Faux fur to neoprene, man,

Fake pearls to diamond rings, man,

I’ve worn it I’ve done my thing, man,

I’ve worn everything.

Acknowledgments

Without the following people, this book could not have been written:

Carolyn Rosenfeld, who took dictation, did research, and held my hand.

Ken Levitan, who dared me to try.

Stokes Howell, who told the truth.

Myra Friedman, who listened.

Robin Bergland & Brad Nolen, and Liz Lambert & Amy Cook, who offered refuge.

Jack Rovner and Lisa Arzt, who cheered me on.

Grace Suh, who pulled it all together.

And to my sister.

Also deep thanks to David Mirkin; Julie Speed; Fran Christina; Lynn Spillar; Norman Sussman; Davis, Grace, and Franny McLarty; Kay Shapiro; Kay Morris; Page VanHoy; Vanessa Walters; Annie Alberino; Rosie Cusack; everyone at Vector New York; MaryAnn McCready, Kristin Braaksma, and everyone at FBMM; Mary Ellen O’Neill; David Vigliano; Deborah Triesman; Fred Bohlander and everyone at Paradigm; Living Now; San Miguel De Allende; Kamalame Cay; Nantucket; El Cosmico; the Saint Cecilia; and the McKnight Ranch in Marfa.

To every bit of music I’ve ever loved, to every player who’s ever moved me, to every audience member who’s ever come to hear me, to every venue that has ever hosted me, my profound gratitude.
