Chapter One

Paige Merrilyn had never been to a place like Lilith’s Playground. As if the freaking hot owners weren’t enough eye candy, the first night she arrived they were having a forties-themed party, complete with torch singers and band members dressed in white tuxes. How could she have lived less than ninety miles from this resort for thirty years and not known of its existence until three months ago?

She only wished her two best friends Anastasia and Kim—whom everyone called Stasia and Kimber—had come along. After much prodding and begging from Paige, both had declined. Paige smoothed the skirt of her black satin party dress, not caring that it looked more like 2012 than 1940. If she’d known they were having a costume party, she would have brought along something more appropriate, so this would simply have to do.

She spotted Gregory Fallon, one of the owners, dancing with a woman who looked bored. Paige had spent a couple of hours earlier that day chatting in the lobby with the green-eyed hunk and two other women whose names she couldn’t recall. With his jet-black hair and feline eyes, Gregory reminded Paige of a jungle cat, ready to pounce, but his dance partner obviously wasn’t enchanted. Her gaze traveled to the other couples, the band, and everywhere except toward Gregory.

Paige drained her glass of champagne and sidled up to them on the dance floor, insinuating herself between Miss Roving Glance and Gregory. His molten grin and knowing eyes sent her blood racing. “I’m cutting in.” She took Gregory’s hand and led him away from the other woman.

“I like a woman who takes charge,” he said, twirling her in expert fashion. “She wasn’t exactly having fun with me.”

“I noticed.”

Gregory’s grin widened. “Where are your two friends tonight?”

“They’re not my friends. I only joined your conversation with them earlier so I could meet you.”

Gregory’s gaze traveled over her dress. “Not exactly forties, is it?”

“Not even close.”

“I’m glad that didn’t stop you from coming tonight.”

“A party is a party, right?”

The band launched into a slow number, and Paige pressed closer to his body, lightly touching the back of his neck with one hand while he took the other to lead her in a foxtrot. She wasn’t a huge fan of forties music, but the band and singer were excellent. Everything about this place so far was over-the-top.

The scent of ginger floated past her nose. Was it coming from the
hors d’oeuvres? She hadn’t tasted any of the food yet, but now the smell was making her hungry.

“So, are you a fan of this forties shit?”

Paige laughed. “No, not really.” She looked into his handsome face. “Are you?”

Gregory’s body felt hard and lean pressed up against hers, and she sighed. Gorgeous
and
a sense of humor. This vacation had been a great idea. She hadn’t been able to find much about the place online, but that’s exactly why she’d wanted to come. Paige couldn’t pass up a party or an intriguing mystery.

“I’m not a fan either, but then this themed party wasn’t my idea.”

“Whose idea was it?”

“A couple of the other owners wanted to have a tribute to a singer that used to work here during World War II, when this room was a nightclub.”

“Oh, I see. There are six of you, right? Owners, I mean.”

“That’s right.”

“The rumor is you’re all cousins.”

Gregory’s laugh was easy and quick. Paige loved the way his eyes lit up with mischief. This man was trouble, and she’d always been attracted to trouble. “I love the way you said ‘rumor’ as if owning a resort with your cousins is a scandalous thing.”

“Well, there are other rumors.”

“Really? Tell me what you’ve heard.” When Gregory pulled away to look into her eyes, Paige’s breath caught in her throat. She was seized with the temptation to ask him where he’d stashed his wife or girlfriend for the evening. How was this man still unattached?

Paige glanced around. This wasn’t the place to talk about what she’d found online. “Not here or now. Let’s talk later.”

“Later?”

“Yeah, you know. After the party is over.” She looked directly into his eyes. “Unless you have other plans.”

His grin made Paige’s panties flood. “I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do, Paige.”

She snuggled closer to his body for the remainder of the song. If he was embarrassed about having a raging hard-on, he didn’t show it. She’d always preferred confident, direct men. Kimber and Stasia would seethe with jealousy when she told them what they’d missed tonight.

They’d just begun to dance to another fast tune when Gregory stopped moving and frowned. Paige followed his gaze to a man with big blue eyes rapidly approaching them. He looked terrified. The man leaned close to Gregory’s ear. Paige couldn’t quite hear what he said but caught the words “get in touch with.”

With barely an apologetic glance, Gregory walked away with the man. Paige stared after them, openmouthed, as they sprinted toward the doors leading to the hallway. “How rude,” she said out loud.

She made her way toward the bar and asked for a glass of whiskey. As she perched on a bar stool and sipped it, she tried not to think about how dry her sex life had been since she’d dumped Phil. Two years was a long time without a stable relationship. There was only so much a girl could do on her own, and the casual dating scene had always left her feeling disconnected.

Paige missed having someone to care about and spend time with outside the bedroom. Not that she’d come here expecting to find that, but she’d never been left alone on a dance floor. Not once. It was simply rude behavior.

“Would you care to dance?”

She whirled around at the deep, sexy voice to look into eyes the color of a sunset. Thick, dark hair spilled over his forehead. She had to dig her nails into her palm to keep her hand still because all she could think about was running her fingers through those locks.

“I’m not sure,” she said. “The last man who asked me to dance tonight just left me standing there.”

The corners of his full mouth turned up. “I find that difficult to believe.” He stuck out his hand. “Demetrius Neville. I’m one of the owners here.”

She shook his hand, and a jolt of electricity shot up her arm and straight to her clit, which began to throb. “I was just dancing with one of your cousins, Gregory Fallon. I’m Paige Merrilyn.”

“Is Gregory the man who left you on the dance floor all alone?”

“One and the same. I hope you can understand my reluctance to find myself in that position again.”

Demetrius leaned close, and Paige caught a whiff of pumpkin pie. She definitely needed to check out the food at this party.

“I’m not going to leave you alone tonight, Paige. Not unless you want me to.”

Paige couldn’t tear her gaze away from his eyes. They were the most unusual color she’d ever seen. Green and gold at the same time, they contrasted perfectly with his olive-toned skin. It was as if they’d been custom made for him alone. She studied the rest of his face, from the tiny cleft in his chin to his generous mouth. His features were different from Gregory’s, but no less captivating. Were all the owners this gorgeous and charming?
