Declan laughed. “That’s very true. Okay,” he said kissing her cheek when they were back in the hallway, “so trust me. We’re going to have fun.”
Bri swallowed thickly. “What

Prologue
7 Years Ago, Christmas Night
Sienna lay outside staring up at the cloudless night, full of stars, with her best friend Ryder. They had just stuffed themselves full of candied Christmas ham, mashed potatoes, cornbread dressing and too many other dishes to think about without falling into a food coma. Ryder had snuck a bottle of Irish whiskey to keep them warm so they were tipsy and staring at the stars.
They lay in the bed of Ryder’s pickup, close but not
too
close, mostly in silence thinking about their friendship, the future and this year’s failed relationships. “Aren’t you sick of it Ryder?”
Ryder turned his glassy grey blue eyes to his beautiful best friend. “Sick of what?”
“Relationships.” Sienna was sick to death of the way her last few relationships had ended. Not that they
had
ended, but two cheaters and thief definitely classified as a bad track record.
He nodded but kept his gaze trained on one of the dippers in the sky. He never could tell which was little and which was big. “I’m sick of bad relationships. Sick of girls needing too much time and attention and I’m sick of the drama.” He released a sigh and sat up for another swig of whiskey. “Why, are you?”
Sienna pushed herself to a sitting position and pushed a few black curls out of her face. “I’m more than sick of Ryder. I’m done. With all of it.” Her arms flailed with every word, a testament that she was slightly more than tipsy. “I’m going on a dating hiatus for a while, maybe until my gallery is open.” That would be years and her eyes closed while she waited for Ryder to tell her she didn’t need a dating hiatus because he was ready for her. For them. Of course he didn’t because Ryder was completely unaware of her recently discovered romantic feelings for him.
Ryder released a long breath and took another swig. He nodded his agreement but kicked himself for not telling her how he felt about her. It was the perfect opening but his brain sent a different combination of words to his mouth. “If we’re still stuck in this rut seven years from now, we should get married.” He closed his eyes against the rejection he knew was coming. It never came.
Sienna’s heart took a few beats off and then began to race. She couldn’t have heard what she thought she’d heard, what she’d wanted to hear him say for at least the past eighteen months. “What did you say?” She needed clarification before she laid her heart out for him to shatter.
This time Ryder’s swig from the bottle was longer. A lot longer. Maybe he made a mistake in reading the situation. “I said I think that if we’re both still single when we hit 30, we should get married.” There it was said. Again. He waited. And waited.
She gasped, trying hard to hide the smile on her face. “Really?” He nodded with a shy smile and her smile matched his. “Okay. Deal.” She stuck her hand out to shake on it like they’d shaken on every deal they’d ever made since they were eight years old.
Ryder pulled her into an awkward hug in the bed of his truck and took a moment to inhale her scent. It was bergamot and sandalwood and something else, but mostly it was incredibly intoxicating. He squeezed until her plump breasts were pressed against his chest but he pulled back as his body began to respond to her. He tried to huff out a laugh but it didn’t quite work. “God how sad would it be if we were both still single,
perpetually
single, when we’re 30 years old?”
Sienna sighed when he pulled back but his words, well they were like a bucket of ice old water being splashed over her on this cold snowy night. Personally she didn’t think it was sad at all. She
hoped
they were both completely unlucky in love for the next seven years. Then, Ryder Carson would finally be hers.
