She was quiet, and that made me turn around and look at her. I saw tears in her eyes, and I came closer.

“What’s up, Kat?”

She shook her head and tried to gather herself. “I’m pregnant.”

The shock I’m sure was all over me.
“Oh. My. God
. Does he know? Wait… Did he say something crazy like ‘he’s not ready for a baby’ or something stupid like that? Because if he did…”

She shook her head. “No, he doesn’t know yet.”

I watched the battle going on in her eyes, and I pulled up a chair next to her.

I said softly, “Then what’s going on? Are you afraid he’s not going to want the baby?”

She shrugged. “I’m afraid he might not want me.”

She finally broke down and started to cry. I wrapped my arms around her.

“I seriously doubt that, Kat. I see the way he looks at you even before he declared his undying love to you. That man is head over heels in love with you, and having a baby is not going to change that. I’m sure it will accelerate things slightly, but that’s all. Sweetheart, I wouldn’t worry about that. How far along are you?”

She sniffed. “I think I’m four weeks.”

“Okay, that’s early. But I do believe he would want to know. When is your doctor’s appointment, or did you have one already?”

She shook her head, drying her tears with the palms of her hands.

“The appointment is in two weeks.”

“Okay, so you have time. Honestly, what better time than the present? He’s coming over here tonight, right?” She nodded. “Okay, well make sure you tell him then. I know for a fact he’s going to want to be at the doctor’s appointment with you. Just give him a chance, Kat. If he acts like an ass, then you and I will raise this baby on our own. Either way, you’ll be fine.”

I hugged her tightly, and we stayed like that for a while until I heard my water boiling. I wiped my own eyes and smiled.

“Let’s get that little baby fed.”

I knew Kat would have nothing to worry about. I didn’t know AB that well, but I just had a feeling it would be okay. And I wasn’t surprised in the morning when she told me what happened.

We were sitting on the couch at about 11 a.m. She told me how he came into the apartment ready to jump her bones, when she told him they needed to talk.

“Okay, about what?” he asked her.

He took off jacket, tie, and shirt and draped them over a chair in her room. She sighed and sat Indian style in the middle of her queen size bed. She looked down at her fingers very nervous, and he caught on to it. He sat down on the bed and took her hand in his.

“Whatever it is, sweetheart, you can talk to me.”

Finally, she sighed again and said, “I’m pregnant, four weeks to be exact. Look, I know we aren’t that close. I know this is way too soon. But I’m still having your baby. Before you say anything, it is yours. Since I’m about four weeks pregnant, that would mean we conceived this baby on my birthday weekend.”

She paused and looked at him. He was quiet and just stared at her. She took her hand from his and started to move away from him, but he stopped her. His demeanor suddenly changed to anger. He frowned.

“First of all, I don’t ever want to hear you say we aren’t that close. I love the hell out of you, Tiffany. I don’t see myself being with anyone other than you. And for you to even mention you being with another man has me fuming. You damn right that is my baby, and don’t you fucking forget it.”

Kat looked at him shocked. He took a few deep breaths and then pulled her closer to him. He planted a gentle kiss on her lips and brought his hand to her stomach.

“You’re really pregnant?”

She nodded and watched a smile creep on his handsome face. He closed his eyes and then opened them.

“Is that why you’ve been sleepy so much and irritable?”

“Probably. My doctor’s appointment is in two weeks. Would you like to come with me?”

“Are you kidding? Without question, Tiffany, I want to be there. I mean we’re together in this.”

She told me it took a minute before she got used to the idea. But the way they then made love, how he caressed her stomach and body, she knew he meant everything he said.

I smiled. “See? You were worried for nothing. Now let’s hang out and watch lifetime movies all day.”

We made a big dinner, and Cory and AB came over that night. We just hung out, listening to music and talking about each other’s lives. Cory brought out a deck of cards, so we played Spades until Kat couldn’t hang anymore. She started getting a bad headache, so she and AB called it a night. Cory hung out for a while before he decided to leave as well.

Mason texted me that night asking how everything was going. It was the same as he’s been doing, except he told me he would stop by sometime this week. He told me he had something important to talk to me about, which made me smile. Maybe this was it. But he crushed that when his next text said, ‘about your father.’

Talk about a blow to the ego.

Anyway, I didn’t have to work tomorrow on either job, which I was thankful for. I texted him back to say okay and closed my eyes. This was the first time I didn’t dream about Mason. This time I dreamed about my grandparents; my grandfather especially. I was telling him about Mason, and he just smiled at me the way he used to and nodded his head approvingly. Or maybe it was just my sub-conscious wanting it to be so.

When I finally crawled out of the bed, I saw AB making himself some coffee. He smiled.

“Hey, I have confined your best friend to the bed today. She’s been throwing up this morning, and I want her to get as much rest as she can.”

“Aww. Morning sickness, huh? Well, it comes with the territory.”

He nodded. “I have another stupid thing to go to in the early evening, but I’ll call her, and I’ll be back tonight.”

I smiled at him. “I have her. You know, I’ll definitely keep an eye on her… And congrats.”

He had the most brilliant smile I had ever seen on his handsome face.

“Thanks, Max. I’ll see you later. Call me if you need me.”

When Kat finally got up, I made her breakfast, and I kept an eye on her as she lay on the couch. She was drifting in and out of sleep, telling me that her head still hurt. I asked if she wanted me to call her doctor. I knew she could take Tylenol for her headache, but it really wasn’t working.

I told her, “If you’re not feeling well by tonight, let’s go see the doctor.”

She smiled. “Okay.”

Chapter 22
Mason

My weekend was hectic, but I think I’ve done a lot. I had one fundraiser that I went to Sunday night, and I have another one tonight. This morning Roland and I met with Feds on what we had on the South American cartel. I knew they had a file on the family—or at least someone did—but I knew they didn’t know some of the cartel were in the states.

When I finally made it home, Diane was in my bedroom. She was no doubt pulling out something for me to wear. I pulled off my t-shirt and pulled my shorts off.

I mumbled, “I’m getting some sleep. I’ll be ready when it’s time to go.”

I didn’t wait for a reply. I just closed my eyes, and sleep came quick. When I finally woke, she was touching me. I looked at her warily.

“I’ll be ready in a few.”

I got up and noticed she was already dressed. It was a little after seven, and the dinner we were going to started at eight. We would be fashionably late, but I didn’t care. I hated going to these things. But Marcus was subjected to this while I was saving the world, so I figured it was the least could do.

I kissed Diane on the cheek, as I helped her out of my car.

“You look beautiful tonight.”

I was very preoccupied as I got ready, and I didn’t pay any attention. She wore a black long gown that went down to the ground, just revealing her high heels. Her hair was swept up, and she had some curls hanging on the side of her face.

We walked in and found the place crawling with money. I hated this scene, but Diane thrived off it. She started working the room instantly and introducing me to some lifelong buddies of her dad. When she saw my dad and Rick, she looked over at me.

“You’re father and Rick are here?”

I looked in the direction she was staring, and I nodded.

“So it seems.”

She looked at me. “Did you know they were coming?”

“No, but I would have hoped they’d be here. They need the business if they’re going to be a reputable company again.”

“What do you mean?”

I looked at her. “I sold my father’s company back to him. He is now back in the saddle again, and so is Rick. You have no idea how good it feels to be finally rid of them.”

“I can’t believe you gave him his business again. I mean, what the heck were you thinking?”

I stared at her for a minute. She really looked pissed at me.

“What business is it of yours what I do with my company?”

She realized I was getting angry, and she backed off. But I already noted her behavior, which I didn’t like.

“I’m just in shock, that’s all. I never would have believed you would ever give him that kind of power.”

I shrugged, giving her a blank stare when on the inside I was very suspicious.

“I felt it was time, and so did Marcus. This way my father and whoever can make their decisions as they see fit. I won’t have to deal with them and vice versa. It’s a win-win situation all around.”

I left her standing there while I talked to my clients. I knew her father and my father were up to something. I could smell it. Seeing how pissed Diane was confirmed I made the right decision.

As the night wound down, I noticed I hadn’t heard my phone go off at all. I thought that strange, and when I pulled it out I was fucking livid. I looked at her, not hiding my anger.

“Did you turn my fucking phone off?”

She looked around the table at the eyes that were facing us and said quietly.

“Perhaps we can talk about this later?”

“Don’t handle me, Diane. Answer my question.”

My voiced was raised slightly.

“Son, why don’t you lower your voice?” Someone at my table scolded.

I turned my gaze on them.

“Mind your fucking business.”

Diane quickly turned to me and said, “Look, it was going off over and over again. You looked exhausted, so I was trying to give you some rest.”

I stared at her, trying not to put my hands around her neck. When my phone finally came on, I had like fifty messages.
Oh shit.

My heart started racing as I saw my brother’s number for most of the messages. Then I saw two messages from Max. I played her message. The moment I heard the pain in her voice asking if I would call her, I was sent over the edge. I slammed my fist onto the table, knocking everyone’s glasses over. Diane’s demeanor finally cracked.

“What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Don’t touch anything that belongs to me again, understand?”

I stood, and that’s the moment where I saw my brother. I quickly went to his side as I dialed Max. She called me around 3 p.m. and then again around 5 p.m. Her voice sounded worse than the first message, and my heart was breaking. My brother saw me coming and headed to me. The pain that was all over him had me practically running toward him.

“What happened? Is Allura okay?” I called out.

Marc shook his head. “Man, I’ve been calling you all day. What the fuck?”

“Diane turned my fucking phone off.”

“Well, shit. Was her phone off too? I called her all day as well.”

I looked toward the table, glaring at her, and she turned her head away from me. ‘God, I could kill that woman.’

“What’s going on?” I asked him again.

Marc tried to get his breathing under control, but I was extremely impatient. I felt like I needed to get to Max now.

“Marcus, is it Max?”

He shook his head. “No, it’s Kat.”

“What do you mean, its Kat?” I had a sickening feeling wash over me.

“She died, Mason.”

“What?!”

Marc pulled me away from everyone in the room. I saw my father and Ryan rise from their chairs to head in our direction.

“I don’t know everything, okay? All I know is that her and Max were at home, and she simply collapsed. Max called the ambulance. But by the time they got to the hospital, Kat had died. They couldn’t revive her.”

Ryan got to us first and asked, “What’s going on here?”

“Go sit down. This doesn’t concern you.” I told him.

Ryan pointed his skinny finger at me. “You know, Mason, I’ve had about enough of your shit.”

“Is that so?”

I moved toward him. Clearly, it was time for him and me to talk, but my brother walked in front of me and backed me away. I turned, ran my hands through my hair, and closed my eyes. When we had some distance, I looked at Marc.

“Do they know what happened?”

I knew Maxine would be a mess.

“Not definitively, no. But they suspect it was a brain aneurysm.”

“Fuck!”

My father came out of the hall and walked toward us. “Is everything alright?” he asked, but we both ignored him.

“I have to go find her.”

“Mason, she’s not taking this too well. You need to find her quick, okay?” my brother warned.

Seeing the look in his eyes had me running to my car. I drove like a bat out of hell to get to her apartment. I was glad for the light traffic and the straight shot up the Dallas tollway to Addison.

This really can’t be happening. It seems that everyone she has loved has died, leaving the very people that fucked her over still remaining; including me.

When I got to her complex, I pulled through the gate and headed to her building. I parked and ran to the steps, only to see Cory coming out of her second-floor apartment. My anger rose at the sight of him. So what was that all about? Because she couldn’t get ahold of me, she called him? Cory saw me and exhaled.

“Man, I was just about to call you again.”

He looked me up and down, seeing my tux, but not saying anything else. I climbed the steps.

“How is she?”

“Fucked up. I’ve been calling and calling you.”

I nodded. “I know. My phone was shit.”

“Did your brother or AB get to you?”

I nodded again. “Yeah, my brother found me.”

I put my hand on his shoulder, realizing he had to be hurting too. Tiffany was his cousin.

“I’m sorry to hear about Kat. You and your family have my sympathies,” I said softly.

He simply nodded, and raked his hands over his head and down his face.

“I’m most worried about Max. I don’t know what to do about her.”

He pointed toward the closed apartment door.

“I mean, she won’t eat or sleep. Hell, she won’t even cry. She just lays there on her bed. The doctors wanted to keep her in the hospital when she went crazy on them, but I talked them out of it.” He moved closer to me.

“Kat died in her arms, Mason. They were sitting on the couch in there. One minute Kat was fine, and the next she wasn’t.”

I understood, so I just nodded. If anything good could come out of all the death I’d seen, it was that I would be able to help her. I knew how it felt to lose someone and be helpless to stop it.

“Is she still in her room?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay. Are you leaving?” I asked him.

“Yeah, I have some arrangements to get started. Now that you’re here, I should make my way to the funeral home.”

“Cory,” I called out as he headed down the steps. “If there is anything you need—and I mean anything—you know AB, Marcus, and I will handle it. No matter what, we’ll be there. Okay?”

He half smiled and nodded.

“Thanks, man. Most of all, just please take care of her,” he said, nodded toward the door of the apartment.

“I will.”

I walked into the silent apartment. I closed and locked the door. I removed my jacket and tie. I laid it on the couch and then headed to my left. I got to a bathroom, and I smelled Maxine’s scent all around the room. I started removing my cuff links, and I placed them in my pocket. I worked on the buttons of my shirt.

When I arrived in her room, I saw her curled up on top of her bed gripping a pillow for dear life. She didn’t move. I didn’t know if she heard me come in the room or even knew I was there.

I removed my shirt and laid it on a chair next to her bed. I removed my shoes. I crawled up next to her. I noticed her body start to shake as I got closer, and I kissed her shoulder.

I whispered, “I’m so sorry, baby.”

I wrapped my arm around her waist and pulled her into me. I kissed her head and used my other hand to smooth her hair. She turned her body around to face me, and she broke down. She screamed into my chest and shook uncontrollably. All I could do is wrap my arms around her and pull her on top of me as she cried in my chest. I rubbed her back and her hair and kissed her. I whispered that I was here and that I would take care of her over and over again.

We stayed like that for hours it felt like, but I didn’t care. I didn’t move. I closed my eyes with her and just lay there, holding her tight. Finally, she rose slightly and looked up at me through reddened swollen eyes.

My eyes were equally red and full of sadness. I caressed her face lightly and caressed her hair back from her face. She moved closer to me and planted a kiss on my lips. I helped her move further up my body, so she could kiss me easily if she wanted to. Never in my dreams did I think she would deepen the kiss. She put her hands on the side of my face and kissed me harder and with more need. I let her drive and just kept my hands on her lower back.

What set me ablaze was when she pulled back slightly and whispered, “Please, Mason. I need to feel you.”

I wasn’t sure what she meant, but I think my dick did. I tried to ignore the rising of the beast, and as she sat up, I pulled off her top. I pulled off my soaked tank style t-shirt, and she then started kissing me again. I sat up slightly, making her straddle me. I wasn’t sure what she truly wanted, and I didn’t want to assume. I moved my hands to her face and broke the kiss. I looked in her tear-stained face.

“What do you want me to do, baby?”

She started to cry again as she closed her eyes and leaned her forehead against mine.

She managed to whisper, “Please, just make the pain go away, even if it’s for a little while…Mason, please.”

I tilted her head back so I could look in her eyes. I wiped her tears from her face with my thumbs. When she opened her eyes to look at me, I kissed her.

She instantly wrapped her arms around me, trying desperately to make our body’s one. I began to kiss her as if, if I didn’t have her that moment, I would die.

She was my lifeline. I knew that, and God, my body showed it. I moved her under me and began to kiss her neck and collarbone. I reacquainted myself with the most heavenly body I had ever seen. I went back to kissing her lips. As I moved her to the side, I removed the clasp from her bra and yanked the material from her body. She gasped slightly, but I didn’t stop. I then went to one of my favorite places on her body. I caressed her breasts, and I placed one nipple in my mouth while I played with the other one in my hand.

I ravenously moved from one nipple to the other. I moved my tongue over each like an expert, biting slightly, knowing that’s what she liked. Feeling her back arch in response told me that I still could please her. She moaned my name, as I moved down further and kissed her stomach. I got to her shorts and pulled them off. I missed her so much as I looked her over. She was naked and beautiful, and I vowed make her mine again.
