Epilogue

Our week at the beach came to an end. Ashley had left the
day after our amazing evening, assuring me that absolutely nothing about our
relationship had changed. I was glad about that. Even though the events of the
night before last were incredibly intimate and way more than we'd ever come
close to doing, I still wanted her to be my best friend.

As we were packing up the car once again, my mother said, “I
think Ashley should come home with us for Fall Break.” My eyes widened and I
locked eyes with Paul. “Wouldn't that be nice, honey? She's such a lovely
girl.”

“Yeah!” I answered too quickly. “She is. That would be
awesome. Good idea, mom.”

Paul looked at me while we piled our bags in the trunk and
winked. I just hope mom didn't notice my smile.

Chapter One

“You’re getting old dad,” I said laughing as I saw my
stepfather struggling to carry all of his and my bags on the porch of our beach
home. It was summer time and normally me, my mother April, and my stepfather
Joseph, came to the beach house for our vacation, but this year a slight change
of plans occurred. Unfortunately, my mother was home sick with the flu and
instead of calling our vacation off, my mom was kind enough to tell us that we
could still go. Being the twenty-three-year-old woman that I am, naturally I
had to bring my best friend Theresa in my mother’s place.

“That’s because you’re too lazy to carry your bags,” Joseph
said dropping the heavy bags on the porch. His beach house was the only one in
the area so he knew that if he left the bags out there for a little while that
they wouldn’t get stolen. Laughing again, I walked over to the mad man and
kissed him on the cheek.

“I’m just messing with you,” I said grabbing my bags.
“Leave yours. Since you brought them up on the porch, I’ll put them in the
rooms.”

“You’re such an ass,” Theresa said laughing as she walked
onto the porch with her bags. She knew that I enjoyed messing with my dad, but
Theresa told me on countless occasions that she felt that I was a little too
old to be playing these types of games. “Why are you so childish? Don’t you
want to grow up soon?” Theresa asked me once I came back. Grabbing my father’s
bags quickly, I scurried to his bedroom down the hall completely disregarding
what Theresa had just said.

“It’s alright, she’s just trying to keep me from getting
fat.” Joseph laughed. I knew that he didn’t mind carrying my bags and I knew
that he pretends to be bothered by it just to humor me. “She’s just bored so
she decided to pick on her old man.” Theresa couldn’t help the broad smile that
went across her face. Theresa told me that she was happy that Joseph and I got
along so well because they're a lot of people that cannot stand their
stepparent or stepchild. Also the fact that Joseph’s been in my life ever since
I was five helped the situation.

“If the bags were honestly too much for him, he would’ve
made me grab some of them. Sometimes I like to pretend I’m young Tee-tee. It
helps me forget about all of these bills I have to pay.” I still regret moving
out of my parents’ house straight after college, but I wouldn’t trade my
freedom for anything in the world. “You mind if we go for a swim? I’ve been
thinking about it all day and it looks like we’ll have the beach to ourselves.”
Even though we owned the beach house and the surrounding land, people still
went to the beach. Joseph doesn’t mind though because it’s not like we’re
always at the house to tell people to get off of our property.

“Go ahead, I’m going to have a drink.” My once elated expression
quickly turned to a worried one because mom has been telling me that Joseph had
been drinking more and more lately. I don’t know what his problem is, but I
hope that it won’t cause any problems while we’re here.

“You coming right?” I asked turning towards Theresa.

“You don’t even have to ask, of course, I’m coming.” We
didn’t waste any time in getting to our room and getting changed. When we
finally descended the stairs, we were both dressed to navigate the calm water
and show off just in case people did come to the beach.

“Let me see your swimsuits. I don’t want to have to go
outside with my shotgun just in case some guys come around.” I couldn’t help
the smirk that went across my face. I knew that the forty-seven-year-old
business man didn’t own a gun. The way that he was raised, in a very
comfortable family setting, I’m sure that Joseph hadn’t even touched a gun
before.

“Fine,” I said unwrapping the towel from my feminine frame.
I wore a two-piece green sequined swimsuit that made my hazel colored skin
glow. The swimsuit hugged every inch of my curvaceous body in an appealing way,
and my wild chestnut hair was pulled back in a ponytail. My dimpled-cheeks
broadened as my stepfather’s eyes scanned over my semi-naked body. “I look
great don’t I?” I said and Joseph’s eyes slowly went up to meet my chocolate
ones.

“Do you have anything else to put on?” Joseph asked after
much thought. Raising my arched eyebrow, laughter erupted from my rosy lips.

“Excuse my language, but I’m a grown ass woman, dad.” Joseph
frowned and looked at Theresa, who wasn’t dressed any better. The
twenty-four-year-old had on a cheetah print Brazilian bikini that barely
covered her private areas. The majority of the latte colored skin of her
freshly waxed genitalia was showing and just about the only thing covering her
massive breasts was a thin piece of cloth. Theresa’s jet black pixie cut hair
was all over the place and she was grinning widely. Sighing, Joseph shook his
head.

“What the hell am I going to do with you two? Just because
you’re over the age of twenty-one doesn’t mean you can dress any way you want
to.”

“Why not? There’s nobody here but us.” I personally didn’t
understand why he was so bent out of shape about it because it wasn’t like he
was my real father or anything like that.

“Those…. outfits give men the wrong idea about what type of
person you are.” I saw Theresa looking from side to side like someone would
appear in front of us at any moment.

“What men? There was nobody on the beach when we got here,
Joseph.”

“Look at your swimsuits. You’re begging for men to gawk at
you.” I couldn’t help the hysterical laughs that shook my body. It wasn’t that
he didn’t want anybody looking at us, from the looks of the man’s flushed
tanned skin, he was uncomfortable watching us.

“We’ll be back in a little while,” I said wanting to end the
conversation quickly. He might have wanted us to change, but we didn’t have to.
Both of us was grown and we made our own decisions.

“Your dad’s hot,” Theresa said out of the blue. The wind
started to pick up a bit once we got closer to the blue-green water. Most
people would have been disgusted to have one of their friend’s call their
parent hot, but I wasn’t one of those people. The man was very attractive and
he didn’t look anywhere near his age even though I constantly made cracks at
him for being old. Joseph was tall, six-foot-two and around one hundred of
eighty pounds of pure muscle. There wasn’t a single strand of gray in his jet
black hair and he kept his face nice and cleaned up. When he wasn’t wearing his
signature suits, he wore designer polo shirts with casual pants. The man wasn’t
bad looking at all, Joseph was definitely three steps up from Theresa’s slob of
a father.

“Yeah, he looks good.”

“Eeww.” Theresa joked with me and I playfully swatted at
her.

“What? I just agreed with what you said. Besides, he’s not
blood so it’s legal.” Laughing, I dropped my towel in the sand and ran towards
the fresh water. Running in after me, I couldn’t help but to notice that
Theresa’s breasts bounced around a lot as she splashed water on me.

“Damn girl, you left nothing to the imagination,” I said
shocked that her breasts had yet to slip out of the thin piece of fabric.
Laughing, she grabbed her boobs and bounced them up and down.

“You sound like Joseph, old woman.” Splashing Theresa back,
I began laughing. It’s been a while since we got the chance to hang out so I
was glad that she said yes to coming on the trip with us. Looking over at the
beach house then, I noticed my stepfather watching us play in the water
intently with a beer in his hands.

Chapter Two

“Your nipples are hard,” I said nonchalantly when Theresa
had unwrapped the towel from around her when we got in the house. Shooting me a
quick glare, Theresa’s eyes looked around. “What are you looking for?” I asked,
but I already knew the answer before she told me.

“I’m making sure that you dad’s not around,” Theresa said
after she made sure the coast was clear. “Kendall, don’t you think your dad’s
acting a little strange?”

“Yeah, there’s something definitely off with him.” Joseph
was throwing back the cans of beer left and right and even though he complained
about what me and Theresa looked like in our bathing suits, he was staring
pretty hard. “My mom was telling me that he’s been drinking a lot more,” I said
lowering my voice. Joseph had come back in the house a little while ago, but we
weren’t sure exactly where he was.

“I know I saw him. I mean I know it’s just beer and all, but
still.” Theresa said pausing when we heard footsteps approaching us.

“You two didn’t bring any men in here did you? Grown or not
that’s still disrespectful.” Joseph said coming into the kitchen.

“Nope and you’ll be happy to know that Theresa and I were
the only two down on the beach,” I said. Joseph’s eyes were red, and his words
slurred slightly together. I knew he was drunk, but I didn’t know by how much.

“Good,” he said, and I couldn’t help but notice his light
eyes glancing quickly at Theresa’s breasts and my face heated when I saw that.
No matter how old I get, it was never okay for a child to see their parent
checking out their friend. It doesn’t matter that Joseph isn’t my real father.
Theresa apparently noticed his sly peek and she glanced over at me like she was
asking me, “Did you just see that?”

“Don’t you think you’ve had enough beers?” I asked as Joseph
pulled another can out of the refrigerator. There was something wrong with him
because he never drank as much as he was drinking now. He also looked
irritated.

“Remember how you two said that you're grown and can do
whatever you want? That same thing that you two said applies to me as well.”
Joseph said placing the can on his lips and closing his eyes as he drunk its
bitter contents.

“What’s going on, Joseph?” Theresa asked wrapping her towel
back around her frame. I can tell that she was just as confused as I was. Was
he drinking this much because we managed to piss him off? It took a lot to piss
Joseph Wilder off and I found it hard to believe that our bathing suits caused
his sour mood.

“You two sound like cops with all of these questions,” He
said laughing. “I’m on vacation, I’m trying to have a good time.”

“But you never drink this much,” I interjected.  “Is
everything alright with you and mom?” I knew that it technically wasn’t my
business, but maybe Joseph and my mother was going through problems which led
him to drink.

“Nothing’s wrong Ken,” he said draining his can. “I’m
heading to my room.” Joseph didn’t give me any time to object before he turned
around and walked away.

“Wow,” Theresa said shaking her head. “I think that’s the
first time I’ve seen him agitated.” I’ve seen Joseph stirred plenty of times,
but he typically didn’t show that side of him to other people. “Did you see him
check me out?” Theresa asked grinning. “He’s hot, but never would have
considered him checking me out as a possibility.” I sighed at this. All jokes
aside, Joseph was a good man and would never have looked at Theresa when he was
sober. Other than his unusual drinking habit, mom said that he treats her the
same way he treated her when they were dating, amazing.

“He’s not thinking about you like that, Theresa. It’s the
booze so don’t get your hopes up.” I said laughing. I’m a rational adult, so I
knew that alcohol made us do things out of the ordinary. Joseph would not
disrespect me, my mother, nor Theresa by checking her out. “Just because you
think he’s hot doesn’t mean that you can start making up all these fantasies
involving you and him,” I added.

“If you say so, but if he keeps looking at me like that, I’m
going to have to give him the business.” Even though Theresa got on me when I
was joking around with my father, she sure didn’t have a problem joking around
when he wasn’t in the room.

“Whatever,” I said making my way out of the kitchen. “I’m
about to go upstairs and call it an early night.” We’ve been on the road
majority of the day because Joseph didn’t want to fly here. I wanted to take a
long hot bath and go to sleep.

“Alright, I’ll be up there later.” Theresa said and went
back outside. It was getting chilly outside, but Theresa always said she liked
looking up at the sky when she was around an ocean. Shaking my head, I quickly
went upstairs to get in the tub.

****

“Damn,” I groaned once I opened my eyes to be greeted by
darkness. After I had taken my bath, I quickly came back to Theresa’s and my
room, but I couldn’t remember ever falling asleep. Reaching my hand to search
on the nightstand for my phone to see what time it was, I was shocked to see
that it was two in the morning. “Why can’t I sleep?” I whispered to myself. I
never had a hard time sleeping, and I always slept soundly, so I honestly
didn’t understand what had woken me up. Shining my light towards Theresa’s bed,
I raised my thin eyebrow when I realize that she wasn’t in bed.

“Is she still outside?” getting up from my bed quickly, I
made my way downstairs. I was sure that Joseph was probably asleep by now, so I
made sure to walk as softly as possible. “His light is still on.” Looking down
the hall, I saw Joseph's door cracked open with a bright light coming from it.
“I can’t believe he’s still up.” I said but made a b-line towards the front
door. When Theresa and I went on spring break when we were still in school, she
always stayed outside and watched the moon. Growing up in the country and
moving to the city made her miss the stars.

“Theresa!” I yelled as I began walking along the beach. It
felt different outside, and I didn’t mean the cooler air. For some reason the
beach appeared to be more peaceful and beautiful at night. I’ve never gone to
the beach and stayed passed nine, but seeing it at almost three in the morning
was rather pleasant. “She’s not here,” I said once I looked up and down the
beach. Not wanting to miss the moment, I held my phone up and tried to get as
much moonlight as possible and took a picture. I could see why Theresa had
wanted to stay outside a little longer because it was breathtaking.

“Where is Theresa, though?” I asked myself after I had taken
some more pictures. Walking back into the house, I went into the kitchen and
made me sandwich. Sitting down in the dark room, I ate my late night snack all
the while looking down the hall at my stepfather’s room. I found it odd that he
was still up and I found it unusual that his room was the only place that I
hadn’t checked for Theresa. “Maybe they’re talking,” I said to myself. Joseph
apparently was going through a lot, and maybe Theresa decided to ask him about
it. If Joseph is having a problem with my mother, I doubted that he’d open up
to me about it because he didn’t want to sound like he’s disrespecting her.

“Maybe I should listen to them because I do have the right
to know what’s wrong with him.” I knew it was childish of me, but they left me
no other choice. Finishing my sandwich quickly, I stood up and took in a long
breath to calm myself. “I’m so stupid,” I said chuckling to myself. A
twenty-three-year-old shouldn’t have to feel the need to sneak around, but I
felt like this was the only way I was going to get some answers.

“Ah!” Pausing in fright, I listened closely to the sound of
Theresa’s voice. I was a little surprised at first because that was not the
sound that I was expecting to hear when I decided to listen to what Theresa and
Joseph were saying. Hearing that made me nervous and it almost made me want to
turn around and go back upstairs to my room.

“Theresa?” I asked walking slowly down the hall. That did
not sound like the two of them was having a friendly conversation so what the
hell was Theresa doing in Joseph’s room? As I got closer to the door, the
sounds that they made grew louder, and only a young and naïve person wouldn’t
know what they were doing. Before I even stuck my face up to the slightly ajar
door, I already knew that they were having sex. Realizing this instantly pissed
me off because not only was my stepfather cheating on my mom; he was also
cheating on my mom with my best friend.  No matter what I said to convince
myself that they probably were not doing anything, Theresa’s pleasure filled
voice quickly reminded me that I was lying to myself. Taking in another deep
breath, I peered through the door.
