I should really hate the idea of her being on the team, but I can’t
help but hope that her schedule works with the teams. She’s very sure of herself for a freshman, and I need friends who know who they are. Because I still haven’t gotten me all figured out, the goal was just to get out of the life I had. Now that I’m at college, I just want to try to set myself up the best I can. I assure Carter, “I bet Rachel won’t have a problem with you only dancing for football. You’re really good.” Carter looks really pleased with that and explains, “My boyfriend is on the football team so it’d be perfect if I could do the football games. I love it when I can be right next to the field.”

Okay, so she’
s already with somebody on the football team. She moves fast since school hasn’t even started yet. Florida State is a competitive team, and a lot of the guys that play have a chance to get drafted to the NFL during their junior and senior years. I think she’ll be a much better friend than enemy. Just then HE enters the stadium. I have watched Keller Cameron since last year when we both arrived at Florida State. He’s only interested in football and his classes, everything else aggravates him. He hangs out with the football guys some, but at parties if a girl tries to grab his attention he freezes her out. I’ve always wanted for him to suddenly notice me, and the attraction that I feel between us. But he must not feel it. He’s never even given me a head nod.

Suddenly, though he is heading through the gym and s
traight towards me. Oh shit, I’m getting nervous. What will I say to him if this is the day he finally decides to talk to me? I look down at myself to check how I look. My deep red hair is in big braids and a ponytail. My shorts are really short and fit tight, showing off a whole lot of leg. My dance team t-shirt hugs my c-cup boobs in an obvious way. Okay, I feel pretty good about how I look until I glance over at Carter. She has bigger boobs, a smaller waist, and a tighter ass. Why the hell would he finally show interest in me when I have the world’s hottest blond right beside me.

As he approaches, Carter breaks into another one of her radiant smiles. Oh hell, no! He isn’t her b
oyfriend, is he? Maybe that’s why he’s never showed interest in any of us. He had the perfect girl back home and was just waiting for her to graduate high school. I prepare myself to fake a smile and act like everything is good. But inside I’m surprised by how much this hurts. Keller has become another dream of mine. Everything about him from his short dark hair, curved sexy lips, and bright green eyes leaves me weak at the knees. I just wanted the chance to get to know the rest of him, but it looks like that might never be possible. Then he speaks, “Hey, princess, practice is over for me, but Brayden will be there for another hour doing some more practice plays with the offense. I wondered if you’re done and wanted to go grab some food?” While he’s speaking, he slowly slides an arm around her waist and pulls her in to him. “Of course, Kell, that sounds great! Just give me a minute to talk to the team captain about my volleyball schedule, and we can go.” She seems to just remember that I’m there, “Kell, this is Athena, and she’s on the dance team. Athena, this is my stepbrother, Keller. I’m going to go run over and try to talk to Rachel, even though she’s still being mobbed by the other girls who tried out.”

With
that, Carter walks away, and I’m left to wonder if she just didn’t add boyfriend into the mix because she forgot, or is Keller really not her boyfriend. He seemed to want to touch her immediately and hasn’t taken his eyes off her since she walked away. I decided that fate didn’t favor the cowardly so I was just going to inquire and see where that got me. “So, Kell, I have seen you around last year, but we’ve never talked before. Carter mentioned to me that her boyfriend was on the football team, but she didn’t introduce you as her boyfriend. Was that just a mistake, and you two are together?” He turned away from staring at Carter to finally look at me. Normally, when guys look my way there is a flare of interest in their eyes at the very least.

His were just annoyed, “First of all don’t call me Kell. It’s Keller, only Carter ever calls me Kell. Second of all, I don’t think it’s any of your business if Carter and I are together, but I will try to be nice to you and explain because
I want Carter to have some friends on the team. Girls get jealous of her so easy and after years of dealing with that shit; she still gets upset and doesn’t really understand all the bitchiness.” Doesn’t understand, has she seen herself lately? Keller starts talking again, “No, I’m not Carter’s boyfriend, my brother Brayden is. We are all very close though so if you hurt her at all, I will make sure that you can never hold your head up high at this school again. People have tried to use all three of us before, but we never let anyone mess with Carter. So just remember I’m not someone you want to mess with, babe!”

With that he walks away, what an asshole. But I can’t be
lieve how excited I am that he’s not with her. He obviously wants her though, but she doesn’t seem to feel the same way. I actually decide that I do like Carter, which is crazy with her being so beautiful and talented. I normally only try to get close to girls that can do something for me, but with her there is just something that draws me in. Maybe we can be friends, and I can get to know Keller better through her. It’s crazy that Keller wants her that bad, and she’s with his brother. I wonder if she knows how he feels? It doesn’t look like he tries to hide it. I’ve never had the best of anything so even if he just liked me and loved Carter, I think I would take it. There’s just something about him that makes me almost desperate for even a chance to get to know him better.

I walk over to Rachel after
Carter and Keller leave and ask her, “Carter told me about her schedule conflicts with the basketball games. Are you going to be okay with her just being there for football?”

Rachel looks at me like I’m
crazy and says, “Of course, I’m okay with it! Having someone as high profile as Carter Sanders on our team will just bring us more attention this season. Her boyfriend is the new freshman quarterback that everybody has been talking about, and she’s expected to take our volleyball team to the national playoffs this year. If I’d known she was going to try out, I would have just extended her an invitation to join the team. She’s going to bring us a lot of media attention this year. Plus, she’s close to the entire football team from the rumors I’ve heard. She’s been down here since their camp began and hangs out with them all constantly. We will have a great in now to all the football parties that the cheerleaders don’t.”

“Alright, good, I had come to the same conclusion about her being good for the team, but I wanted to make sure we wer
e on the same page. I think we’re going to have a good team this year with how Carter and the rest of the tryouts looked, Rach. I’m going back to the dorm now, and I’ll catch up to you tomorrow on what you want me to do this week for the team.” Rachel smiled and flipped her long brown hair back, “Well, you might want to see me tonight if you want to come to the small football party they are throwing at Carter and Keller’s place off campus. They have an apartment that they use on the weekends, and since today is the Friday before classes start, they are having a smaller get together to start things off before school.” I attempt to maintain a calm expression and not show how excited I am to see Keller again. “Of course, I will be there, Rach. Just text me what time you are going and we can head out together, ok?” She nods and says, “Sounds good, Athena.”

Now Rachel has the same interest as me of catching an athlet
e that is going somewhere. We’ve never really talked a lot about it unless we’re really drunk, but I know from those conversations that we both share the same type. She’s had a long-term boyfriend that played baseball and got a contract with the Cincinnati Cardinals. He broke up with her before he left though because he didn’t think they could do long distance. She was devastated, I could tell, but didn’t say much about it at the end of last year. She is richer middle class so I’m not sure what her draw to this life is. For me, I want a man to be capable of taking care of me instead of me taking care of him like my mom and dad. I never want to be stuck in the nightmare of my mother’s life that I witnessed for my first eighteen years.

As I walk back to my dorm,
I think about the fact that I’m going to be at Keller’s apartment tonight and how excited that makes me. I know he’s in love with another girl, but I am just not really bothered by this since she’s not in love with him. Carter seems to be a girl that knows her own mind so if she’d wanted to be with Keller she would be. I wonder how to get him to really see me. He talked to me today, and I could tell that I managed to annoy him. But he was still watching Carter the entire time we were conversing. That had to stop, if I was going to get him successfully interested in me.

Carter didn’
t seem like a prude when it came to how she dressed, and he was obviously attracted to her. Good thing, since my party wardrobe was all short skirts or dresses with high heels. I would try to bring the wow factor and see how he reacted tonight. I walk into my dorm room and see my roommate sitting on her bed with her face in her book. Rachel and I had applied to become roommates but for some reason there was a mix-up, and it didn’t work out. Now I think that might have been a good thing since we are more superficial friends who might not have done well with living together.

“Hey, Addison, what are you reading? Classes haven’t even started yet.” “Just reading for fun.” She said with a smile
and a shrug. “Oh, that’s nice. Well, I’m going to get ready for a party so I’ll be out of the room for most of tonight.” She just smiled and nodded and went back to reading her book. I think she and I are going to get along fine. She looks pretty average with shorter brown hair and a round face. She is obviously a bookworm who wants to spend more time reading than anything else. I love books too, but not at the beginning of school when there is a party to go to.

Chapter 2

Athena

I spend about two hours getting ready for tonight. The party starts at ten, and Rachel and I want to be there before the place gets too packed to even be noticed or talk to anybody. So we are going to arrive right around the time it starts. Rach texts me that she is in front of my dorm, and I run down to her car. She has a beat up old Saturn but at least she has a car. My transportation consists of the bus system or rides from friends. I got scholarships to come here and took out student loans. I could never afford a car and college, but I waitress at a wings place down the street four nights just to pay for clothes and food. My budget is beyond tight but I’m going to get an education. That is something that I’d promised myself a long time ago. I would have a career to support myself. Watching my mom struggle for so long made me not want to play around with my future. Even if I got together with an athlete, I would make sure to finish college wherever we were.

We ride to the apartment using
the address that Carter gave Rachel, and I start to notice that we’ve gotten into a really upscale part of the city. “Rach, where the hell are we going, millionaire’s row?” “I don’t know, Athena. I’ve never been to this part of town, either. But their apartment complex is just up ahead.” We pull into sky rise condos on the water, and I’ve never actually walked inside anywhere this nice before. “Rach, you sure we’re in the right place? These are not apartments but condos, really expensive ones.” “Yes, chill out, this is the address Carter gave me. Come on, she said they were on the top floor.”

We walk into the lobby, every surface is covered in marble
, and chandeliers are hanging from everywhere. There is someone at the front desk, and we approach her. “Hi, we are here for a party for Carter and Keller.” She nods and smiles slightly, “Of course, Miss Sanders and Mr. Cameron told me to expect a lot of guests coming through tonight. You should take this elevator to the top floor. Then you will be able to walk right into the party.” I say, “Thanks!” And we head over to the elevators.

I
feel like I’m in a scene from
Pretty Woman
being in this super nice complex with a really short fitted green dress on and half my boobs spilling out. I wanted to get Keller’s attention tonight, but maybe he’s a really classy guy that was used to girls in expensive cocktail dresses and ball gowns, just great. Rachel didn’t look like she fit in any better with her skin tight black pants and see-through shirt. We made an interesting looking pair in this establishment. I was just praying no one mistook us for prostitutes before we could get to the party. The elevator door opened right when we pushed the button, and we stepped inside and pressed the button for the top floor. Just when the door was about to close, a gorgeous guy rushed into the elevator. He wasn’t technically as handsome as Keller, but he was close. He also had a much friendlier smile and seemed to radiate sex. His eyes were so dark blue they almost looked like they were glowing, and he had hair that went in every direction but still looked so good.
