How soon can you expect to see an improvement? When should you contact the doctor if there is no improvement?

When can the medication be discontinued? Do you need to complete the full prescription?

Most pharmacists now provide an information sheet that answers at least some of these questions. When you pick up the prescription, check the label and any other information you are given, such as a manufacturer’s package insert. If any of the following aren’t answered in the materials, get the answers from the pharmacist.

What is the generic name of the drug? Its brand name, if any?

What is it supposed to do?

What is the appropriate dose for your toddler?

How often should the medication be given? Should your child be awakened in the middle of the night for it?

Can it be given with milk, juice, or other liquids? Does it interact negatively with any foods?

Should it be given before, with, or after meals?

What common side effects may be expected?

What possible adverse reactions could occur? Which should be reported to the doctor?

Could the medication have an undesirable effect on any chronic medical condition your child has?

If your child is taking any other medication (prescription or over-the-counter), could there be an adverse interaction?

Is the prescription renewable?

What is the shelf life of the medication? If any is left, can it be used again at a later date if the doctor advises use of the same medication?
