“Hey there beautiful.”
She heard a husky voice reply behind her.

Turning around, she saw a tall dark guy with ruffled hair smiling at her like an idiot.

“Can I buy you a drink?” he asked and she raised her glass at him. Boy this guy wasn’t the least bit smart.

“Would you like to dance?” he offered and she shook her head as she sipped harder.

“Maybe later.” He said disappearing through the crowd.

Turning back to the bar she took another drink and downed it. She was glad the guy hadn’t been a douche and took rejection well.
Looking back, she saw Athena gyrating on the dance floor seductively to the booming music.

Running her hands down her body, Athena danced like there was no tomorrow. She could care less that the men in the club were gawking at her while all the women sneered. All she wanted to do was unwind and forget every trouble she had for the night. From her Heavenly duty to the demonic cold hearted prick that made her feel worthless.

Everything!

Suddenly, she felt fingers on her waist and that pissed her off. Here she was in her comfort zone and a random stranger invited himself to her personal space. Not on her watch, he’d just have to be an example. Bawling a fist, she spun around.

“I don’t want a black eye beautiful.” the guy replied holding both hands up.

“Chance!” she squealed wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him in close.

“What are you doing here?!” he shouted over the loud music, drawing her back but keeping a grip on her waist.

“I’m—working
.” she chuckled.

“You’re a Guardian?” he asked baffled with a tiny smile.

Athena simply nodded as she stared at her best friend. Chance had grown up with Athena and they had been inseparable. That was until he’d vanished with no goodbye. Muriel told her he was sent on assignment. But he’d never returned. She’d missed him every day after that.

“I thought I’d never see you again.” He replied in her ear, pulling her in for another hug.

“Ditto.” She said holding him back.

“Dance?” he asked and she nodded before turning around.

He gripped her waist tightly as he held her from behind. She leaned her head back as she wrapped her arm around his neck. Running her hands through his blonde hair had caused him to run his hands up to her stomach. Pushing up on her, she felt his hips grind against hers as she moaned. Turning her to face him again, he stared into her eyes. His eyes were an icy blue that radiated just like hers. But she noticed the glow from his eyes had disappeared. It made her wonder if it had anything to do with his stay on Earth.

Would her
s change if she stayed too long as well?

“What happened to you?” she asked holding her dearest friend tightly.

She was afraid that this had all just been a dream and he would be ripped from her grasp in any moment.

“There’s plenty of time to chat about that later.” He smiled. “I miss my best friend and all I
wanna do is dance.” He whispered in her ear to avoid yelling over the music.

Holding her best friend close, she felt comfort. The kind of comfort she’d missed since being sent to Earth. She didn’t feel so alone. Hazel looked over to the club entrance and saw Lucien watching Athena. The look on his face was pure torture and she knew that pain all too well. Having seen Dezmon with other women had torn her to pieces. Grabbing another shot, she downed it and welcomed the burn. Looking back at the door, she saw Lucien slink through the crowd back out the door.

Lucien bawled his hand into fist as he stalked out into the cool air. This was no way to spend his last night on Earth. Pining after some unattainable female when he could hop in the sack with anyone he wanted. But the problem was he desired Athena. That didn’t matter anymore. She clearly got over him faster than he expected her to. He wanted to storm back into the club and plant his fist through the blonde pretty boy’s face.

“Let me go!” he suddenly heard a female voice ring.

Glancing over, he saw a hooded guy dragging a girl into the dark alleyway behind the club. Those scenarios never ended well. Following them, he smiled inwardly because he was itching to pummel something or someone. The guy pushed the girl up against the wall and began to fondle her as she fought to get free.

“Stop please!” the female screamed as Lucien walked up behind the guy.

“I believe she asked you nicely to stop.” Lucien warned cracking his knuckles.

“Buzz off.” The guy replied shoving Lucien without turning to see him.

“This is going to be fun.” Lucien whispered with a smile as he threw a punch at the guy’s head, but he caught it.

Lucien winced as the guy crushed his knuckles as he spun around.
Throwing the hoodie off, Vulcan smiled sinisterly and he caught Lucien by the throat. Igniting his hand on fire, he crushed his esophagus.

“Should’ve listened to my warning.”
Vulcan chuckled as Delilah watched.

She hated betraying Lucien, but there was no way she was letting anyone else have him. Besides, Vulcan was now her Maker and she couldn’t defy him.

Athena gasped hard as she released her grip on Chance. Grabbing her throat, she gagged as Chance tried to help her to sit down. She had never felt anything so drawing in her life.

“Athena what’s wrong?” he asked concerned as she pulled away.

“My Charge.” she rasped out as she bolted from the club and he followed. Spotting them, Hazel followed.

Searching the club surroundings, Athena found a handful of Dezmon’s goons behind the club. Vulcan had Lucien on his knees and was placing something around his throat. Whatever it was had drained Lucien’s power. She remembered seeing them try that before. Manifesting a crossbow, she aimed at a Hench man and took him out easily. Obviously drawing attention to herself, the other huge guys started towards her. Walking towards them, she aimed at both and took them out one after another. When she got close enough to she slammed the crossbow into a huge guy’s gut and he keeled over as she snapped his neck.

Dropping the crossbow, she manifested a gun and fired it at Vulcan before he could react. Growling, he ran at her, but Chance jumped in the way and they tussled
. Taking that advantage, she walked to Lucien as Delilah ran at her. Delilah twisted into her demonic form and screeched furiously. Letting off another round, she stuck her in the shoulder but Delilah refused to stop. She pounced on Athena and knocked her to the cold ground, causing the gun to roll out of her hand. Attie fisted her hand and punched Delilah square in the jaw. Delilah slashed Athena across the cheek and blood instantly gushed out.

Anger swelled in Athena. Drawing her power, her hands lit up
and she grabbed Delilah by the face. Delilah screamed as the pure energy attacked the evil inside of her. Athena shoved her off and knelt to Lucien.

“I’m really getting sick of saving your ass.” Attie replied as he looked her in the eyes.

It was like a deer kicked her in the chest because the look in his eyes was apologetic. Shaking the feeling off, she unlocked the steel choker as Chance hollered in pain.

Don’t worry. After tonight you won’t have to worry about me
ever
again.” He said getting up and stalking to Vulcan.

He punched him square in the face as Athena grabbed the gun from the ground. Hustling over to Chance, she helped him up from the ground. He’d taken a beaten and wore the war scars.
Blood tricked down his busted lip and there was a nasty gash on the left side of his forehead. Looking over to Lucien she saw that he had Vulcan on the ground, choking the life out of him. Hazel caught her attention as she saw more men advancing towards them. Aiming the gun, she fired before running over to Lucien.

“It’s time to go!” she shouted tugging him.

Looking up, he saw Dezmon walking behind more men. They were outnumbered and agreed before running off to grab Hazel and disappearing. Heading back to the hotel, Hazel sat dazed. Being thrown into carnage and bloodshed was foreign to her. She wasn’t used to this life and quite frankly didn’t want to. Who was she kidding? She was happy her life changed from being a mousy waitress to being thrown in the middle of life altering situations. It was exhilarating.

Jealousy Woes

“What the hell was all that about?” Chance yelled as they all lounged in his well-paid suite. They’d hoped in a limo and drove off to the high end hotel he was staying in.

“Let me look at this.” Athena said pushing him down in a chair.

Thea, talk to me.” He said looking up to her as she examined the wound on his head.

Sighing, she looked him in the eyes as Lucien watched from across the room. He bawled his ha
nds into fist as Athena ogled the punk in front of her.

“Lucien, relax.” Hazel insisted.

“I’m fine.” He growled low, refusing to tear his envious eyes away from Attie and the douche.

“I haven’t heard that name in ages.” Attie giggled as she gently caressed his face to see how badly he was hurt.

“What happened to you?” she asked noticing he was more human than angel.

“We’d have to talk about that alone.” He
said glancing at Lucien briefly.

“Why are you jumping in the way of demon on demon action?” he replied standing up and
brushing her hair behind her ear.

Closing her eyes, she felt a hand grab her by the shoulder and tug her backwards.
Chance’s eyes flickered rage as he and Lucien stood face to face.

“Mine.” Lucien growled like a barbarian and Athena saw Chance become defensive.

“Over my dead body you evil son of a b—”

“Let me handle this Chance.”
Athena replied standing in between both of the brute guys.

Angel
Cakes, I don’t think you realize what you’re dealing with.” Chance warned and Lucien snarled furiously at the endearing word. But Chance only meant it as a code.

“I know he’s a slice of
Devil’s
food cake. I’ve got this.” She reassured but Lucien had already tugged her behind him.

Thea—”

“He’s my Charge.” She explained and Chance’s jaw dropped.

“Can you take Hazel to get something to eat while we have a word?” she pushed.

Chance
stood hesitant for a moment but agreed by silently going over to Hazel and taking her from the room. The moment Chance and Hazel disappeared Athena snatched free of his grip. This was the most confusing man she’d ever met.

“What was the meaning of that?!” she shouted irate staring him in the eyes.

“You should be more careful about the company you keep.” He scolded.

“I can take care of myself thank you!” she shouted defensively.

“That’s just it.” He mumbled. “You shouldn’t have to take care of yourself.
I
wanna take care of you.”

“What are you ta
lking about and why were you at the club?!” she shouted fed up.

“I thought I could do this—but I can’t with you—”

“With me what?!” she shouted interrupting him.

“With you all over a guy!
Any guy!” he shouted staring her back in the eyes.

“Funny.” She scoffed.
“This coming from the guy who was
never
attracted to me.”

Rolling his eyes, he closed the distance between them, but she shoved him back.

“I’m not stupid enough to fall for your trickery this time.” She said seriously.

“Look in my eyes.” He said walking up to her slowly and locking her fingers in his.

“I followed you to the club and watched you—I’d be a fool to
not
want something as precious as you.” He whispered in her ear and her knees went weak as her heart skipped a beat.

“You—you’re just saying this to sleep with me.” She stammered. “You made it perfectly clear how you really feel.”

“Lies.” He said truthfully. “All lies. I just—I’ve never felt the way I feel right now about anybody the way I do about you.”

“What do you feel?” she asked raveling their fingers together more as he inched closer.

Their lips were so close that she could feel his breath on her. Damn it! Why did he have to be so irresistible to her?! Why did his words melt the ice that he’d created around her heart so quickly? Maybe it was because she hadn’t really built a barrier to keep him out. Instead she wanted him to want her—to need her the way that he was proclaiming to right now. But was his excuse of being afraid of his feelings enough to sway her? She’d heard men were hard at showing their feelings and he was a demon so she guessed he deserved a pass. Just one.
