she would kill him. He knew that he had to get dressed so he wouldn’t be late getting to Augusta, but before he exited the kitchen he noticed his phone over on the kitchen counter by the sink..

“Damn, I didn’t realize that I’d left my phone in here.” He said then pushed it down in his front pocket.

The call ended as Janay sat there eyes full of water and angered enough to make a personal trip to Marietta and kick everybody’s ass. At that point, Finn was already coming so she decided to just wait and try her best to keep her cool until she saw him face to face. She could feel in heart that this Thanksgiving was going to be one that nobody was going to forget; especially if Finn’s story didn’t add up about his ex-girlfriend Heather.

Chapter11

Bianca sat outside on the side porch as the nippy air blew lightly through her hair. She always kept her hair pulled up in a ponytail, but for Thanksgiving she’d decided to let it hang. She sat there sipping on some wine and waiting for the family to show up. It wasn’t going to be just the Ware sisters, but also a few more family members that they were close with.

For the most part her system was clean besides the red wine that she’d been sipping on from her mom’s stash. Unfortunately for her, the high was nothing like the high she wanted. She peeked around the side of the house as the family members had started pulling up one by one. There was always about fifteen to twenty people that showed up for the Thanksgiving feast which was more than enough for Bianca. If it wasn’t a crowd in a club then she wasn’t really a people person and anybody that knew her knew that.

She peeked around the side of the house again and smiled when she saw her bestie, Tessa walking up.

“Sssssssspp,” she called out to her in hopes that she could hear her. Luckily for her, Tessa did and skipped around the side of the house where she was at.

“Hey Girrrl!!” Tessa called out then hugged her tightly.

“Hey Girrrl!!” Bianca responded while hugging her back. She’d missed her friend, but knew why her family wanted her to stay away from her. Tessa had always been known as a loose cannon and very loose in the ass. She was associated with ecstasy pills, mollies, and had even put a ruffie in an ex’s drink once just so she could take pictures of them naked together then sent them to his new girlfriend.

“Damn, you bought just what I needed.” Bianca said noticing the big bottle of Belvedere hanging out of her pink duffle bag.

“I know that these Ware gatherings only consist of wine, water, or sweet tea except for that personal bottle that Kita carries in her pocketbook.” They laughed.

“You already know,” Bianca said taking the bottle out of the duffle bag and unscrewing the top on it. She didn’t waste any time turning it up.

“Damn, it has been a while.” Tessa teased. “I had some chaser down in that bag somewhere.”

“Fuck chaser,” Bianca said. “I just want to get fucked up and enjoy myself. I haven’t had a good time or felt alive since the last time I was with Kory.” She thought about being in the hospital. “I had checked out for a week, probably trying to figure out if I wanted to go with him or not.” She grinned to cover the pain. “But knowing him he probably urged me to come back. The only problem was waking up with a piece of me still with him.”

“Damn,” Tessa said. “Take the edge off man,” she said handing Bianca one of her favorites, an ecstasy pill. Bianca popped the pill with no hesitation then drank again from the bottle of Vodka.

Tessa looked over at her. “I got a cup in the bag too if you wanna hide what you’re drinking,” she said peeking around the house as a couple more cars pulled up.

“You got everything in this ugly ass pink bag,” Bianca laughed, pulling out a small foam cup and pouring her a drink.

“Tops for that cup and straws are in there too,” Tessa said smacking her lips like she never came out the house unprepared. Bianca laughed out loud then covered her own mouth. She definitely didn’t want to attract attention over their way, because they were hot as fire on the side of the house with all kinds of illegal shit.

Tessa peeked back around the house and smiled causing Bianca to take a look to see what or who she was looking at. Bianca just shook her head.

“YESSSS,” Tessa spoke. “Your brother in law is fine as hell.” She said watching Finn exit his 2012 Chevy Camaro. He had on a baggy pair of True Religion Jeans and a plaid long sleeve True Religion flannel shirt. He walked with the coolest swag a Bishop could have in his dark leather Polo boots and a pair of Cartier shades.

“The sun ain’t even out and that nigga got on shades. Shiiiiit, that’s what you call cool,” Tessa said as if she was straight in love with Finn.

“My sister hit the jackpot with that one,” Bianca said just hoping that Janay was able to hold on to him because the devil was definitely trying to come in and take over.

“I was at church that Sunday he prayed and you woke up,” Tessa told her. “It was like he felt that it was gonna happen.”

“He probably did,” Bianca said as she remembered waking up to her daddy who was there praying his heart out over her. “I heard a lot about that day.” She added. “They made such a fuss over me, because they knew that Kory was gone and nobody knew how to break the news to me.”

“Yeah, that was so sad. I’d come by the hospital a few times to see you, but I couldn’t stay because it hurt too bad to not know if you were going to wake up.”

“I know,” Bianca said. “Mommy told me.”

“But the day we talked on the phone when you called me girrrrrl,” she said with excitement. “I got on my knees and thanked God for that.”  Bianca smiled. “I was glad you made it.”

“Me too, even though one of us didn’t.” She sadly said.

Tessa pulled out a small bag of cocaine. “I don’t know about you, but after we get our bellies full I’m going out with Marlon.”

“Your ex Marlon?” Bianca asked with a frown knowing that Tessa had been dumped that fool.

“Yes, girl,” Tessa responded. “Marlon is doing it now girl. He got one of them good jobs working out of town AND he’s still side hustling. He ain’t that broke down nigga I used to talk too. The nigga got a lil cake now and he wants to treat tonight. Are you down?” She said bumping a shot of coke up her nose.

“Hell yeah,” Bianca said just wanting to forget that Kory ever existed. She was so drained of trying to imagine him being other places but never able to talk to him. All she wanted to do was escape and Tessa was the right person to help her with that. “Le’me hit that shit.” She said pointing at the small bag of powder.

“Now, B,” Tessa said. “You know I don’t let you do everything I do. Your family already thinks I’m the worse friend you could’ve ever had.”

“Man, I don’t wanna hear that shit. I just wanna try it to get through today. I’m just so tired of people walking around on eggshells around me like I’m gonna break down or something.”

“Have you broken down yet?” Tessa asked.

“Not really,” Bianca admitted. She’d been struggling with Kory’s death for weeks, but was trying her best to be strong because she knew that they were expecting her to crumble. Determined to prove them wrong and get through the day she took the bag of powder from Tessa and snorted some of its contents from the scoop of her fingernail. “Now let’s go mingle and get ready for a night out on the town.” She said sipping on as much liquor from her straw as she could then led the way into the family home.

**********

Everyone had eaten and the food was delicious and seasoned to perfection. A bunch of full stomachs were now enjoying some of the finest wines to really relax them. Bianca and Tessa sat over in the corner already beyond buzzed from some of everything.

ShaKita walked over to Lauren who was just chilling in her own zone. She still had shit on her mind that she didn’t care to talk about and being there was supposed to take her mind off it.
