I have more important things to do, anyway.

Chapter Three

Declan calmed her down right away. By the end of the night, she was satisfied enough to not have the worry on her brain anymore. She knew that she was being jealous and she promised to buckle down for the rest of the week. Be on time, not challenge Wendy. It worked, for a while.

Brionna held her coffee tightly as she walked into Declan’s office one morning. He was sitting behind his desk, but his face was resting in his hands, his glasses sitting on the desk. Immediately, she knew that something was wrong.

“What’s going on?”

Declan raised his head. He sighed deeply before he rubbed his hands over his face. The man gestured to the chair in front of him. Once Brionna had set down, she could really see the stress on his face.

“What’s wrong?” She asked.

“I’m being put in front of the medical board. One of my patients filed a medical malpractice suit against  me.”

“Are you serious?”

“Yes. Apparently it’s possible that I made a mistake during surgery.”

Brionna hesitated. “Did you?”

The look that Declan gave her was deadly. “I don’t make mistakes in the operating room. The case was a very difficult one, the surgery extremely complicated. I did the best I could.”

“You lost the patient,” she said before she could stop her mouth from forming the words.

Declan swallowed hard. “Yes. I did.”

Brionna reached across the desk and placed her hand on his. “I’m sure it wasn’t your fault and they’ll see that too. You can only do so much.”

“I’m aware of that,” he mumbled, his voice a little more sharp than he’d intended. He sighed. “I’m sorry. I just wanted to let you know. I’m not allowed to see anymore patients until the decision is made, so Wendy’s taking over rounds.”

Bri nodded. She wasn’t sure what else she could say that would comfort him. The expression on his face was one that she hadn’t seen before. He looked beat down, tired, defeated. When she stood up, she leaned over the desk before pressed a kiss to his forehead.

“Everything will be okay,” she said softly.

Wendy walked in as she was leaving out. Brionna stood beside the door for a moment, trying to hear within, but it was impossible. Declan’s office door was thick, sound barely filtered through it with raised voices let alone quiet ones. She sighed before she went to join the others for rounds. It wasn’t long before Wendy met up with them.

“Today,” Wendy said, pushing a few stray strands of hair behind her ear, “we’ll be examining new cases. A few of them are fairly easy. Others, not so much. I’ll tell you who has what when we reach the room.”

Usually, that would have been enough to perk Bri up. Today, it only made her mildly curious. She walked with the rest of the group to their rooms. Wendy, it seemed, had saved the last case for Mack and Brionna. Bri was fairly sure that it would be an easy one since it was Wendy handing it out.

“Now,” she said before they went inside, “this is our hardest case. The symptoms are indicative of
several
illnesses. What should we do first?”

“Rule out the most common,” Mack said easily, “then move on to other possibilities.”

“Very good, Mack,” Wendy said with a smile. “Several illnesses have in fact already been ruled out and you’ll find those in the patient's notes within the file. Let’s go say hello.”

They walked into the room. A young man, no more than nineteen or twenty, was sitting up in bed. He was watching tv, his eyes glued to the screen. Next to him, there was a young girl who looked like she was still in high school.

“Doctor Wendy,” she said, pushing aside what Bri assumed was homework, “he’s doing a little better today. The tv seems to be distracting him.”

“That’s good news.” Wendy turned to the interns. “This is Amber. She’s Chris’ younger sister and an aspiring doctor. Amber, this is Mack and Brionna. They’re going to help me work on your brother’s case.”

“Nice to meet you,” she said with a smile.

“Here’s the rundown,” Wendy said after the introductions, “Chris is nineteen years old with an odd neurological condition. It only started six months ago. Chris started to display signs of depression, anxiety, withdrawal and his personality became more aggressive. Now, he has hypotonia and cerebellar ataxia. We need to move fast to diagnose and treat him. Understood.”

Brionna and Mack nodded as they wrote down quick notes. Bri glanced at the boy again. He almost reminded her of her brother. There was tiny ray of hope that if she cured this case, maybe she’d be one step closer in helping him as well.

“Thanks Amber, we’ll let Chris get some rest,” Brionna said.

The girl nodded before she turned her attention back to her homework. They left out of the room quietly. When they were back in the computer lab, she and Mack broke out their books and pulled up research. Of course, the symptoms brought up hundreds of different diagnosis. They would have to cross reference them with things that had already been ruled out before they could do anything else.

“My eyes are literally starting to cross,” Brionna groaned as she rubbed her hands over her eyes.

“Mine too,” Mack said, closing his book. “Break time? I could use food that wasn’t made in this cafeteria.”

Brionna laughed. “Me too. I’m going to make a stop and I’ll meet you at the diner across the street?”

“You read my mind.”

Brionna made the trip to Declan’s office. When she walked in, he was buried in a mountain of papers. She walked over to him slowly. Never before had she seen a single thing out of place in his office. If there was one thing she knew about Declan, it was how much of a control freak he was in his own space.

“Declan,” she said slowly, “are you okay?”

The man waved a hand at her as he peered at a file in his hands. “Fine.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes! Are you going to continue to ask me idiotic questions or can I get back to work?”

Brionna gazed at him for a moment. The expression on his face had been so full of anger that it made her pause for a moment. She nodded her head slowly.

“Whatever you want,” she said before she walked towards the door quickly.

“Brionna. Bri-”

She slammed the door. Hurrying down the hall, she pushed back the tears that threatened to spill. Anger coursed through her veins. She stalked across the street.

Mack was already sitting at a table when she plopped down beside him. She ordered food, a huge burger, slathered in grease with extra fries. Mack raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. He could tell that she was pissed off and the last thing he wanted to do was add to it, it seemed.

When their lunch was finished, they went back to work. They had to make rounds again, log their notes and then it was back to Chris’ case. Bri noticed there was a text from Declan, but she ignored it. Burying herself in her work had been the perfect solution to her problems more than once and she was doing it again.

That night, Declan didn’t try to call her. She was happy about it, or so she told herself. She knew that he was under a lot of stress, but she wanted to help him. The way he was acting, pushing her away, it was confusing and hurtful. She didn’t bother staying up late, but instead crawled into bed.

Confronting the next day wasn’t exactly an appetizing option, but she did. She did it for the next three days, not hearing a word from Declan. The anger that she felt at first, was quickly being replaced by the passion for her job until it became an obsession for her to figure out her case as soon as possible.

“You’re like obsessed,” Mack moaned, his head on the lunchroom table as she poured the books once more. “Did you secret lover piss you off?” He asked, glancing at her out of one eye.

Bri shrugged. “I just want to figure out what’s going on with this kid.”

“Why?”

“Well, let’s see, I think it’s because I’m a doctor,” she said rolling her eyes. “Not to mention the fact that what he might have could possibly be what my brother’s been suffering with for years…”

“Okay, okay. I get it. You have good reasons. It just seems like you’re holding something in. If you need to talk about it, you can talk to me. You know that right?”

The look of concern in his eyes made Brionna smile. “Thanks, Mack. Really. I’m okay though. Let’s get back to work.”

“You got it,” he said as he sat up and began going over the books with her.

As much as difficult cases usually enthralled Brionna, this one was frustrating her. No matter what tests they ran, everything came back negative. Even the biopsy had come back negative. It was getting to her that she couldn’t seem to solve the problem.

At first, she’d been surprised when Wendy had given them the hardest case, now she understood why the woman had done it. It wasn’t to challenge, but to humiliate her when she couldn’t come up with the answer. Brionna was really coming to dislike the woman. Everything that she did seemed to come with some ulterior motive.

It was well into the evening by the time Brionna called it quits. Mack was happy to be leaving, the bags under his eyes noticeable. Both of them looked run down, even more so than usual. Wendy had given them some help, but mostly, she’d let them go on their own. Brionna felt like they were drowning, badly.

“I’m so exhausted,” Mack yawned. “I think I’m going to grab some beers and head home. Want to join me?”

“I can’t. I’m going to study some more tonight.”

“Don’t wear yourself out too much,” Mack said as he held the door to the lab open for her, “you don’t want to get sick.”

“I won’t,” she said with a small smile.

“I hope my roommate’s home. I left my keys again,” Mack mumbled as he dug through his pockets. “Or maybe Jacob took them again.”

“What did you say?”

“Oh, Jacob. One of my roommates always takes my keys.”

“Wait,” Brionna said slowly, holding up a hand. She bit her lip. There was something forming just out of reach before she snapped her fingers. “I’m so blind!” She moaned as she walked through the hospital.

“Where are we going?”

“To find Wendy. I figured out what’s wrong with our patient.”

“Wait a minute,” he said. “Would you
please
explain it to this time.”

Brionna laughed. “Sorry. It’s Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease. At least, I’m pretty damn sure that’s what it is. It’s
extremely
rare and most people don’t get it until their fifties and sixties.”

“I read about that,” Mack said excitedly, “you can find it by testing the s100 levels in the blood!”

“Exactly!”

Mack held up a hand. They high-fived before they walked into Wendy’s office. She was on a call and held up a finger until she was done.

“What can I help you two with?”

“We solved Chris’ case,” Mack said.

“Really?” Wendy asked as she laced her fingers together.

“It’s CJD. We can test the s100 levels to find it.”

“Good job you two,” Wendy said with a smile. “I knew you were both capable. Chris does in fact have CJD. I only found out a while ago. Good job.”

Chapter Four

Brionna wanted to murder Wendy, but Mack explained to her all of the ways in which that would be frowned upon. Instead, she settled for a pitcher of beer at the bar. She and Mack knocked their glasses together and chugged the frothy beer.

“Why didn’t she just tell us she knew what was wrong?”

“She’s kind of a bitch,” Mack said laughing,” but I think she just wanted us to learn. Hey, we still figured it out. Did you call your mom yet?”

Bri shook her head. “Not yet. It’s late where she is. She wouldn’t appreciate being woken up.”

Mack laughed. “Fair enough. Let’s get some wings too.”

Both of them ate too much food and drank too much beer. By the time they were done, neither of them were any good to drive. They took a taxi back to her place.

“Thanks for the beer,” she mumbled as she flicked on the living room light.

“Thanks for the wings. Shit!” Mack had stumbled into the coffee table.

Brionna laughed as he sank onto the couch. He clumsily kicked off his shoes before he turned to her. She was kicking her shoes off against the wall as he flipped on the tv.

“Bri?”

“Hmm?”

“Why don’t we go out some time?”

Brionna smiled. “I wish I could, Mack. You’re really awesome, but I can’t. I’m seeing someone.”

Mack grinned. “I was right about the secret boyfriend! Are you still mad at him?”

“No,” she said sadly, “just hurt.”

Mack pushed himself up on one elbow. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you talk about it.”

“It’s okay,” she said shaking her head.

“Trust me,” he said sinking back onto the couch, “if he’s smart, he’ll fix things soon.”

Brionna wondered if that was true. Would Declan fix things soon? She told Mack goodnight before she climbed into her bed. Wrapped up in the blankets, she wondered when he was going to say anything. He’d tried to text a few times, but she’d been too angry to deal with him. Now, she missed him. Lying there along, Brionna realized how much she craved his touch, his kiss on her neck. Eventually, the beer won out and she thought of nothing as she slept.

The next morning started with a splitting headache. Brionna rolled out of bed, groaning. She turned off her alarm before throwing her phone back on the bed. Walking out to the living room she could see Mack still sprawled out on the couch, snoring.

“Wake up,” she said, shaking him lightly, “time to go save lives.”

Mack grumbled. “Didn’t we just do that yesterday?”

“Where’s your sense of responsibility?”

“At the bottom of that last pitcher of beer.”

“Fair enough. I’m going to take a shower,” she mumbled as she padded to the bathroom.

The water was like heaven as it washed over her ebony skin. She sighed, rubbed the back of her stiff neck with her fingers. Declan popped into her mind right away. It was the day of his meeting with the board. She closed her eyes, said a little prayer before she continued her shower.

When she was done, Mack took her place. They picked up breakfast on the way, sugary sweet donuts and large cups of coffee. Everyone was gathered around in the computer lab as they went over notes logged from the night before on their patients.

“Look,” Brionna pointed at the screen, “Chris does have CJD. They’re going to start therapy and treating him.”

Mack smiled as he laid a hand on her back. “You did it again, Bri.”

“We did it,” she said with a grin.

They started rounds as usual. Brionna tried to pay attention, but she was nervous. She wanted to know how Declan’s meeting was going. By the time they were finished, she’d locked herself between she didn’t care and she was worried to death.

“Brionna,” Wendy said, waving  her over, “Declan wants to see you in his office.”

Bri nodded. She tried to keep the excitement from her face as she walked to his office. When she walked in, his tie was off, sleeves rolled up as he straightened up his office.

“You wanted to see me?”

Declan looked up. Immediately, she could see the relief on his face. He walked over to her, wrapped his arms around her body. The part of her that wanted to fight quickly faded. It felt good to be in his arms again.

“They dropped it,” Declan said excitedly, “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

“You never do anything wrong. Remember?”

Declan pulled back. “I did though. I shouldn’t have pushed you away. I’m sorry that I did that. This career that I’ve built, it’s all I’ve had for so long that it’s all I can focus on sometimes.”

Brionna nodded. She tried to glance away, but he brought her gaze back with a soft, but firm hand. The look in his eyes held her.

“It
was
all I had. Now, I have you. I don’t want to lose you, Bri. Can you forgive me?”

Brionna gazed at him. The look in his eyes was sincere, truthful. Slowly, she nodded her head.

“I can forgive you. Don’t ever push me away again though. Okay?”

“I’m not making any promises. I don’t want to lie to you, but I will try my hardest to talk to you in the future.  Okay?”

Brionna nodded. “Okay,” she said with a small smile. “I missed you.”

Declan took her into his arms again. “I missed you too. Let me make it up to you.”

“Dinner?” She asked.

“Something better. Then, we’ll have dinner later.”

Brionna’s stomach felt that old wave of anticipation. “What are we going to do?”

“Meet me here after your shift. I’m going to show you something.”

Declan pressed a kiss to her mouth, her lips parting to let in his tongue. When he pulled back, she left, slowly. The next few hours were a challenge as she tried to focus on her job. She couldn’t stop wondering what the man had planned for them.

When her shift was over, Brionna all but jogged to his office. When she was inside, he didn’t say a word. He grabbed her hand, led her down the corridors in silence.

“Where are we going?” She asked nervously.

“You’ll see,” he said with a smile on his lips.

They emerged in a hospital room that wasn’t being used. Inside, there was a bed, and a table full of instruments. Declan led her over to the bed.

“Climb up and take off your clothes. Don’t worry, I cleaned everything already,” he said with a laugh.

Brionna grinned as she shimmied out of her clothes. Naked, he leaned her back against the sheets of the bed. He picked up the straps on either side and buckled her down. The bindings were tight, but not so tight that they dug into her skin. She couldn’t move though.

“What are you doing?” She asked in an excited pant.

“Giving you an examination,” he said in a professional voice.

Declan knew it was one of her fantasies and he was making it come true. He slipped on a pair of latex gloves. Brionna’s pussy twitched. He ran his hands over her breasts lightly.

“First, I’ll examine the breasts,” he said in a husky voice.

Brionna’s breath caught in her throat. His hands ran over her skin, gripped her flesh before he released her again. She moaned as his fingers ran over her nipples. He caressed them, pulled them, twisted them lightly. Bri wanted to write against the bed, but she was bound tight.

“Everything seems to be okay,” he said when he was done. “I’m going to continue the exam.”

Declan’s hands ran down her body. When he got to her mound, he stroked her lightly before his fingers dove inside of her. She moaned, unable to control herself and he prodded  her with his fingers. Her legs were trembling, her pussy clenching his fingers tightly as she tried to milk every drop of pleasure from their intrusion.

“Declan,” she pleaded.

“That’s doctor to you,” he said with a grin.

“Doctor,” she said, feeling her entire body blush, “can you please...you know.”

“I’m  sorry. I don’t know,” he slipped in a third finger and hooked it, stroking his fingers against her g-spot.

“Can you please fuck me?” Bri cried out.

“Oh, with pleasure.”

Brionna shivered. She whimpered. The only thought running through her head was how badly she needed him. How badly she wanted him inside of her.

“Doctor, please help me.”

Declan released the straps that bound her. He reached down, unzipped his pants releasing his throbbing cock. Bri moaned in anticipation. He climbed on top of her easily and slipped inside of her in one fluid motion.

Brionna gasped. He gripped the top of the bed as he thrust into her. Her legs wrapped around his waist as he drove into her over and over. She threw her head back, arched her back as he fucked her.

Declan leaned back, gripped her legs. He pushed them up, making her squeal. She was tighter around him now and could feel every vein and throb of his cock. Declan wasn’t being gentle, he was giving every bit of himself that he had to give until she was crying out, gripping the sheet.

“Ask me,” he growled down at her, reading her expression effortlessly.

“May I please cum? Please, please let me cum!”

Declan grinned. “Good girl.”

Still, he didn’t let her cum. He teased her, thrust harder until it took all of her effort to concentrate on not orgasming. Her pussy clenched him tighter until he was panting. Brionna gasped as his hand curled around her throat.

“Please, sir! Please, let me cum!”

“There we go,” he said as he moaned. “Cum for me.”

It was always his words, his words that could seep into her mind and control her body. She moaned as the orgasm washed over her,  one wave after another. He groaned, his cock twitched within her as he came. Bri moaned, the feeling that took over her also exhausted her.

Declan didn’t slip out of her right away, but stayed nestled within her body. He leaned in. As his mouth captured hers, his tongue slipping into hers, she shuddered. When he pulled back, she was smiling.

“Was it that good?” He teased.

Brionna laughed. “No, it was horrible.”

Declan pinched her thigh lightly, making her laugh. He pushed her back down when she tried to sit up. He came back with a towel. Once he’d cleaned her up, he helped her get back into her clothes.

“I hope you’re hungry. I know the perfect place to go for dinner,” Declan said with a big grin.

“Really good food?”

“Something like that,” he said with a wink.

“What does that mean? Declan, what does that mean?”

The mischievous look on his face was saying more than he ever could. He started to leave the room and she followed behind him. Her hand slipped into his. Declan gave it a squeeze. The smile on his face made her want to melt all over again.

“Don’t you trust me?” He asked as they headed back to the main hospital.

“I let you strap me to a bed, didn’t I?”
