Bella overhears Charlie telling Alice how bad it was for Bella when Edward left

• Alice tells Bella she has found out her real name; she had a sister, and she has a niece

• Harry Clearwater’s funeral is the next day

CHAPTER 18
 

• Jacob comes over before the funeral to see how long Alice is staying; he can’t be around vampires

• Jacob is getting ready to kiss Bella when the phone rings

Jacob answers the phone and says Charlie is not there, he’s at the funeral

• Alice rushes in to say it was Edward on the phone—Rosalie has told Edward about Bella jumping off the cliff

Edward thinks the funeral is for Bella and is going to the Volturi

• Alice and Bella hurriedly leave for the airport and Italy

Jacob begs Bella to stay with him

CHAPTER 19
 

• On the plane, Alice tells Bella it is too dangerous for any of the family to come with them—she can’t lose Jasper

Alice tells Bella Edward needs to see her to believe she is alive; she explains about the Volturi, their guard, their law enforcement, and their eating arrangements

• Alice closes her eyes and follows Edward’s actions in her mind

• In Italy, Alice steals a Porsche and she and Bella race to Volterra

It is St. Marcus Day; Edward plans to enter the main plaza when the sun is at its brightest, at noon

CHAPTER 20
 

• The roads around Volterra are crowded

Alice drops off Bella and
tells her which direction to run; there are people everywhere; Bella is afraid she’ll be too late

• The clock is tolling and Bella sees Edward at the edge of the light

She cries his name but he is not listening—his eyes are closed, his face peaceful; Bella slams into him; Edward believes that he’s dead

• Bella finally makes Edward see that they are not dead, but Felix and Demetri are already there; there is a confrontation; Alice joins them

Jane arrives and Edward’s defensive stance relaxes in defeat; they follow Jane through a long, cold alley to meet the Volturi; Edward holds Bella, caresses her face, kisses her hair

CHAPTER 21
 

• Jane finally leads them into what seems an unremarkable office; they pass through long halls with many doors, into a round, cavernous room filled with several vampires

• Aro cheerfully talks to them about their talents; he wonders how Edward can stand so close to Bella

• Aro knows that Bella is the one exception to Edward’s gift; he wonders if she is also an exception to his own

Bella gives him her hand—nothing; Aro asks Jane to see if Bella is immune to her talent as well; Edward launches himself toward Jane but ends up on the floor writhing in pain; Aro redirects Jane toward Bella—again, nothing

• Aro asks Edward, Alice, and Bella to join his guard; they all say no

Aro notes that Bella knows their secrets; she must become a vampire or die; Alice gives her hand to Aro and shows him a vision of Bella as a vampire; Aro is satisfied; they are free to go

• A group of tourists is led into the room; their screams of terror begin before Bella, Edward, and Alice can make it down the hall

CHAPTER 22
 

• Bella stays awake all that day and through both plane flights—she doesn’t want to miss a second of her time with Edward

In Edward’s arms, it is easy for Bella to fantasize that he still wants her

• All the Cullens meet them
at the airport and thank Bella for saving Edward

Rosalie apologizes for her part in the misunderstanding

• At Bella’s home, a worried Charlie is furious with Edward

CHAPTER 23
 

• After a long sleep, Bella wakes to find Edward with her; she’s convinced she’s still asleep

• Edward tells Bella that Charlie has forbidden him to ever walk through his door again

• Edward is in agony over the dangers he left Bella to face

Edward tries to explain that he lied to Bella about not wanting her; he is astonished that she believed the lie after the thousands of times he told her he loved her; Bella answers that it never made sense for him to love her

• Edward tries to convince Bella that he loves her and will never leave her

Bella reminds Edward that she will grow old and die unless he changes her into a vampire; Edward refuses

• Bella decides to put her mortality up for a vote by Edward’s family

CHAPTER 24
 

• On the way to Edward’s house, Bella says her worst fear is that Edward will leave her

Edward tells her that her hold on him is permanent and unbreakable; Bella has an epiphany: Edward loves her

• The Cullens congregate in the dining room; Bella explains that her mortality involves all of them

Bella asks them if they want her to join their family; all but Rosalie and Edward say yes; Rosalie tells Bella that she wishes there had been someone to vote no for her; Alice says she can’t change Bella, and Carlisle says he can do it; Edward bargains for more time—he suggests that they wait until after graduation; Edward says he will change Bella himself on one condition: if she marries him first

EPILOGUE
 

• Almost everything is back to normal

Bella is grounded; Jacob won’t return her phone calls

• Edward drives Bella home from school to find her motorcycle in the driveway


Jacob is waiting to talk to Edward in the woods

Jacob had hoped the motorcycle would get Bella grounded, and away from Edward; Edward thanks Jacob for keeping Bella alive; Jacob reminds Edward the treaty forbids a vampire from biting a human

• Bella and Jacob part in sadness; Bella vows to see him smile again

CHAPTER 1
 

• Jacob sends Bella a note saying that he misses her, but that doesn’t change anything

Charlie tells Bella she is not grounded anymore if she will balance her time among her friends, especially Jacob

• Edward brings over a stack of college applications

• Bella and Edward see a newspaper article about a killing spree in Seattle

Edward says the Cullens are monitoring the situation—they think it involves newborn vampires

• Bella wants to go see Jacob; Edward says it is too dangerous

CHAPTER 2
 

• Bella is no longer grounded so she offers to help Angela address her graduation announcements

• Alice has a vision; Edward is evasive about it

• Edward suggests that Bella should use the nearly expired airplane tickets Carlisle and Esme gave her for her birthday: They should fly to Florida this weekend

Bella knows Charlie won’t want her to go; Edward manipulates an argument between Charlie and Bella that makes Bella insist she will go to Florida; Charlie tries to give Bella the sex talk

CHAPTER 3
 

• Bella and Edward fly to visit Renée in Florida; Edward stays indoors

Renée is insightful—she observes that Bella and Edward are more serious than she had supposed

• As soon as Bella gets home Jacob calls to see if she is going to be in school the next day

Bella assumes he is checking to see if she is still human, if the treaty has been broken

• The next day Jacob comes to Bella’s school to talk to Edward; they argue

Bella figures out from their conversation that Victoria has been in Forks; Alice saw it in her vision; Edward took Bella away to keep her out of danger; there was some problem between the Quileutes and the Cullens

CHAPTER 4
 

• Bella is again frightened because of Victoria

The Cullens don’t seem worried; Edward goes to hunt

• Bella goes to her Saturday job but isn’t needed

She drives quickly to La Push, before Alice can see what she’s doing

• Jacob is overjoyed to see her

The conversation turns to Bella’s trip to Italy, the Volturi, Victoria’s appearance, and the confrontation between the wolves and the Cullens

• Jacob wishes the vampires had never come back

Jacob wonders what Bella sees in Edward and tries to convince Bella that he would be better for her

CHAPTER 5
 

• Bella and Jacob continue their talk

Quil is happy to have become a werewolf; Jacob tells Bella what Sam went through when he changed, then imprinted on Emily and broke Leah’s heart; he explains to Bella that werewolves don’t age

• Bella promises to come back as soon as she can

CHAPTER 6
 

• Bella leaves Jacob and drives straight to Angela’s house, not stopping even when she sees Edward’s car behind her

Bella enjoys the afternoon with Angela

• Edward is waiting in her room; he is worried and angry

Edward says Bella can never see Jacob again—it is too dangerous; Bella says she
will
see him

• Edward goes hunting again for two days; he bribes Alice to kidnap Bella for a slumber party; his room now has a bed, but Bella uses the couch

CHAPTER 7
 

• Rosalie comes to talk with Bella

Rosalie tells Bella about
the awful events that led to her becoming a vampire; explains why she doesn’t like Bella; says that Bella is making the wrong choice; tells Bella how she found Emmett

• The next day at school Jacob shows up and races away with Bella on his motorcycle
