• Jacob is called to a meeting with some of Sam’s pack; they want Jacob, Seth, and Leah to rejoin them, but all three say no; Jacob thinks the Alpha bond is permanent

CHAPTER 14
 

• Bella is better; her whole face lights up when she sees Jacob

• Jacob starts taunting Rosalie with blonde jokes

• The fetus breaks one of Bella’s ribs

• Alice gets headaches around Bella; she feels better near Jacob

• The Cullens give food and clothes to the now homeless wolves; Jacob and Seth accept, but Leah doesn’t

CHAPTER 15
 

• Bella and Charlie talk on the phone; neither Edward nor Jacob condones this

• Bella asks for Jacob; her face lights up again when she sees him

Jacob sits next to Bella to keep her warm; Rosalie brings Jacob food in a dog dish

• Bella says Carlisle thinks the baby will be born within four days

Jacob feels his ties to Bella get even stronger; Bella thinks that Jacob is supposed to be in her life, but not like this—like they got off track somehow

• Edward tells Jacob about old myths that say vampire babies chew their way out of the womb

CHAPTER 16
 

• Jacob’s pack is still protecting the Cullens’ land

Jacob congratulates Leah on being less annoying than Paul; Leah thinks Jacob makes a good Alpha; Jacob teaches Leah how to better enjoy eating as a wolf

• All the Cullens go hunting except Edward and Rosalie

• Edward hears the baby’s thoughts: The baby is happy and adores Bella

Jacob now sees Bella and Edward as a happy little family; he feels alone and in pain

• Edward hears Jacob’s pain and gives Jacob the car keys and tells him to get away

CHAPTER 17
 

• Jacob races away toward Seattle

Jacob hopes he can imprint on someone so he won’t hurt over Bella anymore; he compares everyone to Bella; he goes back to be with her

• Edward tells Jacob they want to deliver the baby early—tomorrow

• Edward asks Jacob, the true Alpha, to grant him permission to save Bella

In anguish, Jacob consents

• Bella bends and there is a ripping sound followed by a shriek of pain

CHAPTER 18
 

• Bella is semiconscious; her body jerks and twitches; there is a wild thrashing in her body, and sharp snaps and cracks

Edward injects Bella with morphine; Rosalie uses a scalpel to cut Bella’s skin; blood gushes out, and Rosalie’s eyes glint with thirst; Jacob knocks Rosalie out the door, hitting her in the face and gut; Alice drags Rosalie away; Rosalie does not fight back

• Jacob performs CPR

• Edward uses his teeth to get to the baby; Jacob doesn’t look away from Bella’s face

Bella sees the baby, Renesmee, then gasps; Edward snatches the baby away

• Jacob continues CPR as Bella’s eyes roll back; her heart falters

Edward injects a syringe of his venom into Bella’s heart; he bites her in more places to force venom into her body

• Jacob sees there is no life in Bella—she is a broken, bled-out corpse

Bella’s dead body has no draw for Jacob now, so he leaves; Jacob gave everything to save Bella, but she sacrificed herself to be torn apart by a monster

• Jacob hears Rosalie downstairs, cooing to the monster, feeding it blood

Pain and hatred wash through Jacob—the thing must be destroyed; Jacob can feel the pull tugging him toward the abomination

• Rosalie turns around and Jacob looks into the baby’s eyes

Everything that made Jacob what he was floats away and the universe swirls around only one point: Renesmee

CHAPTER 19, BOOK THREE—BELLA
 

• Bella is bewildered by the pain and darkness

The morphine keeps Bella paralyzed while the venom burns; Bella wants to stay alive for Edward, Jacob, and Renesmee; Bella burns but forces herself to remain silent to lessen Edward’s anguish

• After two days Bella’s heart stops; she opens her eyes

CHAPTER 20
 

• All of Bella’s senses are magnified: sight, smell, taste, hearing, touch

A touch sends Bella into a defensive crouch, until she sees it was Edward; Bella gasps at the beauty of Edward’s face, voice, and scent

• Bella looks in a mirror and doesn’t recognize herself; she has red eyes

• Jasper is perplexed by Bella’s self-control

CHAPTER 21
 

• Edward takes Bella hunting before letting her see Renesmee

• Bella can run and jump like Edward; she now has raw, massive power

Everything physical is easy, but it’s hard for her to focus the expanded capacity of her mind

• Bella catches the scent of deer, but then smells something more fragrant and turns toward it

Bella hears a pursuer behind her, so she turns and snarls—it’s Edward; Bella realizes the fragrant smell is human and runs away

• Bella kills a mountain lion and feeds

CHAPTER 22
 

• Edward and Bella race home to see Renesmee

Jacob meets them outside to test Bella’s control; Bella is happy that Jacob is still her friend

• Bella sees Renesmee; she looks two months old

Everyone, including Jacob, is afraid to let Bella hold Renesmee; Edward tells everyone about Bella’s control on their hunting trip

• Renesmee touches Bella’s face; Bella sees Renesmee’s thoughts and memories

• Bella sees how Jacob stares at Renesmee

Bella is angry that Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee; Jacob calls the baby Nessie and Bella lunges for his throat

CHAPTER 23
 

• Because Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee, the pack cannot hurt her; the treaty is reinstated

• Renesmee is growing at an alarming rate

• Jasper is discomfited by Bella’s control—he wonders if super-self-control is her gift

• Renesmee shows Bella every happening of her day

Renesmee wants Bella to know all about her


Alice hands Bella a key—today is Bella’s nineteenth birthday

• The birthday present is a house for Bella and Edward: a storybook stone cottage

Bella and Edward spend a romantic night together

CHAPTER 25
 

• Jacob thinks he can help Bella stay in Forks by having Charlie see her and let him make the wrong assumptions

Jacob phases in front of Charlie, then tells Charlie that Bella has changed, that she and Edward are caring for a special baby; Jacob starts to tell Charlie more, but Charlie wants to hear as little as possible—he’d like to remain on a need-to-know basis; everyone is angry with Jacob, but Jacob didn’t realize the danger or the pain he was causing Bella; Alice has colored contacts for Bella, to fool Charlie; Bella gets a crash course in acting human; Bella instructs Renesmee not to touch or bite Charlie

• Charlie arrives and sees Bella; he feels shock, disbelief, fear, anger

Edward introduces Renesmee as his orphaned niece; Charlie sees the resemblance to Bella and himself

CHAPTER 26
 

• Charlie spends the day with the family

Bella explains her daughter’s name: Renesmee = Renée + Esme; Carlie = Carlisle + Charlie; Charlie acknowledges that Bella looks good and tells her he’ll get used to the change in her

• Bella is angry about Emmett’s embarrassing comments

Bella beats Emmett at arm-wrestling

CHAPTER 27
 

• Renesmee speaks at one week, walks at three weeks; at this rate she will be an adult in four years

Edward and Carlisle plan a trip to South America to find answers

• Aro sends Bella a wedding gift

Bella needs to go see Aro alone in order to protect Renesmee

• Irina comes to apologize but sees Renesmee from a distance and assumes she is an immortal child; Irina runs away

CHAPTER 28
 

• Alice has a vision of the
Volturi and warns the others that they’re coming

Irina has gone to the Volturi with her mistaken assumption; the Volturi plan to destroy the Cullens

• The Cullens need friends to witness for them, to make the Volturi hesitate
