LEON

Chapter 1

She never thought she’d have to be here again. Back living with her parents in this podunk, cow-shit smelling town.

Alia left home when she was only eighteen, the very day after she graduated from high school she was gone.

Not because of any sort of problem at home, her childhood was happy and healthy, her parents love her to death and her friendships were something she’ll treasure forever, but because there’s nothing here for her. There’s nothing here for anyone.

She didn’t want to be another small town single mom with a part time job working the cash register at the grocery store. She wanted much more than this smelly little town could offer her.

  And she never looked back.

Alia spent the last nine years living it up in the big city, working as a secretary for a legal firm. Hell, she was even in one of their commercials- an official star of local TV.

Maybe answering phones and sending faxes wasn’t the most prestigious job in the world, but nothing can ever compare to the feeling you get when you’re clicking your heels down the sidewalk with your coffee in hand as you swerve your way through the chaos of the big city.

Not to mention it’s nice to have a night life. Imagine living in a place where the only thing open past eight o’clock on a Friday night is your father’s bar and the only people who frequent a small town bar are small town drunks.

  Things were great for her.

That is, until her boss was caught for evading taxes and tax fraud, the firm closed down and she was out a job.

It’s surprisingly hard to pay big city rent when you don’t have a big city job to go along with it.

  So now she’s back.

She could avoid Easters and get by with a card on Christmas. She pushed it off for nine long years, but small town life finally sucked her back in. The universe forced her back to this piece of shit town.

Alia pinches the bridge of her nose, massaging between her eyes as she tosses her clean laundry on her bed before rifling through it for a fresh pair of socks.

At the very least, she grateful for no more early mornings.

She slides the socks over her feet, wiggling her toes in place before getting up from her bed and walking over to her dresser before pulling it open and pulling out an old pair of faded jeans.

She slips into them, pulling them up over her hips before fumbling with the button as she lazily walks back over to her bed.

Alia pulls her bra from out of the pile before plucking off the pair of panties stuck to the hook and wrapping the band around her chest to secure before sliding her arms into the straps.

She picks up her freshly washed black t-shirt and pulls it over her head and poking her arms through before pulling it down her waist.

Alia smooths her hands over her chest, pushing them over her stomach as she straightens out the large, circular, orange and white
BUDZ SHACK
logo.

She quickly bends over at the waist, tossing her messy dark brown locks forward before grabbing them and twisting them together on the top of her head, securing her hair in place with the elastic band from around her wrist before she makes her way over to the hook behind the door and pulls her bag off of it.

She stuffs another, plain, shirt inside of it to change into after her shift before walking over to the desk in the corner of the room by the window and pulling her grey, zip up hoodie off the back of the cheap wooden desk chair.

Alia sighs as she walks back across the room and over to her bedroom door before taking one last look around for anything she’s missed.

She shakes her head, flicking off the light and shutting her bedroom door behind her before walking down the hallway to the bathroom.

Well, at least that used to be her bedroom door. Her mom desperately wanted to keep her old room intact, but when Alia moved out she begged her parents to get rid of it. It took a while, but eventually they transformed her old bedroom into a plain and unassuming guest room. It looks nothing like it did before and thank God for that. The last thing Alia would want to come home to is a reminder that this is, in fact, the bedroom she grew up in and she is, in fact, back in this old town.

She steps into the bathroom, sliding her socks over the tile floor and dropping her bag on the counter before quickly turning on the hot water tap, letting the water run over her finger as it heats up before she splashes a little on her face, wiping it all over with the tips of her fingers.

She reaches blindly behind her for her towel before pulling it off the rack and pressing it against her face.

“Alright…” She sighs into the towel, resting her head in her hands as she hesitates to carry on with her day. “Let’s do this.”

She hangs the towel back on the rack before reaching for the bottle of mouthwash on the counter. Alia twists off the lid before bringing it up to her mouth and taking a large swig. She swishes it around before spitting it into the sink as it begins to burn her mouth.

“Dad!?” She calls as she picks up her bag and wanders back down the hall and into the living room.

She finds her father in the living room, his feet up on the coffee table in front of the sofa, the remote control in his hand.

“Dad, I’m heading out now… Anything you need to tell me before I go?” She asks as she rifles through her bag, double checking that she has her keys.

“Should be smooth for ya.” Her dad says, turning his head to look at her from across the living room. “Jason’s going to be cooking alone tonight, so don’t let him take too many breaks, that kid is always on a break, I swear.”

“Yeah, okay, okay, no extra breaks.” She whispers under her breath as she walks towards the front door before slipping her socked feet into her sneakers. “Got it.”

“And Alia…” Her dad says as he watches her reach for the front doorknob.

“Yeah, dad?” She asks, sighing out slightly annoyed.

“I’m glad you’re back home, you know.” He says before turning back to the TV.

Alia smiles softly as she shakes her head slightly from side to side.

“Yeah…” She says as she opens the front door before stepping outside. “Thanks, dad. Hopefully soon I’ll be glad, too.”

Chapter 2

Alia huffs, wiping the back of her hand against her forehead as she drops off a shallow grey tub full of empty glasses on the stainless steel counter beside the back sink.

“Jason?” She says, peeking her head outside the back door before spotting the cook as he sits on a blue bread crate with a smoke in his mouth. “I need two orders of chicken wings, come on, man. Then after you can close up the kitchen, I promise.”

“Yeah, yeah.” He says, taking one last drag before standing up from his crate. “They’re already thawing in the microwave.”

“My dad said I’m not supposed to let you have so many breaks.” She says, walking out into the alley.

“Your dad’s not here, is he?” Jason says, smirking at her as he winks his eye. “Besides, I was finished work and had this kitchen spotless fifteen minutes ago…”

“No, I guess he’s not.” She says, taking in a deep breath of the fresh midnight air before following the cook back inside the kitchen.

“You’ve got people waiting.” Jason says, pointing to the cut out window between the kitchen and the bar. “Tell ‘em the kitchen’s closed, Alia, I’m not dirtying more dishes for another order of wings.”

She nods her head as she hurries out of the kitchen, pushing open the grey double doors beside the bar before stepping behind the dark, walnut bar.

“What can I get for you gentlemen?” She asks, sliding her hands across the smooth bar top as she leans in to hear.

“Yeah, let me get…” One of the men says, scratching his finger tips inside of his long, brown beard. “You still got that honey garlic sauce here?”

“Oh, yeah.” Alia says, nodding her head. “But I just wanna let you know, the kitchen is closed for the night, so I can’t get you any food besides peanuts or pretzels.” She says, pulling a basket of pretzels up from the shelf under the bar.

“Pretzels?” The other guy says, pulling his face back as he kinks his neck.

“That’s what we got.” She says, shrugging her shoulders. “But the bar’s still open for another forty five minutes, so I can get you anything you want here.”

“Just get me a beer then…” The bearded man says, leaning with his elbow on the bar as he looks around the dark bar.

“Same for you?” Alia asks, watching the other man nod his head up and down as she pulls two beers out of the cooler before grabbing the bottle opener and popping off the tops.

“Here you go.” She says, setting them down in front of the men before sliding their bills off the counter.

She walks over to the register, clicking her fingers against the keys as she rings them up before sliding the cash into the register door.

“Hey!” She hears the bearded man calling to her from the bar. “I thought you said the kitchen was fucking closed!”

“Huh?” She shrugs, nodding her head in agreement as she spots the cook, Jason, walk out of the kitchen with the previously ordered wings. “That was the last order of the night, man, sorry.”

“The cooks right there!” The bearded man says, pointing at Jason as he walks back through the swinging double doors.

“Kitchen’s closed, sir.” Alia sighs, placing her hand on her hip. “He’s getting all cleaned up to go home, now, I can get you some pretzels or peanuts…” She starts.

“Hey! Hey, asshole!” The bearded guy yells, getting up from his stool to yell into the window. “Do me a favor and do your fuckin’ job and get us something to eat out here!”

“Kitchen’s closed.” Alia says, sternly. “Just sit down and drink your beer. Actually…” She says, pointing towards the door. “There’s a vending machine in the entrance. It’s got some pretty good chips and stuff.”

“If I wanted chips, I would have stayed home.” He says, walking around the bar towards the double doors to the kitchen.

“Hey!” She says, running over to the door. “Hey, you can’t go back there! You can’t go in the kitchen, sir…”

Alia steps between the doors and the bearded man, pointing back towards the bar.

“Come on, man.” She says. “Join your friend, drink your beer, we’re closing soon and the kitchen’s already closed.”

“Get out of my fucking way.” He says, pushing Alia out of the way and into the corner of the bar.

“Ah!” She gasps, sucking in her breath as she grabs at her poked ribs.

“Do you have a problem, asshole!?” She hears a deep voice yell from across the bar.

Alia looks up, gulping as she watches a tall, dark haired man in a worn leather jacket and a tight pair of jeans walk toward them.

“It’s alright, don’t worry about it…” Alia says, trying to get between them before stepping out of the way quickly as the new man brushes past her.

She rushes for her phone, ready to dial the local police as she watches him grab the bearded man by the shoulders before pulling him across the floor.

“She said the kitchen’s closed, so that means the kitchen’s fucking closed, understand?” He says, his voice a growl as he pushes the bearded man towards the door.

“Whatever, dude.” The guy says, raising his voice to call out to his friend still sitting at the bar. “Let’s get out of here, this place is a shit hole!”

“Leave it here.” Alia says, grabbing the two bottles as the guy’s friend gets up from his stool. “You can’t take it outside. Get going. I’m about to call the police.”

The guy nods, walking away to follow his friend outside, stepping around the tall man as he walks out the door.

Alia huffs, rubbing her fingers over her forehead as she walks over to the double doors in the kitchen.

“Jesus Christ!” She says, holding her hands up in the air as she gazes across the kitchen towards Jason as he washes the last of the dishes. “Some people are crazy! They don’t listen!”

“People can get really nasty when the kitchen’s closed.” Jason shouts across the kitchen. “You get used to it after a while.”

Alia nods, taking another deep breath before walking back out into the bar.

“What a jerk, right?” She hears the same deep voice as before say to her.

She blushes, nodding her head slightly as she looks up from her feet, her eyes gazing over his sharp jaw before resting on his ice blue eyes.

“Some people just want to cause trouble I guess.” She whispers, walking towards him and leaning her elbows on the counter in front of him. “Thank you though.” She starts. “I was honestly a little nervous when I saw you walking over. I thought there was going to be a big fight.”

“I have a little rule.” He says, reaching over to grab the half empty beer bottle on the bar top, before slightly tipping it over to read the label. “I don’t fight in front of pretty girls…”

Alia giggles, covering her mouth with her hand before pressing her fingers against her hot cheeks.

“I tell you what…” Alia says, turning around and reaching over to beside the hand sink to pick up a damp rag before bending down to grab a bottle of cleaner. “We’re closing soon. Stick around for a little while after and I’ll buy you a few shots.”

“Yeah.” He says, leaning back slightly in his stool. “Yeah, maybe I will stick around. I’m Leon, by the way.”

“Leon?” She confirms, flashing her teeth as she tries to fight a smile. “Alia.”
