“Did I do it wrong?”
He cups my face as he gets his breath under control. His expression is filled with tenderness. “Never. You have a gift. Open.”
He slips his dick past my lips, down my tongue, all the way to the gag. He groans. He arches. He pumps my mouth like it’s the only thing that will save his life, and all I have to do is gaze up at him. I worship him.
He lets out a harsh groan, grits his teeth, and pulls out. His cock jerks, only once, and Kent regains control.
“Take off your panties.”
I do it the way he showed me; I bend over, tugging the underwear down until my pussy lips are fully exposed to him. He gets behind me and licks. God, it’s so dirty. I’m soaked.
“I was going to do it right. I was going to show you…but I can’t. I’ve got to fuck you. God, I’ve got to fuck you.” He swings me up in his arms and carries me down a brightly lit hall into the bedroom. It’s one hell of a room. It’s done in shades of crimson and mahogany. Leather cuffs are permanently attached at the head and foot of the bed, and there’s an odd-looking bench with similar cuffs. Kent deposits me on the bed and hauls his shirt over his head, not even bothering to unbutton half of it. The shoes fly, the pants and shorts land in a haphazard pile, and Kent scoops me up again and tosses me on the bed. My legs dangle over the sides.
“Legs up,” he pants. “Wider.”
He comes between them and gives me a long, lingering kiss. He sweeps his hands all over my body like he doesn’t know what he wants to touch, like he wants all of it at once. His breath comes wild, and those scars of his grimace beautifully. He cups my breasts. He lightly pinches the tips. He rolls one with his thumb and takes the other in his mouth and draws on me like a newborn desperate for milk.
I’m utterly conquered. A frenzied gasp escapes me, one that screams all the longing, all the love, the desperation that’s been locked inside me for months. It’s like he’s shooting electricity into me and giving me life.
“Please don’t stop,” I beg him. “I’ll do anything, just don’t stop.”
He pauses only long enough to take the other breast. I moan so loud you’d think I was having an orgasm. Can you have a breast-gasm? He shoves a finger inside my cunt, and I clench my thighs around him and hump him like a dog.
“Fuck. Jesus.” He shoves my knees apart with shaking hands and guides that big, glorious dick to my opening. He rubs it all over me, gathering my juices.
My eyes roll back in my head. “Please, Kent, do it!”
He pushes into me, all the way to the hilt, and his eyelids flutter. He remains there for a moment, and I glory at the feel of him. I burn and ache and quiver as he fills me full. Then he begins to rock. Sweet glorious rapture settles in my belly, and I clench around him. I never want it to end.
I’m crying.
Kent stops and kisses my eyes. “What’s wrong? Am I hurting you?”
I gasp out a sob. “I thought this would never happen again. I thought you were gone. I wanted to die—”
I cry out with a violent shudder as he pushes deeper inside me, all the way until his ball sac slaps my cunt and the tip of his cock brushes against my womb. With every thrust, he hits a thousand desperate nerves, and every time I clench and pull him farther, farther inside me. I want to meld my body into his so he can never leave me again.
What started as gentle escalates to pure fucking. He grunts and grinds his hips against me. He’s so thick that with each thrust, he pulls on my clit. He massages that place inside me, the one at the back of my cunt. He tickles it until I’m filled with awe.
I sob again. “Don’t stop. Don’t ever stop.”
He grips my hips, throws his head back, and groans, and with that and the feel of his dick punching my womb, I come. I clamp down on him hard, and with each pulsating squeeze, another surge of ecstasy cramps through me. It’s too much. Too much. I can’t take it. I scream.
Kent continues to work me, and still I twitch. I revel in the final gasps of my orgasm when Kent stiffens and ducks his head. He gives a long, tortured groan. Another one. His cock fires a stream of warm, soothing cum deep inside me, and I spread wide, tilt my hips up to receive him.
I am his. I am whole.

“In here it’s just us, just like you wanted.”
He wraps me in a thick, soft robe and gives me a tour of the rooms. Our naughty bedroom, a living room, a dining area. An office for Kent and an empty room painted with soothing greens and blues, with matching exercise mats. For my yoga? The whole suite is plush and sunny, and I note wryly there’s just about nothing I could hurt myself with.
“Do you like it?” There’s a faint furrow between his brows. My answer matters to him.
I nod and clutch his arm to my breast. “Thank you.”
The furrow dissolves. “I want you to be happy. You won’t be going outside again unless it’s for state occasions—at least not until the sun comes back. If there’s anything you want here, you have to tell me.”
I pull away. “What do you mean I’m not going out? What about my mother?”
“Of course you can see your mother. She can come at any time. We just have to arrange an escort.”
I cock my head. “What if I want to go see her?”
“No. I want you where it’s sunny. You can see your mother; that’s fine. But I’ll not have you out there exposed to all that poison.”
Poison. Dead trees, their skeletal arms reaching for a sun that never comes. A forest silent of angry chipmunks, meandering hooves, or even the buzz of insects.
Poison, like Nico and Ayden. They’re out there somewhere. I can feel their poison even in here.
Kent pulls me to him, hands on my ass, and dazzles me with a long, deep-tongue kiss. I cannot and will not say no to him. Without him I’m a tree without sun. I wilt. I lose pieces and die a little more every day.
When I’m good and breathless, he steps back and smiles, and God how I love him, especially the scars that tell me he’s a monster, a master, and a man. “I almost forgot,” he says. “There’s one more thing. Close your eyes.”
“What!” He’s killing me!
He gives me a warning glance. “How would you like to wait on your knees tomorrow, blindfolded, and with your hands cuffed behind your back?”
“I’ll do whatever you want, as long as you want me to.” I’d wait days if I knew he’d come to me.
He blinks, and there it is, that reverence. It means everything to me. It’s why I live.
I do as he asks and close my eyes.
He kisses my temple softly, lingeringly. He brushes my shoulders like I might break. He doesn’t realize that if he told me he wanted me right now, I’d impale myself on his cock.
I hear the scrape of aluminum against aluminum. A shower curtain? Drapes? I hear it again. I didn’t notice a curtain. Seriously.
The carpet is too deep, too soft to hear him approach, but I feel him. He puts his arm around the middle of my back and guides me forward. “Stop right here. Good. Now open your eyes.”
Time stops. I lean forward, lips parted, the tips of my fingers resting against what is probably shatterproof glass, knowing Kent. Lights almost as bright as the sun heat my face, and I gaze down into paradise.
“What is this?” I can hardly speak.
“It’s your garden.”
Trees, grass, berry bushes, weeds, or maybe they’re not weeds; I don’t know. I never was one for outside but…the trees. The green. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.
He draws me in front of him and wraps himself around me. “The functioning cities all have some form of vertical indoor farms, like your Plaza and Riverview Towers. They’re devoted solely to grain crops. Corn for fuel, other grains for human consumption.”
“I know about those.”
“Then you know your dad had several other buildings deconstructed to build this one.”
“We’re in that warehouse?”
“Warehouse? Is that what you call it?”
I shrug. “It was this giant building. All top secret. Dad said they were stocking things here for the future. Like, no one could get anywhere near the place without about a hundred guards coming at you.”
“Makes sense. This building actually contains a few dozen hermetically sealed artificial environments. Apparently there was a botany department at the University of Tennessee, and at the onset of the emergency a team of them collected whatever they could. Animals too. Your dad thought it was a stupid idea until people began starving. Then he built this.”
“I can’t believe it.”
“It’s our only chance to reseed the region once the earth warms.”
“It’s incredible. I mean, how do they do it?”
“It’s about as high-tech as you can get, apparently. They’re utilizing geothermal energy, hydrogen generated from biogas, reflective metal surfaces, biodiesel… They don’t even need the wind turbines. The team that briefed me said those were too unreliable for this kind of project.”
“Okay, way too technical, but—” I suck in my breath. “Oh my God! Is that a rabbit?”
It’s munching on something, and sweet baby Jesus, a bird flies out of a blueberry bush and up into a tree. I clap a hand over my mouth. I’m shaking, and I start to cry.
He pulls me around, holds me to his chest. “No more dark for you. No more winter. You’ll have trees and crickets for the rest of your life.”
“How did you know…”
He rocks his head. “Well, you may have mumbled a bit, here and there.”
I clap my hands over my eyes. “I’m crazy. You know that, right? What are you doing?”
He shrugs. “You’re everything I ever wanted. It’s that world out there is what’s crazy.”
I bite my lip. “What about Ayden?”
“Ayden’s a cunt. She’s a hole for fucking. You were never dead, and she was never my wife.”
I half laugh, half gasp. “You divorced me!”
“You and I promised ourselves to each other before a priest. It was sanctioned by God. You are my wife. Nothing will ever change that.”
I frown at him. “Seemed pretty real at the time.”
He’s silent for several beats. “It did.”
I inhale. I exhale. “So did you just tell her to go and she left?” Doesn’t sound like anything Tish would do. I don’t know Ayden, but it seems unlikely.
“No.”
Did she leave or didn’t she? My stomach twists. “So what happened?”
“It was brutal and it was ugly. You don’t want to know, and I don’t want to tell you. I can promise you’ll never see her again.” There’s something almost sexual in the gleam in his eye. Whatever he did to Ayden, he liked it. A lot.
A tiny pin punches into my chest, and a hole of blackness begins to spread.
“What about Nico? He hates me. He—”
“I sent him home. Yesterday I announced to the troops that we were seceding from Asheville.”
I gape at him. “You can’t do that. Your brothers are everything to you!”
He frowns. He pulls his hands into fists and shakes his head. “I served the Barry name for thirty-two years. Serving Barry pride almost killed you. I’m done with that.”
“Aren’t you afraid your brothers will come?”
He snorts. “I have half their army. I have the Mason troops here in Knoxville. You’re safe.”
“Not to question you. I’m sure you’ve thought this out. But aren’t those guys from Asheville going to be a little pissed?”
“Lawrence is all politics. I led the troops. Those men are loyal only to me.”
My stomach twists. “Why would you do this? I’m so not worth it.”
He blinks like I’ve said something too stupid for words. “You take me, all of me. You fulfill my every need like no woman ever has. You’re my most precious treasure and I will not live without you.”
That’s all it takes. His words drive me swoony, and Kent gets a raging hard-on. He starts issuing all sorts of orders, which he loves to do, and I obey every one. It’s a scene, he tells me. That’s what you call it when we make love—his way. I love scenes. I love that wild look he gets in his eyes. It makes me want to serve him. When he thanks me, I feel like a cat getting its ears scratched. When he delivers pain, I know he loves and trusts me. When he looks at me with that mixture of awe and reverence, I am fulfilled.
For the second time that day I come so hard it cramps me deep inside. It’s so intense I see nothing, feel nothing but the cum. I lock my legs around his hips, and I don’t let go.
He won’t let me go.
Kent is still breathing hard when he reaches for a pillow. Another. He lifts me and places them under my hips, never breaking contact.
He smooths my hair, covers my face with kisses. I’m wet and sticky down there, and he’s still inside me, softening now.
“What’s with the pillows? Now?” We’re done. Aren’t we?
“Shhhh.” He kisses me long and deep. He bites my lip a little harder than necessary. “We’re making a baby.”
OhmyGod.
We’re making a baby.
After a while he turns me on my side. He pulls me close, and his body engulfs mine. He rests his head on mine and presses a soft kiss below my ear. And then he says, “I love you.”
I don’t dream of crickets and birds. I don’t dream of peace. I don’t dream that I’m wrapped in powerful arms that clutch me with masterful love. I don’t dream at all, because I have it. It’s real.
The ice has melted, and in its place, I lie warm in my lover’s arms.
