Adley’s hands tentatively wrapped around her head and he began stroking her hair. Sarah fully widened her mouth to allow him to enter even deeper. She felt her jaw muscles start to sting as his size demanded much more room than what she could possibly accommodate. She moved her head up and down with a smooth gliding motion that was mimicked by her hand that held him below where her mouth simply could not reach.

Adley’s moans were no longer quiet, and he guided her head with each plunge of him into her mouth. His words stammered out in between his breaths, “Sarah, your mouth…so damn amazing. Oh my God, please…please don’t stop.”

Sarah knew that there was no way she would stop now. She was going to bring Adley to edge of this world, and let him come crashing into her mouth. She moaned with him fully in her mouth, and Adley sucked in his breath again. She felt him become even harder and his hips pressed into her until he was as much in her as she could contain. His hands on her head were soft, but she could sense his desire deepening.

A low groan came from Adley. “Sarah…oh Sarah...you’re going to make me…”

Sarah began even more fervently, pulling and sucking, telling him with her mouth that she was completely aware of what she was doing and wasn’t going to stop. Adley’s head tilted back as he gently thrust himself in and out of Sarah’s mouth as he held her head in place. She felt him thrust one final time until he burst into her mouth, with surges of his hot seed sliding down her throat. She held herself in place until she felt him relax, and begin to slowly run his fingers through her hair.

Sarah raised herself from him and he pulled her up to lay on him once again. She laid her head against his chest, hearing his heart, beat by beat, slow and become steady. He continued to caress her hair and her cheek. For the first time since getting to the loft, Sarah noticed the rain, but realized it was not nearly as fierce as earlier. It was incredibly peaceful, and yet her mind was reeling with feeling Adley in her mouth. Where her mind took her next was unavoidable. All she could think of was what it would feel like to have him inside of her, and let her body succumb to the certain pleasure of feeling him do what he had just done to her mouth. The obvious desire and intensity that Adley had for her, coupled with the way he was still so gentle when he touched her, brought Sarah’s craving for him to a whole new level. She could feel herself fall even deeper emotionally, as well as her body reacting to its longing to feel Adley in ways that left her warm and wet for his touch.

She lifted her head and rested her chin on her hands to look at him. She could make out the outline of features, and even in the shadows, they were striking. Sarah had to contemplate how different everything about her life had become. Not only had she come to terms with leaving Colorado and Will, but she had somehow managed to feel happy in California. She had Adley, a man that she could just simply look at and feel completely taken with desire. She marveled at the realization that whenever she was with him, he made her feel that next to him was where she belonged. The word ‘home’, finally had a different meaning for her. Home was Adley. The way he looked at her, how he made her feel, and how he wanted her, made all the pieces fall into place for her life now. For the first time since leaving Colorado, Sarah finally felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be.

Adley broke the silence as he sighed and whispered, “Hmmm…I think the rain is definitely my favorite kind of weather. Every time it rains, I’m going to think of this exact moment. Well, this, and what led up to this moment, I should say.”

Sarah was about to answer him when they heard the heavy barn door slide open. “Adley? Sarah? You two in here?” Oscar’s voice bellowed.

Sarah and Adley froze and widened their eyes on each other. Sarah couldn’t even take a breath, let alone answer. Adley clenched his teeth together and smiled at Sarah, knowing they had been caught in a compromising position didn’t seem to bother him nearly to the paralyzing extent that it did for Sarah.

“Yeah. We’re up here.” Adley yelled down to his father. Sarah stared even harder at him and shook her head. But Adley just smiled and shrugged his shoulders. Sarah actually caught the slight glimmer in his eyes that he rather enjoyed seeing her so nervous.

“We came up here to wait out the storm,” he continued to yell to his father.

“Oh. Well, it’s let up and I thought I better come out and check on you. I’ll go let Sarah’s folks know that she’s…with you.”

Now Adley was fighting off laughing out loud at Sarah’s panicked expression as he silently buttoned and zipped his pants. “We’ll be down in a few minutes. We were just enjoying the sounds of the storm from up here.”

Oscar paused and began walking back to the door. “Alright then, you two.” They listened as he slid the door closed, and the barn was once again silent against the intermittent ping of rain on the roof.

Sarah sat up and looked at Adley. “You’re quite enjoying that we just got caught, aren’t you?”

He stood and wrapped his arms around her and began kissing her neck. “It’s just too bad we got interrupted. I had other plans for you. Besides, you worry too much. We didn’t get caught doing anything but listening to the rain.”

“Yes, well, my parents aren’t going to let me out into the rain ever again if you know what I mean.”

Adley lifted his head from her neck and became very serious. “Your parents are going to know that I want you with me rain, or shine, Sarah.”

Now a flash as powerful as lightning bolted through Sarah, and her stomach fluttered anxiously as she looked into his eyes. “What?”

“You heard me, Sarah. I want to make you mine, in every way. I intend to talk to your dad about that.”

Sarah furrowed her brow at him and tried to suppress her smile and her nervousness. “Well, that’s all well and good, Adley, but don’t you think you should be talking to
me
about that first?”

Adley’s confident demeanor faded. “Well, I thought…I mean, really?”

Sarah held her serious expression, once again enjoying how the power over Adley was again hers. “Really. It’s awfully assuming of you. I mean, I’m still not sure how I feel about you. I’m undecided, in fact.”

Adley stared at her for another second before she could no longer contain her giggle. The concern on his face transformed to relief and then to amusement that she had managed to worry him. He picked her up and held her against his chest.

“Oh, really? Is that so? Well, you didn’t seem to be undecided with that sweet little mouth of yours. And I think you know exactly how you
feel
about me. I think you love how you feel when my hands are on your body, and when my mouth is on your body. ” He began running his hands up and down her body, lingering and accentuating his words.

Sarah writhed under his touch and finally relented to him. “Okay. Okay,” She caught her breath and looked up at him.

Adley’s seriousness returned, “I’m in love with you, Sarah. I can’t stop thinking about you, and I don’t want to stop. Everything about you makes me want more of you and I intend to show you for the rest of your life what you mean to me. I didn’t know until the day you got here, what I would do with my life. But now I know. I’m going to love you as hard as I can, and make you mine forever.” He paused before continuing, “Tell me, Sarah, please. I need to know.”

Sarah sucked in a deep breath her mind racing, “I--love you, too, Adley. I have for a long time. I’ve just been afraid to admit it. ”

Adley smiled, but looked at her with his mischievous grin, “What else, Sarah? Tell me.”

“I want you…to make me yours, Adley.”

He leaned down and kissed her mouth. “In every way?”

She kissed him back before whispering, “Yes, in every way.”

Chapter 47

Had Sarah known that her happiness from that night was only going to last a few more weeks, she would’ve savored every minute to its fullest. But, the attack on Pearl Harbor shocked the nation to its core, and rocked everyone’s sense of security to the point that no one could be sure of anything anymore. Of course, no one could’ve predicted the assault, but Sarah felt the familiar sick feeling that she had taken time for granted. Overnight, life completely changed for the entire country, and Sarah had no way of knowing that once again, everything would change for her with the opening of an envelope.

Adley and Matty had gotten their letters within a couple of days of each other. Each delivering the same foreboding message that whatever plans they may have had, were about to change, and would indefinitely be put on hold. Sarah was beside herself, and no matter how hard she tried, she could not keep the words of the letter from playing over and over in her mind.

You have been inducted to the military service. You are hereby instructed to report to Fort MacArthur.

Both Adley and Matty were being taken from her, and now with every minute that passed, Sarah had to fight the constricting grip around her throat that was laced with fear and shards of her heart. There was nothing she could do to change it, even though she would’ve done whatever it took, as long as it meant they could stay. Sarah was beginning to loathe the feeling of complete helplessness that surrounded her. Not only were Adley and Matty going to war, she was sure that Will was too.

Sarah could not believe the turn of events that once again put her into a tailspin. Prior to Pearl Harbor, for the first time in a long time, she had felt her life coming together. Adley had indeed talked to her father, but had also talked with her mother and Matty. Sarah loved that he had included them in the decision. He knew that all three of them would need to give their permission in sharing her, and they all did. But the part that really took her by surprise was the day Adley took her into the garden. She wondered what he could possibly be showing her, but what he proceeded to do, gave her a memory of the garden that would not be surpassed by any other.

Adley had put his arms around her as they both stared into the pink sunset that graced the farm almost every evening. She felt content just feeling him, and put her arms over his and leaned back into his chest.

“Sarah?” His voice was quiet, with the slightest hint of nervousness.

“Mmmm?”

“I need to tell you something.”

Sarah’s eyes had widened and her posture stiffened, “Okay.”

“I want you to know that I love you very much, and…I would be honored if you would be my wife, and spend the rest of your life with me.”

Sarah couldn’t believe the words that were being said to her and she turned in his embrace to look at him.

He took her hands, and dropped one knee to the ground and continued, “I want you for my own. Will you marry me?”

Sarah had fallen to the ground with him and fell into his embrace crying and laughing and repeating, “Yes!” over and over. She had agreed to marry Adley, she was utterly in love, and she was going to spend her life with this man.

But now as she stared into the garden, the memory replaying in her mind, she couldn’t help but let the silent teardrops fall from her cheeks onto the wooden fence. Her baby brother, who obviously was not a baby anymore, was going to war. It didn’t matter that Matty had become his own man, he would always be her baby brother, and the thought of him being put in harm’s way made her physically sick to her stomach. The sheer ruthlessness of fate taking her from Will, bringing her to Adley, and now taking him from her as well, filled Sarah with such abhorrence that she had begun to dig her nails into the soft weathered posts that guarded the garden. The emotions were too many and too cruel to contain, and she crumpled against the fence and sobbed uncontrollably; her tears staining the faded wood a dark gray. She had no single clue how she could survive the day she would have to tell her brother, and the man she planned to marry, goodbye, and watch them leave for a war that was completely indifferent to any plans they had made, or dreams for the future that may come. The element of it all that petrified Sarah the most, was sending them away to a war that may, or may not, let them return to her.

Despite her will, the Earth kept its routine of day and night until Sarah had one last day with Matty and Adley. She and Matty had decided to pack some snacks and leave the farm to go walking through the fields. Of course, Riley was invited along as well, as they knew they couldn’t have made him stay home. He was as loyal to Matty, as his shadow, and Sarah knew how hard it would be for her brother to leave all of them, including Riley.

They walked for a long time before either of them could swallow their hidden tears enough to talk.

Matty was the courageous one and began. “Well, Sar? I guess I’ll get to see the world, right?”

Sarah swallowed hard and did everything she could to not let the surge of tears break loose. She thought that maybe if she didn’t look at him, she possibly could do it. But, her eyes moved from the path in front of her to her brother’s face, and seeing his attempt to be brave, for her sake no doubt, made the flood of tears burst from her eyes. She ran over to him and wrapped her arms around him. He had grown to be quite a bit taller than her and he put his arms around her shoulders. “Don’t cry, Sis, please.”

But that was no longer a request that Sarah could control. “Matty,” she sobbed, “I don’t know how I will be able to stand letting you go. This is breaking my heart, Matty! I…I…can’t be without you. You’re my best friend.” Sarah was crying so uncontrollably that she could hardly complete her sentences.

Matty closed his eyes and rested his chin her head. He took a deep breath and whispered, “I know, Sar, I know.” He cleared his throat as his tears dropped onto her hair. “I guess it just goes to show that we don’t get to be in charge of everything, right?”

Sarah shook her head but refused to let go of him. “It’s not fair, Matty. Why? Why does this have to happen?”

“Because--” Matty paused in deep thought, “because it is my duty and privilege to stand up and be counted with those that protect our country, to do what is right. It sure as hell wasn’t fair what happened at Pearl Harbor. I guess I think of it as even though I’m not here with you and mom and dad, I am still protecting you. Besides, don’t you know that it doesn’t matter where you, and where I am, that we will always be with each other?”

Sarah sniffed and nodded her head. She knew that she wasn’t making this any easier for her brother. He was doing his best to ease Sarah’s pain, and she knew she had to do the same for him. She lifted her head and looked at him. He blinked his bright blue eyes at her. “Yes, Matty, I know that. Promise me you won’t forget that. No matter where you are, I want you to make sure you know that I am with you. Promise me, Matty.”

“I promise, Sar. Believe me, I could never forget my first friend, my best friend.”

Sarah hugged him tightly again. “I won’t forget, either. Promise me you’ll be careful, in everything you do.”

“Always, Sis. You know that.”

“No, promise me, Matty. In
everything.

“I promise. I’ll be careful in everything I do.”

She held onto him, concentrating on the moment so it would be permanently embedded in her memory. She could not forget what this moment felt like. She had her little brother, and he was safe. She would need this memory to get her through until the next time she could wrap her arms around her baby brother again.

She let him go and wiped the tears from her cheeks. They just looked at each other, and without a single word being said, Sarah knew what he was thinking, and he knew what she was thinking.
Nothing
would ever break their bond.

Sarah looked up at him. “Matty?”

“Yeah?”

“Friends?” Sarah held her out palm, doing her best to steady it and hold her breath so she would not start crying again.

Matty looked at her hand and back to her. He smiled as he fought a single tear that fell from his eye and ran down his cheek. He raised his hand and slid it across hers, “Friends.”
