Her smile grew even wider and her face blushed pink.
“No, John Campbell, it ain’t crazy at all.”
I felt my face getting a little warm and knew I was blushing, too.
“Okay, I’ll meet you at the movie theatre around 7:00 p.m. Is that okay?”
“Suits me jes fine,” she grinned and turned back around and headed down the street.
I watched her walk away, while studying her confident, ladylike strut. Maybe she spoke in slang, but she was as classy as an aristocrat. The sky was blue with big puffy clouds scattered across it. As Delilah walked into the distance, two little boys ran into the street kicking a rubber ball back and forth.
The smell of lilacs filled the air and I felt like a schoolboy again. That feeling of the future being wide open, the excitement of what could be; I felt the awakening of childhood optimism that anything is possible.
