“
Kate
Mae!” I heard as soon as I entered the cabin. I was gripping onto my side. I think I broke a rib. I immediately looked up.
“Tristan!” I grinned and ran for him, dropping my board and my other stuff, going over to hug him.
“You dropped Avalanche,” he pointed out.
“Ehh, Garrett can stay on the ground. I need to hug my brother first,” I smiled and kissed his cheek. ”Why are you here?”
“It’s winter break, and there’s snow. Of course I’ll be here!”
“Where’s my sister?” I asked looking behind him.
“With her brother,” he frowned. “Wait, where is he? Aren't you guys always attached on the hip?”
I frowned. “We kind of didn’t come here together…,” I said slowly and quietly.
“What the fuck happened?” he asked me, his face turning red in anger.
I reached up to touch my brother’s shoulder, but immediately recoiled my hand. “Fuck!” I groaned, clutching onto my side. More pain came shooting in and I made my way to the couch, groaning. I didn’t make it though. I soon blacked out.
~Tristan~
Infuriated, enraged, fuming, outraged. That’s how I felt at the moment. That son of a bitch! I knew I shouldn’t have trusted him!
“That Fucker is gonna die,” I heard myself growl.
I looked at
Kate
, with a fearful look on her face. She reached up to me, trying to calm me down but immediately recoiled her hand back and gripped onto her side. “Fuck,” I heard her groan. Her face contorted into a look of torment and for a second I was completely confused. Then she lost her balance.
“Holy shit!” I went and caught her before she hit the ground. “Lago! Mitrani! Davis! Aguirre! Where are you guys?!” I shouted out.
They all came running in. A mixture of ‘fuck’s and ‘shit’s went around the room. “She broke a rib,” Jack said quietly.
“Well, what are you fuckers standing there for?! Get my sister to the hospital!” I yelled. They came rushing and took
Kate
from my arms, making phone calls, and whatnot. “I’ll be back,” I muttered.
“Where are you going?” Scotty asked me.
“I’m gonna beat some fucker up,” I growled and walked out the door.
“Wait!” Scotty yelled, but I kept going. He eventually caught up to me. “Tristan, think about this,
Kate
didn’t tell him she was here for a reason,” he reasoned with me. “All of us know that
Kate
always has a reason for the things she does, no matter how much we don’t understand it,” he sighed. “So, we should trust her now, and let her do this on her own, and we’ll step in when she can't carry herself anymore. You’re her brother, and you should know that more than the rest of us.
Kate
is strong, she’ll be fine. If she wouldn’t be, I’ll beat that fucker’s ass with you,” he told me. I stopped and took a deep breath.
“I guess man, but I don’t know how I’m going to do this, faking that I don’t wanna strangle him when I do,” I smirked.
“Trust me, I was about to take him down chutes, but Jack called,” he half smiled.
“Thanks dude, we should get going to the hospital,” I sighed.
“The heli picked up
Kate
, she should be there by now,” he said. I nodded and made our way to my car.

Cold. Noise. It was cold and there was noise. There were frantic hushing voices. I squinted my eyes, trying to open them and the voices stopped. I then heard some shuffling.
“
Kate
?” A voice squeaked.
John
. I was about to speak, but my throat was dry. I furrowed my eyebrows. “Are you okay? Are you in pain? Should I get the doctor?” he asked frantically. “
Josh
, go get the doctor,” he said.
I shook my head, and surprisingly succeeded.
“Are you okay?” he asked. I nodded. “Do you feel any pain?” I shook my head. “Do you want water?” I nodded again.
I waited a few seconds, some grumblings and doors opening until somebody came up to me and my bed started inclining to a sitting position. I felt the bed sink on my right side, and arms wrap protectively around me. I furrowed my eyebrows and I felt a glass on my lips. I felt how dry it was, so I quickly took a drink, lifting my right hand to tip the glass. When I was sure that no liquid was left, I let go of it as the person took it away. I heard it clank against something, which I’m guessing is a side table. I then took my hand and rubbed the sleep from my eyes.
“Can you guys turn off the light, please?” I heard myself croak. I sounded broken. I sounded weak. I sounded like my old self before I met Ryan, I thought. I quickly erased it from my mind and concentrated on opening my eyes. I felt the red from my eyelids dim, slowly opened my eyes. “Can you slowly turn it back on?” I croaked again, as my eyes began to adjust.
Gladly, it was one of those switches that you can control the dimness.
It took about 5 minutes until I finally was adjusted to the light. I saw the guys standing near the door, next to the light switch.
Josh
, Scotty, Danny, Kevin, Jack and my brother. I saw Stephanie beside her. The door then opened, and a head popped inside.
John
?
I quickly craned my head to see who the fuck was beside me. I then glared and pushed him off. Everyone else gasped. I glared at them and they muttered incoherent words before opening the door and walking out one by one. My brother and Stephanie looked at me in an understanding way.
“I’ll leave you two to talk,” Tristan said gruffly with a nod, and followed his girlfriend out the door,
closing it behind him.
“What are you doing here?” I asked him, I was quite shocked with how powerful my voice sounded. He was now seated on a chair beside my bed.
“Am I not allowed to be here?” he glared at me.
I laughed dryly. “You decide to care now?”
“What are you doing here anyways?”
“Don’t answer my question with a question,” I snapped.
“You’re not supposed to be here. You’re supposed to be at home, safe. With no broken ribs, perfectly safe.”
“So, you’d only care if I break a rib? So, shall I break the rest of my bones, so you’d actually sit here and talk to me for more than 2 minutes?”
“I told you, your sport is more dangerous than mine. You broke a rib and have I gotten an injury? No,” he took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose.
I scoffed. “As if I know what’s going on with you nowadays.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means that you don’t care enough to let me know you’re going on vacation. With the team. With girls,” I glared at him.
“So, you’re my mom now?” he retorted “And I did tell you,” he said matter-of-factly.
“After I asked you about it. If I didn’t ask you, then you wouldn’t have told me,” I said. He kept quiet and looked down, taking a sudden interest at his hands. “You’re not denying it,” I said quietly. “What happened to us?” I asked him.
He looked up at me, surprised. “What are you talking about? Nothing happened.”
“Nothing?” I scoffed. “Ryan, look at us. You’re 5 feet away from me, and you’re leaning towards the door. You wanna get out of here already because you know that your
friends
would be looking for you soon. We speak to each other, what? Once a week? When was the last time you’ve said a word to me? When I called you that one time? When was the last time you told me you loved me? 2 months ago? Remember when you couldn’t bear to not talk to me for more than 2 hours? I miss
that
Ryan. The Ryan
that would turn down anything to be with me,” I said on the verge of tears but nothing came out.
“You started it. You took that project and spent no time with me, so I decided to do something better,” he said.
“Ryan, that was for my family, if you didn’t realize. And also if you didn’t realize, that after that, I tried my best to spend time with you, but you were too scared that the team would find out.”
“It was your idea.”
“It was, but I didn’t mean to take it seriously,” I sighed.
“It was your fault,” he said.
That caught me off guard. “Get out,” was all I said. He didn’t even protest and ran out of there as fast as he could.
I sighed, and closed my eyes. Headache.
I heard the door open, and I opened my eyes, seeing Stephanie come in. She smiled weakly at me and walked over to me. The moment she wrapped her arms around me, I started weeping.
“What happened, Lyn?”
“H-He.. U-us. I.. th-think. We’re o..o..over,” I stuttered between sobs.
“Why would you say that?!” she said shocked, holding me at arms length.
I proceeded to tell her about what has happened lately. She commented on the parts where it was appropriate to comment on. By the end? Well, she was
Pissed Off
.
“He didn’t tell you he was coming here?!” she shrieked. I sighed and shook my head. “Fucking ass, I’m gonna go deal with this,” she said standing up. I shook my head and pulled on her wrist. “Let go of me
Kate
Mae. You broke a rib, and he just stormed out,” she said. “I thought Tristan was exaggerating, but I guess not. I’m gonna go deal with that fucker,” she growled.
“Relax,” I sighed. “You’re becoming more and more like my brother, it’s scary,” I joked lamely.
“Don’t even try to calm me down Lyn, because I’m beyond pissed off at the moment,” she growled.
I sighed again. “Stephie, just relax. I’ll take care of it. If he really cares, then he’ll come back, if not,” I thought about something to say after that, but I couldn’t think of anything. At all. I was too used to Ryan
being around that I’ve never actually thought of him leaving. “Then I guess, I’ll figure that out,” I said after a few moments.
“Oh
Kate
,” she said and hugged me tighter.

It’s been three days since the incident happened. I was discharged later that afternoon, since I demanded that I was fine. I was told that I was out for 2 days, worrying the doctors.
“You were out for two days,
Kate
. They need to make sure you’re okay,” Scotty tried to reason.
“Two days?! I missed two days of snowboarding?! Fuck,” I mumbled.
The guys laughed. “Wow, you might as well have been in a coma for two days, and you complain about missing snowboarding? Seriously?” Stephanie scoffed.
“It’s the love,” the guys and I said at the same time. We all looked at each other and busted out laughing. Stephanie rolled her eyes and threw her hands up in defeat, walking out the door.
“Are you sure you can ride, DeLuca?” Lago asked me.
“Of course, I can, Mr. My mouth is wired shut,” I smirked.
“Shut it,” he glared. I stuck my tongue out at him.
“Let’s do this!” Jack shouted from behind me, and tackled me, throwing me over his shoulder. “Bring the boards,” he shouted out. “I’m bringing the girl,” he said and walked me to the gondola.
“Put me down, Jack,” I chuckled.
“No, I don’t want to,” I heard his pout through his voice.
“You just love having my butt on your face, huh?”
“Yep,” he laughed.
He put me down, finally. Everyone else joined us near the lift line, and rode the lift up the mountain.
We decided to do freestyle today. Everyone had their Go-Pro cameras with them, hoping to catch epic shots for their website.
“Your turn, girlfriend,”
John
winked at me. I rolled my eyes and got up from the snow, fixing my earphones and choosing a good song. I then checked if my camera man was ready.
John
gave me the thumbs up, and I showed off my skills.
I got to the bottom, stopping abruptly when I heard familiar voices.
“Whoa shit, almost ran into you,”
John
said. He must’ve seen the look on my face. “What’s up?”
“Ryan and his demons,” I frowned.
Yes, they were so loud that through the wind, the sound of waxed boards gliding against the snow, I could still hear their voices.
“
Kate
!” I heard Mikkel shout from the crowd. I slowly turned around, closing my eyes tightly, then opening them, giving him a fake smile. “I wanna introduce you to some people,” he said.
“Oh, uhm, I have to get back up there. We’re trying some new stuff out,” I tried.
“It’ll be quick, plus Scotty-boy will understand,” he said pulling me with him. Since I was on my snowboard, it was easy for him. I gave
John
a ‘help’ look and he just gave me a sympathetic look, and trailed behind me with the camera.
“Guys, this is
Kate
Mae,” Mikkel said.
“We know her!” Audrey smiled and gave me a hug. “What are you doing here?” she asked.
“I was just uhh, snowboarding,” I said dumbly.
“Oh of course you were,” she giggled.
“You should join us,” she smiled. “Mikkel and Jay are teaching us,” she giggled. Ryan just looked at the ground, not saying anything. I wanted to smack him at the moment.
“I uhh, have plans,” I tried.
“I can ask them up there right now,” Mikkel offered. I’m not liking him right now. He took out his walkie talkie, and pressed a button. “Mikkel here,” he said.
“Sup man?” I heard Jack say.
“You guys need
Kate
?”
“Why, what’s up?”
“Can I borrow her?”
“Yeah, go ahead. Scotty and I are just gonna go back country for a bit then.” Fuck you Mitrani, Fuck you.
“Alright, see you guys, thanks.” Mikkel smiled at me. “I guess we’re running together, yay!” he smiled and we went on our way.
