Alex laughed and kissed her.

“Great idea, baby. Hey, you guys about to eat?”

Alex guided Teresa into the living room, probably to put Pandora on my television. When they were out of sight, I looked at Max. I wasn’t sure if she was feeling guilty or regret about what just happened. She smiled shyly at me and turned to check the food.

I sighed, “Do you have enough for our sudden guests?”

“Of course. Let them know dinner will be done in a few minutes.”

She didn’t look at me, so I knew regret was filling her head.

‘Damn you, Alex.’

Chapter 7
Maxine

As I look out on the Delaware River, I wonder what the hell I was thinking earlier. I wanted to see him. I’ve been thinking about him ever since I’d seen him almost a month ago. But it was heightened even more last night at The Bar when he held me. I wanted that feeling again of being in his arms. The thought of him kissing me was too overwhelming. So, like the whore that I am, I thought, ‘Hey, why not seduce him with food? I rolled my eyes and wiped a lone tear that started to fall.

I feel like an idiot. After our monumental lapse in judgment earlier, Mason pretty much stayed away from me. Alex and Tiny were a welcome sight in a way. I think, had they not come by, Mason and I probably would’ve made a huge mistake. And I would have messed up a good thing. I smiled through the now-constant flow of tears, thinking about the whole night. Alex and Mason were hilarious. They regaled Tiny and me about the crazy times they had in the Navy.

Alex told us how many times he purposefully got Mason into fights, just to watch his opponent underestimate him and then watch as Mason would destroy him. They talked about being on the SEAL team and even about some of the friends they lost. Alex ended up bringing liquor with him, so Tiny and I got drunk off of Peach Ciroc, and Alex and Mason drank Mason’s favorite seven hundred dollar bottle of Scotch.

I was lit by the end of the night. We really had a great time talking and joking around. Watching Alex and Tiny together made me long for closeness, but it seemed I was the only one. Ever since Alex and Tiny’s entrance into our two-person party, Mason barely looked at me. Hell, he barely touched me at all. It was nerve-racking to say the least. I mean here is a guy who, not more than a few hours ago, asked if he could taste more of me. Now, I may not be fully up on seductive talk but, damn it, I knew what that meant.

And now, it’s like he turned cold. I needed to get out of here and quick. Tiny helped me clean the kitchen. She, of course, asked me about him, but I shook my head. She obviously could tell they walked into something between Mason and me. But whatever that was had exited when they came in.

I was confused, and I told her so, but she told me not to give up.

“I feel like a whore, Tiny. I mean I just got out of a relationship, for Pete’s sake.”

“Well, I don’t know about Pete or his sake or who that is. But it’s clear that there is something going on between you two. And hell, Max, it’s been over between you and Trip for a long time. You were just too stubborn to notice.” She leaned into me and said softly, “Just hang in there. Let him make the first move, if it makes you feel better about this whole thing. But if he doesn’t, you take what’s yours.”

I laughed, and she continued, “You aren’t looking for a relationship, right?”

I shook my head.

“Okay then. This is just two people getting their freak on, satisfying something that clearly has been brewing for quite some time. I think once you release that feeling, you two could probably go on your merry way.”

I hugged her tight and finished putting the dishes in the dishwasher. Leftovers were split between Alex, who insisted that I cook every Sunday, and Mason. When they left, I couldn’t bring myself to wait around for Mason to make a move. I was going home. I excused myself and went to the bathroom to try and figure out how I could make my exit gracefully when my cell interrupted my pep talk.

“Hey Mimi, what’s up?” I said into my phone.

“Hey, girl. Where are you?

I hesitated before I answered, “Uh…I’m at Mason’s.”

I paused and waited for the sly comments, but they never came.

“Humph, good for you. So are you staying there?”

“Um no, Mimi. I’m making my exit strategy as we speak. It didn’t go quite the way I expected.”

“Oh shit. I’m sorry…Well, maybe you can find a place to crash tonight because, due to the weather, our electricity is out.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yup, Audrey called me and told me that we don’t have any lights or heat in our building. It looks like it’s out on our entire block. So, it makes no sense to go home. I called Tiny and left a message. But I think she’s staying with Alex tonight, so she had no plans of coming home anyway.”

Tiny’s been sleeping on our couch for a few days while her apartment was being painted.

“Yeah, I saw them today. They came by and had dinner with us.”

“What’s going on there, Max? Are you okay?”

I sighed deeply.

“I don’t know, Mimi. I truly have no clue. But I’ll figure something out. There’s a hotel close to him so…”

“No, Max. Why don’t you just stay there? Tell him your lights and heat are out in the apartment. Mason is a good guy. He’ll let you stay there.”

“I’m sure he would, Mimi. I just don’t feel comfortable, that’s all. I don’t know. I’ll figure out something, okay? Be careful while you’re out there. How bad is it?”

“Girl, they’re talking at least a foot of snow by morning.”

“Are you kidding me? The news never said it was going to be that bad.”

“I know. They ain’t worth a damn if you ask me. It’s like a sneak attack or something.”

I ended our call, telling her I would be careful. Then I went in search of my companion. Mason was sitting on his couch, watching the news. He sat up when he saw me enter the room.

“Hey, it seems like it’s getting bad out there.”

“Yeah, Mimi just called me. Apparently my apartment is without electricity, so that means no heat whatsoever.”

“Damn… is she home by herself?” he asked me.

I wanted to sit down next to him, but I didn’t want to stay here any longer than I should.

I shook my head.

“No, she’s probably out at her parents or something. Look…um…everything has been cleaned, and I started the dishwasher. I’m going to go and…”

He looked at me puzzled, “Go where? What do you mean?”

“Well, since I can’t go to my apartment, I need to find a place to stay. There’s a hotel…”

Mason stood frowning, “Why the hell would you go to a hotel, Max? You’re more than welcome to stay here. I mean…” he looked at me for a moment, I figured trying to get his thoughts together. He took a deep breath and looked down at the floor. “I have an extra bedroom you can use. I can give you something to sleep in, and I have plenty of food. You are more than welcome to stay here. As a matter of fact, I insist.”

“Mason, that’s nice of you but…”

His eyes shot up at mine.

“No buts, Maxine. Now, let me show you where the bedroom is, and you can get settled. Take a shower if you like. Whatever you need, okay?”

He walked past me and went to the front door. I watched him check the door and set the alarm before he signaled me to follow him up the stairs to the second floor. Tiny and I teased him earlier about the elevator he had in this place. But I was a bit disappointed we didn’t take it up to the second level. It would have been cool.

There wasn’t much to the second floor. He told me the door to the right was his. Then he walked past another seating area to another door. He opened the door and showed me the linen closet and the bathroom. He disappeared for a second and came back with a t-shirt and a pair of shorts to sleep in.

“There are toothbrushes in the drawer in there, as well as soap and anything else that you may need. Feel free to help yourself. Please, let me know if you need anything else. I’ll be right down the hall.”

He gave me a faint smile and left me. I showered and changed into only the t-shirt he gave me. I pulled out lotion from my purse and brushed my hair and teeth before I crawled into bed and began to cry. I felt crazy being here. We went from not being able to get enough of each other to hardly saying anything at all.

I tossed and turned. Then finally I gave up at about 3 a.m. I went downstairs to grab some water and found myself staring out into the dark water, trying to figure out how I’m going to face him in the morning. I sniffed and wiped my eyes, trying to keep the lump in my throat from choking me to death.

“You’ve definitely made a mess of this, Maxine.”

“Can’t sleep?”

I jumped at the sound of the deep voice coming from behind me. I looked over at him briefly and nodded. I turned back to face the window to hide my instant attraction to him. Holy hell, he looked mouthwatering good. He only wore pajama pants that hung low on his waist, revealing that infamous v-shaped muscle that leads to a place I want to follow so desperately with my tongue.

I’ve seen what he looks like without a shirt. But tonight it makes him seem even more desirable. Or maybe it’s the hiatus I’ve been on that’s making him look deliciously good.

“Hmmm.” I felt him walk up behind me, and I tensed. “How’s it looking out there?”

“Still snowing,” I said softly, trying not to betray the emotions I’m feeling.

Damn, he smells so good too. I could feel my heartbeat quicken, and I felt the goosebumps flood my body. It never fails. Every time he’s close to me or, hell, even in the same room with me, I feel like I can’t breathe. It’s like I needed him to touch me, or I would fall apart.

I couldn’t take this anymore. It’s clear he doesn’t want me the way I want him. Maybe as the night went on, he came to his senses. I turned, and without making eye contact, walked away from him. But I didn’t get far. I felt his arm go around my waist, and he pulled me back in front of him. My back was against the window, and I kept my eyes on his perfect pectorals.

“Maxine,” he said simply in a deep voice dripping with…Was it desire?

I wouldn’t look at him. I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I felt his hand travel up my arm, sending more chills through me. I shivered slightly as he continued his invasion up to my cheek. He ran his fingers along my jaw line to my chin, and he tilted my head to meet his eyes. I closed my eyes. I couldn’t bring myself to look into his face. I didn’t want to see regret or pity. I didn’t want him to have me in his arms because he felt guilty.

“No,” I said softly and tried to push away from him.

“Look at me.”

I shook my head.

“Look at me, angel,” he said more firmly, but still in that deep penetrating voice that made me wet with need.

I opened my eyes and looked into his. He lightly raked his thumb over my cheek.

“I couldn’t sleep either,” he said softly. “You being this close to me and not being able to touch you is driving me crazy. The feeling of your lips was everything I imagined it would be and more. I want more of you, Maxine. I’m tired of being a gentleman around you, trying to ignore the burning desire to touch you…to kiss you…to fuck you senseless.”

What? Is this really happening?

He touched my lips lightly with his tongue, and I saw him lick his lips hungrily. ‘Holy fuck. I think I just came on myself.’

He searched my eyes for confirmation. I knew I just couldn’t say anything. I was speechless.

Me
speechless.

There was only one thing I could do. I grabbed the bottom of the t-shirt I had on and pulled it up and over my head. I saw his eyes grow large, and he drank my nakedness slowly, again licking those beautiful full lips of his. I feel like if he doesn’t touch me soon, I will explode. I reached up and fisted his hair to bring him close to me as I went on my tippy toes to meet his lips full on. As his hands finally touched my body, I moaned in his mouth.

Our tongues expertly devoured each other with want and need we never realized we had for each other. He deepened his kiss and moaned when I pulled his hair tighter, trying to get closer to his body. Damn, I wanted him badly. I couldn’t contain myself.

He reached down and grabbed both butt cheeks, and I wrapped my legs around him tightly. I felt his hardness close to my…Oh God!!! He moved down to my neck, kissing it and biting. I instinctively grinded against him and found myself pushed up against the cold glass behind me.

“Fuck, baby. You feel so good. I bet you taste good too,” he said, while kissing my throat and traveling down my collarbone to my chest.

At that moment, I felt a shift from my ass to my thighs. What was he doing? Oh my.

I started climbing up the window as he took one of my breasts in his mouth and bit, sucked, and licked my nipple. He expertly lapped his tongue around and around, which drove me insane.

I moaned softly and called his name, which seemed to make him attack me more. He switched from one nipple to the other, while driving me out of my mind.

“I want to taste you, baby.”

“Uh-huh,” was all I could get out.

I was then hiked up more, and my legs were suddenly on his shoulders as he went right for the prize in between my legs.

“Oh fuck, Mason,” I cried out, panting and trying to control myself.

But I was losing miserably as his tongue licked my lips and around my clit. He moved my legs out wider, and he put his hands against the window so he could better get to me.

“Shit, baby. You taste amazing. Sweet as candy.”

Just hearing his voice was undoing me completely. I started to feel the buildup that ran from my toes up between my legs. I started to tense up, and he felt it.

“That’s right baby, come for me. Let me taste you.”
