The rest of our week was fantastic and even though Theresa
and I didn’t talk much, Joseph and my relationship noticeably improved. Theresa
didn’t say anything to my stepfather after that night, from my knowledge, at
least, and I was relieved by that.

“I’m sorry,” Theresa said when I was putting my clothes in
my suitcase. I was leaving my bathing suits at the beach house because this was
the only time I went swimming. I have a dozen at home, not nowhere as cute, but
I have them just in case I needed them.

“For what?” I asked looking her deeply in the eyes. I was
happy that I managed not to alert her suspicion too much when it came to what
she and Joseph did.

“I feel like, we haven’t spoken much at all.” She said sadly
and for the first time I finally realized that she had avoided me the week as
well.

“Don’t worry about it, you seem like you were going through
some things, so I’m happy that you were finally able to wind down.” She sucked
her teeth and nodded her head. I knew that she wanted to tell me that she slept
with Joseph and I could tell that it was eating her up inside. I knew that I
said that I’d never speak to Theresa again after this day, but I can’t just let
it end this way. She’s been my best friend and partner in crime since we were
kids and I knew that now as adults, I would never find anyone as amazing as
her. Without thinking about it, I walked closer to her and wrapped my arms
around her. I could tell that she was shocked, but she wrapped her arms around
me as well.

“I’m so sorry,” she whispered again and at that moment I
knew that she knew that her secret was out. I spent this whole week avoiding
the same person that I was so happy accompanied us on our vacation this year.

“I know, I’m sorry too.” I couldn’t treat her this way by
saying that she betrayed my mother and me when I turned around and did the same
thing. Pulling away from each other we stared at each other with goofy grins on
our faces. “You have a mean tan,” I noted as I looked at the discoloration of
certain places on her body.

“You’re one to talk,” Theresa said laughing. It felt good to
hear her laugh again because she hadn’t laughed at all this week.

“You finished packing? Need help because I’m done.”

“Nah, I’m alright.” Theresa said and dumped the remaining of
her clothes in her burgundy suitcase. “It’s going to suck going to work Monday,
though.” Theresa said and I couldn’t help but to agree. Having a week off of
work with pay was amazing and now we had to be brought back to reality.

“Yeah, but we got to do what we got to do,” I said and
grabbed my suitcases. “See you in the car.” I said and walked out of the room.
When I got to the bottom of the stairs and stopped at the kitchen, I was
surprised to see Joseph opening up all of the excess beer cans and pouring them
down the drain. “What are you doing?” I asked surprised. Looking up at me
smiling he snorted.

“What do you think? I’m doing what I should have done a
while ago.” I watched Joseph pour the contents of each can in the sink, and I
couldn’t help but to grin. I felt like crap for thinking this, but I’m glad his
mistake with Theresa and his mistake with me was enough to snap him out of his
drinking habits. I knew that wasn’t enough though, and he’d need to go to a few
alcoholic anonymous classes, but he was a man of his word, and he always kept
the promises that he made. “Sorry, that I wasn’t the best this weekend.” He
said, and I nodded my head and took a deep breath.

“I’m sorry too,” I said to him and he raised his eyebrow. I
knew he was curious about what I was sorry about, but I wasn’t going to tell
him because it was better that he didn’t know. Grabbing my bags again, I took
them outside and discarded them in the truck of Joseph’s larger SUV. “I’ll load
yours up too,” I said once I had come back into the house. His bags were neatly
stacked by the door and I was grateful that I didn’t have to walk the long
distance back and forth to the car.

“About time,” Theresa said throwing her bags in the trunk
after I had organized them so that they’d fit better.

“Shut up,” I said laughing. We lounged around outside
talking until Joseph was ready to move out.

“Time to hit the road, it’s going to be a long drive.”
Theresa and Joseph avoided each other’s eyes, but for the most part, they had
spoken to each other when needed. Closing my eyes as the sunlight danced on my
face I thought about everything that had happened. I couldn’t tell my mother what
happened because it would kill her and I know that she’d be disgusted with me
and would probably not want to talk to me again and she was right. What Joseph
and I did was beyond disgusting and what made it remotely okay was the fact
that he wasn’t my real father.

“Do you miss mom?” I asked him. I honestly wanted to know
his answer.

“Of course I miss your mom, Kendall. We’ve always gone
together as a family.” I smiled to myself at this. Joseph, Theresa, and I each
had our share of wrong doing this week, and I was hoping that we’d be able to
get passed this as quickly as possible. However, I couldn’t say that our
vacation was fully a waste because whatever demons Joseph was fighting, he was
finally able to acknowledge them and take measures to get rid of them. Once
everything was said and done, at least, he’d go back home to my mother a better
man, and that in itself made me happy so at the end of the day, this turned out
to be an amazing vacation for me.

Chapter One

“So how was your day sweetheart?” Gerald asked as we sat in
his favorite restaurant after he had picked me up from work.

“Oh, work was work.” I said rather dry. Work seemed to have
gone on too long today and I really needed a vacation. I worked at a café and I
had to be the manager for the day because our manager was sick. I’ve been there
the longest and I knew the ropes inside and out so I wasn’t surprised when I
was asked to fill in for her. Gerald frowned then.

“Michelle, don’t you think it’s time for you to find
something else to do?” I really hated when Gerald asked me things like that. We
all couldn’t be junior sales managers at a major company. Gerald wasn’t the
richest man in the world, but the man did have quite a bit of money to just
throw around whenever he wanted something new.

“I like my job, Gerald. It’s stressful, but I like it.”
Gerald sat back in his seat still frowning.

“I just feel that if you asserted yourself a little more,
then you’d definitely land another job. Come intern at my company, I’ll hire
you in fulltime once you’ve learn how everything works.” I held up my hand. He
was starting to piss me off and I needed to stop him from speaking before he
ruins our date.

“I have to go to the bathroom.” I got up from my seat and
walked quickly into the bathroom. I heard him call my name before I entered in
it. There were a few women in the bathroom when I entered into a stall. I
didn’t really have to go but I sat down onto the porcelain seat and pulled out
my cellphone. I surfed through the web for a few minutes before Gerald became
too suspicious and came looking for me. I exited the stall, washed my hands
since there were people in there and I didn’t want them to think that I was
trifling.

“What took you so long?” Gerald asked once I’d returned to
my seat. I stared at him blankly.

“I’m sorry for being a woman and just can’t whip it out of
my pants” I saw his face heating up under my gaze. He averted his eyes from
mine.

“Oh, I’m sorry.” Gerald muttered under his breath. It was
now official; my evening had gone straight to hell. We ate the remainder of our
food in silence and after he paid the bill, he drove me home. “I had fun,”
Gerald said after ten minutes of awkward silence. I didn’t really have fun
since our conversation turned sour after he kept questioning my employment
choices.

“Same here” I said and leaned over to give him a quick kiss
on the lips. He grabbed my wrist before I got out of the car.

“Can I come in for a little while?” Gerald asked and I
sighed on the inside. Gerald was really trying to get me to have sex with him
and I wasn’t ready. At twenty-four years old I was still a virgin and I wanted
to keep it that way. Gerald and I have been together for a few months and even
though I liked him and he really liked me, I didn’t want to give myself to him
yet. I wasn’t entirely sure if he was the one for me yet.

“I’m really tired, maybe some other time.” He released my
wrist then and I got out of the car. I lived at home with my mother still
because I didn’t make enough to live on my own yet, so I kind of understood
what Gerald meant about me finding something better. “I’m home!” I called out
to my mother once I was fully in the house.

“Good evening, how was work?” My mother came out of the
kitchen and made her way to me. She kissed me lightly on the forehead before
she picked up some of the mail that was still on the floor in the hallway.

“I had to work as the manager today because Justine called
in sick.”

“Are they going to give you her pay for the day?” My mother
asked raising her eyebrow.

“They better,” I said laughing. She patted me on the back and
began throwing away junk mail.

“Your plate’s in the microwave.” I had barely eaten anything
at the restaurant because I was in a bad mood, so I decided to eat the plate
that my mother fixed for me. I felt bad as I made my way through the macaroni
and cheese. I’m a bigger girl which I am always reminded of when I ate. It’s
just that food never hurts me or pisses me off and it’s always there for me
when I had a long day.  I could turn to food when I couldn’t turn to anyone
else. So I continued eating my macaroni and cheese telling myself that it was
helping me in the long run. After I ate I went back into the hallway to see if
I had some mail. I saw an envelope with my name on it.

“Mom, Jeremy’s having a little party at his place on
Wednesday. We’re going?” Jeremy was my stepbrother on my father’s side and he
was apparently a billionaire. I’ve only saw him a few times as adults, but
judging by the way he dresses, he definitely had a lot of money.

“Honey, no offense but I really don’t want to see your
father and I know he’s going to be there.” My mother and father didn’t get
along at all. My father had cheated on my mother when she was pregnant with me
with a woman who had a young child, Jeffery. Ultimately my mother left my
father, and shortly after that he had created a successful business and had
married his mistress. Shockingly, he still wanted to be in my life and tried to
see me as much as possible on the weekends, but he never really took me around
his new family. I understood how my mother felt so I didn’t press her any
further on the situation.

“I guess I’ll take Gerald.” Gerald would love the atmosphere
of being around all of the wealthy people who were surely going to be at the
event. However, I knew that it’ll make him push me harder about getting another
job. I wasn’t looking forward to that, but if I didn’t take him, he’d never let
me hear the end of it. Gerald made it his goal to take me to every event that
he went to. He bought me clothes for the occasion and even paid to have my hair
and make-up done. I was starting to think that Gerald was trying to change me
to better fit his image of  a girlfriend, but I knew that wasn’t entirely true
because he looks at me with need all of the time. I couldn’t blame him, other
than my weight I was a knockout. I was five foot five with naturally big
breasts and curvy all over. My skin was delicate and blemish free and I always
kept myself well groomed. I wore clothes that complimented my body type, but
also screamed that I had confidence. My dark brown hair flowed past my
shoulders and Gerald couldn’t keep his hands out of it.

I was rather surprised when gorgeous Gerald came into the
café one day and asked for me specifically to wait on him. He’s a little on the
short side, maybe five ten, but he made up for it by wearing expensive suits
and keeping his facial hair and head groomed. His teeth were a brilliant white
and his eyes were so dark that I thought they would suck me in if I looked too
deeply into them. With all of the thin model type women there, I was even more
baffled when he asked me for my number. I got stared at a lot by men, but the
men who looked at me were nowhere near as wealthy as Gerald. I was very
fortunate to have met Gerald there that evening because he really changed my
life for the better. Nowadays, however, our relationship had gotten a little
dull, he was still sweet, but he was becoming a little too arrogant and
controlling.

“It’s not Jeffery’s fault that his father’s an asshole. Give
him my regards.” My mother shouted from the other room. My mother didn’t see
Jeffery as he was growing up. The few times that she did see him when he was
younger hurt her deeply. He really looked like the woman that my father cheated
on my mother with. My mother wouldn’t admit this, but she hated Jeffery for being
the son of a home wrecking whore. My mother told my father that he was not to
have his son in the car when I was with him. My father would argue that I had
the right to spend time with my brother, but my mother always countered that
the runt wasn’t her son, therefore I had no brother. His biological child or
not, my father would say to not speak about his son like he was nothing. My
mother said nothing then, she just called me over to them a planted a kiss on
my head.

“You can come home anytime you want even if it’s ten minutes
from now,” my mom would tell me. She hated me spending time with my father, but
she had to do as the court said, so she reluctantly allowed me to go with him.
On a few occasions, my dad would pick up Jeffery and take us to the park.
Jeffery was older than me by a few years, so he didn’t play with me that much,
but he did push me on the swings. I thought he was okay. I didn’t hate my
stepbrother at all, so it wouldn’t hurt for me to go to this party. If I was
lucky, I’d get a chance to see my father who I hadn’t seen in a while.
