“This
must be done as quickly as possible,” I said to Eligos and Vetis.

Both
of them agreed. Hecate and Elizabeth had rejoined us, both ready to fight.
Marley had assured them both that she and the three newbies would control the
others. I got ready to attack.

“Keira,
I swear to God if you touch them....” Tyler shouted.

The
demons themselves came at us first…the guys’ parents still stood there, grinning.
Eligos’s sword appeared a split second before the two that went to attack him
even got close, and both of them were decapitated. Vetis threw his arms out in
front of him, and a blast of what looked like yellow plasma flew out of him,
slamming into one of the assailants, who screamed in pain. I watched,
transfixed as its flesh seemed to melt. Hecate disappeared for a moment,
reappearing right behind one of them. She slammed her dagger into its back and
it dissolved into the air. Elizabeth muttered something, Latin I think, and two
of the demons rose from the ground. She muttered again, and both of them
started shaking violently. What can only be described as slime started pouring
from their mouths while blood trickled from their eyes and ears. She held them
there long enough for Eligos to slice them both in half, killing them. The two
remaining demons were mine. I waited for them to come closer before letting the
angel free for a split second, just long enough to send a stream of holy fire
at them. I stood watching them burn, writhing in agony, and I got a great
amount of pleasure from it. The fire would kill them…it would burn through
their very souls.

Now
came the part I was dreading. It was time to face the bodies of the guys’ parents.

Forgive me,” I whispered, hoping their spirits would be able to hear
me. I turned my attention to the bodies of Evelyn and Sofia. They must have
known they were my main weak spot…they found it hysterical. Hecate came over
and passed me a little dagger.

“This...this
will kill them,” she told me. “Do it quickly; don’t prolong your pain any
longer than is absolutely necessary.”

I
took it from her without saying a word. I just nodded my head and started
walking closer to them.

“Keira,
no!” Lucian almost screamed.

I
didn’t turn to face him…Marley, Olivia, and her brothers were managing to
contain them. But how were they controlling Danny? He was a demon after all. My
question was soon answered when I heard him shouting for Hecate to free him.
She’d trapped him, God knows how. It definitely wasn’t a demon trap—one of the guys
would have broken it by now so he could reach us. It had to be a powerful
spell.

When
I was only a few feet away from Evelyn, she smiled and spoke. “Keira, my dear,
how nice it is to see you.” Her voice sent shivers through my whole body…it was
exactly the same. Her smile, her body language, all how it used to be. “Surely
you don’t want to fight me, Keira,” she said, acting hurt.

“You...you
are NOT Evelyn,” I shouted. “Get out of her!”

“If
I leave this body, it will simply rot away,” she grinned. “Besides, it’s very
comfortable in here.”

As
soon as she’d finished speaking she attacked, throwing energy at me, forcing me
to stumble backwards. It hurt like hell. Whoever had bestowed her with power
had given her a lot. Sofia now stood in her place.

“Now,
now, Keira, show some respect,” she snarled.

She
held her hands out in front of her, and multiple energy balls came flying at
me, hitting me and sending me crashing to the ground. Normally, I would have
evaded all of them, but I was finding this very hard. I noticed Hecate and the
others fighting with the rest of them. The shells of Corey and Jason were
attacking Vetis, but they were no match for him and quickly realized it. They
tried to escape, but Vetis was too fast for them. I cringed as he quickly ran two
thin bladed swords through each of their ribcages. A hot pain shot through my
chest as I watched them evaporate. Vetis looked at me…he knew I’d seen it all.
He started to say something, but was interrupted when Michael attacked him.

Sofia
and Evelyn were laughing to themselves, then continued their attack. Everything
they threw at me hit me. I had to find strength…I had to keep telling myself
they weren’t who they once were.

“Keira,”
Eligos shouted. “Get up. Fight!”

I
could hear Lucian and the guys screaming out to us, pleading with us to stop…but
we couldn’t.

I
dragged myself to my feet, gripping the dagger Hecate had given me tightly.
Just as the women went to attack me again I made lightning from the raging storm
strike them both. Their screams of pain made me feel even more sick. I had to
move quickly…I needed this to be fast, to make it easier on my heart. I darted
over to them, so fast I startled them both.

“I’m
sorry, I’m sorry,” I sobbed before stabbing Sofia in her back. “Forgive me,” I
cried, pulling the dagger quickly from her now dissolving body and slamming it
into Evelyn’s chest. Tears ran down my cheeks as I watched her disappear in
front of me.

Lucian
and Tyler were shouting and crying. I turned and found Vetis and the others
watching me. They had taken care of the rest of the guys’ parents. Eligos
walked over to me and wrapped his arms around me, and I broke down in tears.

Chapter 22

Despair

Keira

Now
that the fight was over the guys were released. Hecate ended her spell on Danny
but stayed well away from him. His eyes were blood red…he was furious. Eligos
moved away from me, closer to Danny, ready to restrain him if necessary. Lucian
walked over to me, looking calm considering what he had just witnessed. However,
that changed as soon as he was in front of me. His eyes turned black and he
stuck me with the back of his arm, knocking me to the ground. He went for me
again, but Eligos was quicker. He gripped Lucian by the throat, lifting him
from the ground with ease, tightening his grip more and more until Lucian could
hardly breathe.

“Eligos!
Please don’t!” I begged.

Tyler
and the others tried to come over, but Vetis, Hecate, and Elizabeth blocked
their path.

“Try
it,” Vetis warned. “You’re no match for me.”

“Eligos,
you’re killing him; please let him go,” I begged again, getting to my feet and
placing my hand on his shoulder.

“If
you ever touch her again, I won’t care
who
begs for your life, I’ll kill
you. Do you understand me?” he snarled at a very red-faced Lucian.

Lucian
couldn’t respond in words; the sounds could not get past his throat, which
Eligos still clenched firmly. Lucian just nodded frantically, and Eligos let go
of him. He promptly fell to the ground, gasping for air. Eligos turned to face
the others.

“That
goes for any of you, too,” he warned. “Touch her, you die! You have no idea how
hard that was for her. We all understand who they were to
you,
but that
was only their shells. Your parents are together in Heaven. Remember that!”

“If
you turn against her now, you will be on your own with this,” Elizabeth
continued. “None of you want that, do you? That took a lot of her strength; she
did what
had
to be done. I understand what it’s like to lose people you
love; it’s hard and it hurts more than anything else in the world. But she is
not
the one who killed your families! If you want to be angry, be angry at their
true
killers.”

Nobody
spoke. The only sounds were the rain and people crying. It was becoming
unbearable. Eligos led me into the house and sat me down in the smaller living
room.

“Are
you okay?” he asked.

“I
will be,” I assured him. “Please don’t be mad at Lucian…I expected it, to be
honest.”

“I’m
sorry, I can’t help that. I know what just happened was horrendous, but
you’re
my concern, and I won’t allow anyone to hurt you.”

“I
know, but they were so...worried; no...shocked, hurt, and I suppose even
frightened.”

“I
know, but none of that was your fault. If you—
we
—hadn’t dealt with them,
the guys would be dead, or seriously hurt, and then—”

He
was interrupted by Danny walking into the room. Eligos tensed, obviously
expecting a fight.

“Keira,
I’m sorry for the things I shouted, and I’m sorry I didn’t fight with you. But
I just couldn’t,” he cried, walking slowly over to me.

I
went to him and hugged him.

“I’m
so sorry Danny,” I choked.

“I
know, so am I.”

“Hecate
did the right thing, containing me. If I’d done anything to hurt you I wouldn’t
have been able to forgive myself. Plus, Eligos would have probably killed me,”
he tried to smile.

I
heard Eligos laugh a little behind me. Danny was trying to put a brave face on
things; he wanted to toughen up, but sometimes you can do it too quickly.

After
a few minutes Hecate came and took him out. They decided they would go for a
walk so he could try and clear his head a little, maybe even let off some
stream. Either way, if he cracked, Hecate would be there to support him. The other
guys were all in their rooms; none of them wanted to talk, they wanted time
with their own thoughts, and I fully understood that. Eligos excused himself
for a while when he was summoned by Lilith. The rest of the gang were in the
living room talking amongst themselves. I told them I was going out for a
while, just for a bit of air, then left the house.

I
walked a mile or so down the road and sat down against one of the trees near
the open fields. My head felt like it was going to explode…shock, upset,
despair, all at once. Instead of calming down I was getting more and more
angry. I couldn’t get Evelyn’s and Sofia’s faces out of my mind.

“Where
are you, damn it? I know you can hear me!” I shouted, standing. “Come on, you
bastard!” I cursed, but still he didn’t come. “I swear if you do not get your
sorry ass here right now...!”

“You’ll
what?”

I
turned quickly to see Ballantine standing a few feet away from me. He attempted
to trap me in his little circle of light again, but this time he would fail. I
let the angel free and diminished the light before it got close to me. He
looked shocked…he wasn’t expecting that.

“How
did you do that?” he snarled.

“Watch
your mouth!” I shot back.

The
truth was I didn’t know how I’d done it. It was the angel that knew, but I wasn’t
going to tell
him
that.

“Why
did you do it?” I scolded.

“Do
what exactly?”

“You
know what!”

“Keira,
you’re not making any sense. Why don’t you tell me what’s pissed you off?”

He
genuinely looked clueless.

“Some
leader you are then,” I began. “You can’t even control your followers.”

“I
beg your pardon.”

“First
they destroy Salem,
apparently
without your knowledge; they kill my
friends’ families—”

“I
knew nothing about that, I’ve told you this already.”

“So
how about what happened tonight?”

“Until
you tell me what happened how am I supposed to answer?” he said, walking closer
to me.

“We
were attacked...in the sickest way possible.”

I
broke down in tears as I told him the night’s events. He looked genuinely
disgusted with it all. But then, was he just a good actor? Maybe he was a
master manipulator as well as a murdering bastard.

“Well,
I don’t quite know what to say to you,” he sighed once I’d finished. He paced
up and down a few feet in front of me, occasionally running his hands through
his hair. He seemed to be lost for words. “I couldn’t apologize enough; nothing
I say could ever make it go away. I can never take back what has happened.”

“Did
you even look into who had attacked Salem?”

“I
have…I admit, not as much as I should. I’ve been busy.”

“You—!”

“But
I promise you this, I won’t do anything else until I find out who did this,” he
seethed.

“I’ll
believe it when I see it.”

“You
will.”

“Ballantine,
if you don’t, I will tell everyone about our meetings, including Lucifer. I
will never listen to you again, not that I should anyway. And
I’ll
promise
you
something…I will come after you and I will bring you down,
whether I agree with your reasons for doing this or not. You will suffer
Ballantine, do you understand me?”

“You
agree?”

“Find
out who did this, and don’t talk to me until you do. Then bring them to me.
That’s not a lot to ask.”

He
didn’t speak, he just stared at me for a moment before nodding and
disappearing.

I
tried to contact Eligos the same way Lilith would, like an unspoken telepathy.
He told me he was at the house and asked me to join him. I couldn’t go back yet…I
couldn’t face the guys…so I told him I was going to see Unsere for a while in
Hell then I’d be back. He knew I’d be safe there, so he didn’t complain. He just
said he would remain at the house in case something else happened.
