“Callum, hurry,” Kate called out
excitedly. “You’re gonna miss it.”
“
I’m coming,” he yelled, as she could hear footsteps hurrying along the hallway. He hurried into the living room holding the camcorder up in the air triumphantly. “Found it. It’s was buried in the bottom of the bag.”
He jumped over the back of the sofa, receiving a look of disgust from Kate. He quickly flipped open the lens and hit record.
“Did you set the date on the camera?” Kate asked.
“Yes,” Callum sighed.
“The 20th of August?” Kate asked again.
“YES!” Callum sighed and laughed
, as Kate gave him a playful slap on the leg.
“I have the wine,” James announced when he appeared from the kitchen carrying a bottle of wine and three glasses.
“None for me,” Kate said, as she patted her swollen belly.
“A little sup won’t hurt will it,” James sighed. “It’s not every day my godson takes his first steps, now is it?”
“He has to take them first,” Callum laughed.
“Shush you,” Kate scolded him. “He is going to do it, aren’t you Jamie.” She smiled brightly at her little boy who was leaning against the
far sofa staring up at the three of them.
“And you know this, how?” James asked
with a laughed.
“Because I am his mother,” she said not taking her eyes off her son. “And we mother’s
know everything.”
“Well if he doesn’t walk soon,” Callum said and he pressed his hand on Kate’s belly. “His little sister will beat him to it.”
“You’re having a girl?” James exclaimed with delight. “Calling her Evelyn by any chance?”
“Over my dead body,” Callum replied
, as Kate and James burst into fits of laughter. Callum just rolled his eyes.
He hadn’t spoken to his mother in almost two years.
She flipped out when Callum told her they were returning to Ireland to live. When she made some cruel remark about Kate and her mental status, Callum had enough. He told his mother exactly what he thought of her, where to go and refused to speak to her since.
“Jamie,” Kate
called out to her little boy. “Come to Mommy.” The little boy looked at his Mom and gave her a big smile, but didn’t move.
“Is it normal for a thirteen month old not to…?” James began to say
, but stopped when Jamie took a step, then another. He balanced in the middle of the living room floor and smiled at his parents.
Kate held her breath
, as she watched her son wobble a couple of times before he took another step.
“Cal, he’s doing it,” she cried
, as the tears danced in her eyes. “Our little boy is walking.” She looked up at her husband and saw him wipe the tears from his eyes.
“He is walking,” he repeated.
“He did it.”
Later that evening when Kate finally got Jamie settled to sleep after all the excitement of him taking his first step
s. Callum poured himself and James another glass of wine and got a glass of soda for Kate.
“So
, tomorrow,” James said once they were all seated back on the sofas. “Where are we going again?”
“It’s a s
ecret,” Kate grinned. The next day was Emily’s 7
th
birthday and as they had for the past two years, they brought balloons to their meadow and set them free for their little girl. Jamie was only a new baby the year before. It was hard to believe it yet another year that had passed.
This year they decided that they would take James with them. Since he had moved over to Ireland six months earlier, they s
aw a lot more of him. He and Olly had grown a lot closer too, but James assured them, wedding bells was not even an option, but something in his eyes when he talked about her, made Kate think that wasn’t entirely true.
“I don’t get the big secret,” James pouted.
“Because that’s the way we want to keep it,” Kate explained.
“Why?” James asked.
“Because it is,” Callum replied and smiled at Kate. “This is somewhere only we know.”
