He looked idly around the other inhabitants of the car, before his gaze fell her way and she could swear he did a slight double-take. She wondered if it was her new hairstyle, because he’d taken barely any notice of her before now.

But this time, she could tell she’d caught his interest, by the way he kept glancing in her direction. Tamara had to admit she’d begun to take extra care with her dressing and looks ever since she’d noticed that GQ-model type hunks – such as him - frequented the midnight subway.

She hid a smile, keeping her face devoid of expression as the train stopped at the terminal. This time, all the passengers in that section of the train went off – except him. She hadn’t realized she’d been holding her breath, wondering if this was his stop or not. But no; she remembered he was usually on for the long trip, coming off just a few stops from where she would finally alight.

Now they were the only ones in the car, which was the first time that would happen. There were usually a handful of other passengers but it looked like tonight was different, in a lot of ways…

The doors closed, and the train started to move again. Tamara suddenly wasn’t sure what to do or where to look, so she fell her head back on the seat and closed her eyes – afraid that if she didn’t do so, she’d be staring at him again. And that just wouldn’t do, would it? The last thing she’d want is to freak some white guy out for ogling him too damned long…

Then she heard it. His voice. It flowed across time and space and right into her eardrums like the tone of the sexiest kind of music. A voice like that…could make any woman glide readily out of her clothes and into his bed - like a snake being charmed out of its basket. His deep, throbbing voice registered in her senses sooner than his words did.

“I thought I was the only one ready to drop off - literally,” she heard him say with a friendly smile, shifting his coat and leather case to his left side.

She snapped her eyes open in surprise, and looked directly at him. He was still standing by the pole, which he finally released and started coming her way.
