EPILOGUE
Ellen and Cole were married one year later after a protracted period of dating and living together in the pits and jungles of Congo. They found a lot more artifacts – bangles, jars, necklaces, walking sticks – before they hit the mother lode: an entire ruin complex beneath the ground.
And what a ruin it was!
There were pillars and columns with glorious carvings. A temple to Diana, goddess of the hunt, with spectacular marble statuary. There were tombs and mosaic atriums. Tiles made from lapis lazuli. This was the shifter find of the century, akin to the discovery of King Tut’s tomb or Pompeii. This was an entire life’s work.
With the mother lode came the publications, the
press tours, the fame and the funding. More funding was poured in as the Smithsonian and the British Museum now wanted in on a share of the spoils. Everyone wanted to know how ‘the husband and wife team of Devereux and Moss’ did it.
As for Terry, she went to Canada and married her longtime boyfriend,
Billy, who was blissfully unaware of her flirtations with danger. She sold the house in America and forwarded half the proceeds to Ellen through a lawyer.
That was the last Ellen heard from her.
“Think you will forgive her one day?” Cole asked his wife as he put his arm around her.
They were staring into the sunset from the promontory of their dig.
It was a very huge dig now. The place crawled with researchers and interns and locals.
She placed her hand on her swelling belly. The baby inside kicked once and turned.
“I’ve already forgiven her,” Ellen said. “She’s family. The thing is . . . I’m not sure she has forgiven herself.”
Cole laid his hand on her belly.
“You have your family right here too,” he said.
They hugged, and his mouth sealed over hers.
Behind them, the sun framed their silhouettes against the sky, preserving their love as a memento.
