Later that evening
Lexi
“She knows about the money…” Diamond sighed leaning back on the sofa, locking her eyes
to the ceiling. “…and she threatened us. She said she wants to kill us. I think she thinks that will keep us from testifying against her. Either way, I know she wants revenge.”
“Ugh, now this shit. What the fuck are we gonna do?
We ain’t got no fucking heat, and I know that bitch gon’ cop her something. She ain’t gon’ bring just a knife to fight.” I said as I stood, and walked around in circles.
“Calm down. That bitch
ain’t gon’ make her presence known ‘til she’s ready. The fact that she called let me know that she’s looking for a battle. That bitch thinks she’s an army or something. So, we got the money to do what we need to do.”
“That’s still not telling me shit, D., and how the fuck did she find out that we stole the money? It could’ve been anybody.”
“She thinks she knows we did it, but I gave her no info. I guess she thinks we’re the only ones capable of doing it. We’re just gonna gear up and be ready for that bitch. Simple as that,” Diamond smirked. “If we go down, we damn sure will do it swinging.”
“Man, I ain’t got time to be going to war with this bitch
,” I replied, picking up broken pieces of glass to throw in the trash.
“Huh? Awe com’ on now. Shit, I’m glad this
nigga broke up with you. He’s makin’ you soft as hell. Girl, you need to get up out of that shit.”
“What the fuck you mean, Diamond? This shit was always between you and Pandora. I was never in that shit
; y’all just put me in it,” I hissed at my sister.
“Alexis Burden, you were in it the minute you decided to keep Kojack for yourself. Don’t you see, kitten
? He’s the root to all evil,” Diamond said, shaking her head in disbelief at how naïve I really was.
“No. No
, I won’t believe that. Pandora is just a crazy bitch who needs to be stopped.”
“And none of us had any problems until he came into the picture. We were a team.”
“Diamond, you need to get it together. Pandora never cared shit about us after that night. The night she tasted blood for the first time, you said it yourself. It’s all about money; it was always just about the money.” I grabbed the broom and began sweeping up the broken pieces of her relationship. “Get a clue.”
“Ugh, whatever bitch
, just take that fucking suitcase and put it under the kitchen sink for me, would ya?” Diamond snapped as she headed for the staircase beginning to mumble. “And, shut the fuck up. Damn.”
**
I woke up in a icy sweat, breathing hysterically and wishing I were clenching a cold piece in my hands. I missed the shit out of my sisters. One of them would've known what the hell to do in this situation I was in. More importantly, they wouldn't have allowed me to fuck over all that money like I did, let alone terminate my pregnancy.
Shaking it off, I looked around the
nearly dark room, searching for Superior. There weren’t even any voices sounding off in the other room. Silence filled the air along with rain tapping outside the window, rain in the dead ass of winter.
My feet hit the floor as I got up from the bed, heading out the room towards the only well lit room in the house, the bathroom. Superior was there, wrapping her naked body with a large, blue bath towel. Water was still dripping down her light brown skin.
She looked up at me with a sultry look in her eyes. I knew what she wanted, and I wanted it too. But, I couldn’t give it to her without seeing that nigga’s face fucking her too. A part of me wished he would walk in right now to see us in the compromising position we were in, pissing him off so that he’d never come back.
“Hey, babe. I just thought I’d take a shower since you were sleeping so peacefully,” Superior cooed as she moved closer to me. She wrapped her arm around my torso
and grabbed a fistful of my ass.
“The last thing I need is to sleep peacefully. But thanks,” I reciprocated the gesture, squeezing her ass just the same. “Any word from your boyfriend yet?”
“He’s not my boyfriend, and no. I was going to call him back in a few minutes. He must still be in the field.”
“Or looking for me.”
I curled my lips in repugnance. “Anyway, if he isn’t your boyfriend, you could’ve fooled the fuck out of me.”
“He’s not. I told you
I don’t care about him. He was just tossing a lot of dough in my face, enough to have me living comfortably, never having to shake my ass again. I saw my opportunity, and I took it.” She sweetly pecked kisses on my neck.
“I can’t fuck you, Superior.”
“I don’t need you to fuck me. I need you to make love to me.”
“Well, I can’t do that either.” I lowered my head.
“Why not?” Superior opened up her towel, dropping it to the floor. “You don’t miss any of this?”
I stared down at all of her tattoos. They were so sexy on her well-toned body. My nipples grew hard and my pussy moist, but I had to stick to my guns. Besides, I knew she would be aching to get this tongue in between her legs. I couldn’t make it that easy for her.
I’ve done my dirt and was currently in the process of paying for mine. If she wanted me back, she had to pay a little for hers. I slapped her on the ass like I used to do and flicked her nipples, making them nice and erect before pulling her close to shove my tongue down her throat.
I rubbed the outside of her pussy, knowing I would send it into a throbbing fever. We kissed passionately, and it was hard to back off from her thick ass, but I forced myself to.
“When all this is over, maybe I’ll give you what
you’ve
been missing.” I winked at her before exiting the bathroom, heading into the living room.
Superior was missing in action for a good thirty minutes before emerging in the living room fully clothed in a purple PINK Victoria’s Secrets jogging suit with matching Air Max. Her hair was neatly stowed away in a ponytail to the back of the head,
and she had very little makeup on her face.
It looked as if she had just finished getting suited and booted to go to war with someone. That uneasy feeling came rushing back to me. It was the one that let me know that something wasn’t right with her. She was holding back something. I could feel it.
“Where are you going?” I asked, keeping my cool.
“Not where I’m going, but where
we
are going. I just got off the phone with Andrew, and he said he would help us. We have to meet him at Marquette Park, though.”
“Why there? Why can’t the
motherfucka’ just meet us here, Superior?”
“Because he doesn’t want anybody to see him coming up in here after having seen you come up in here. He wants to make sure all of his bases are covered, or he can’t help you. He’s trying to save his job too, girl…” she paused, walking up
to gently caress my face, “…trust me boo. Nothing’s gonna happen that you don’t want to happen.”
She kissed my lips softly then turned to grab her keys and small black messenger bag. She signaled for me to come on, but I was stuck to the couch. Something inside of me was telling me not to go, but another part of me wanted to trust that she wouldn’t do anything like that to me.
Superior knows what I had been through in the past, but lately trusting her was slowly becoming a thing of the past. She stood as she waited by the open door, still waiting on me to move, but I couldn’t. I just couldn’t.
“Com’ on lazy bones. You know I got you.” Her smile actually looked authentic.
No words exited my lips. I wouldn’t be able to speak until I knew once and for all that she wasn’t the one setting me up. I got up and headed towards the door, never taking my eyes off of hers, only shooting her a skeptical look.
On my way down the stairs, I decided that I would go with her to find out the truth. If anything popped off, I would fight to the death to defend my innocence. If I died, then so be it. But if I lived, I would have the truth I needed to put their asses away for good and detox them from my life.
On the short drive over, the ride was completely silent on my end. Superior was ranting and raving about all the good things Andrew bought her and was able to provide for her. I could tell she was trying to get me hyped up to enjoy his advances and gifts just as she was.
Maybe in the back of her mind, she wanted me to play him just like she was so that we could end up being one big happy family. I had no idea why she kept going on and on about him, but after five minutes, I was damn sure getting tired of the
noise.
We had finally made it to the park. Superior parked directly behind a dark colored
cop issued Crown Vic signaling that we were at the meeting place. I could see Andrew emerge from behind one of the wide grown trees near the lagoon. He stepped out with his arms folded, taking gradual steps towards us as we exited the car and approached him.
I stuffed my hands down deep in my coat pocket, holding onto the ink pen that I had inside. One of them
motherfuckas was going to get shanked with it fucking with me.
“Alright. So, we’re here. What’s
good?” Superior asked, holding her hands out before slapping them against her thighs.
“So, your girl here is a person of interest and she ran from the crime scene when the cops came,” Andrew divulged as he licked his lips with the most sinister grin.
“I had to. They were going to lock me up for sure if I had let them in to find a dead body that I had no idea how it got there.” Agitation rang throughout my voice. “Wouldn’t you have, since you’re a cop?”
“Well I gotta tell you; it doesn’t look good either way,” he huffed. “I mean; I spoke to an old buddy of mine and he thinks that I should bring you in.”
“No. No, I’m not going to jail for some shit that I know I didn’t do. You’ve gotta believe me, okay? My prints are nowhere near that murder weapon.” I felt myself pleading.
“Who says they aren’t?”
“What are you talking about, Andrew?” Superior asked, looking at the both of us simultaneously. “What’s going on?”
“I had a rush put on the fingerprints that forensics found,
and it seems that your lady friend here has blood all over her hands.” His smile was just as devilish as the horns sprouting out form underneath his nearly baldhead.
“No. I’m not doing this. Superior, I knew this shit was bull. Both you all can fucking have each other.” I pimped off, waving my hand at both of them and the whole mess.
“No, Lex, don’t go,” Superior called after me, “Wait.”
“No, let her go,” Andrew yelled. “She won’t be getting far.”
With those words, I decided to take off running. Superior called after me even louder than before, hoping that I would obey her request to come back instead of fleeing the scene. She was crazy if she thought I would continue to trust them. I got a few feet from the back of Superior’s car before a swarm of cops came driving up, hoping to surround me.
They parked; screeching their tires, and exiting their cars, pointing their cop issued Glocks right for me. Superior screamed in the background as I dropped to my knees and placed my hands on my head, interlocking my fingers.
All of the commotion around me slowly drowned out as the flashing lights gradually blinded me. Superior and Andrew were arguing, and when I was turned around to be placed in one of the pig’s squad cars, I could see her beating his chest. In hindsight neither she nor I could be mad at this shit.
It was our faults for being so damned naïve in believing that he would ever help us. He was only doing his job; after all he was a cop. But, Superior’s reaction only led me back to believing that there was no one else on the chopping block, except Honey.
The next morning
Superior
Leaning over the bathroom sink, all that exited my mouth was dry heaves. My heart was stricken with so much grief from being stripped away from the one person I will ever love. I thought I would hurl up everything in my stomach, which was nothing but acid and some water I shoveled into my mouth before cutting the faucet off.
I couldn’t think about eating; all I wanted was my baby back. I stared at myself in the medicine cabinet mirror, as the tears ran down my cheeks. It seemed like nothing would take the pain away, but as I opened the cabinet door searching for my previous prescription of Xanax, I noticed there were a few things of mine that were
missing and some that I had never seen before.
There was a man’s electric shaver coupled with cologne and icky smelly Speed Stick deodorant. My head bowed noticing an extra
toothbrush in the holder and in the shower, men’s Suave body wash and a scruffy looking loofah that looked like it was a few showers past its prime.
What the fuck? This nigga had moved his shit in my house already.
Andrew was in the back bedroom sleeping like a baby, though. Rather than focus my energy on his presumptuous move, I headed back into the living room, plopping down on the sofa. I couldn’t sleep. The time on the microwave read 5:45am, but in my mind it was still last night. I refused to believe that Lexi would ever do some shit like that, especially when she had absolutely no reason to.
I felt like dying inside. Being up all night, my eyes felt weak and my breathing was slow. I had been feverishly calling the county all night and morning to see what, if any, was Lexi’s bail. When I finally got a hold of someone who knew how to do their fucking job, I was told that she would need ten percent of $100,000. It was her first offense and they were holding her like she was some kind of career criminal or something. I didn’t have that kind of cash on me, but I knew who did,
and I also knew he would never give it to me.
“Hey, babe. I’m going to be heading out to work early today. I’ve gotta get some much needed paperwork done.” Andrew surfaced from the back fully dressed, fixing his blue shirt collar.
“Damn that was fast. I thought you were sleeping all that time.”
“Oh, no. Well, I was, but I woke up about half an hour ago when my phone vibrated.” He stuffed the tail of his shirt into his slacks.
“Hmm. So, are you going to talk about what you did last night or are you just going to go on pretending like you weren’t wrong?” I stood toe to toe with him.
“I was not wrong and no I will not talk to you about this. I’m a cop. It is my job to put away the criminals. That’s what I do…” he paused hawking me down, “…frankly, I’m a little surprised you would even ask me to
put aside my ethics.”
“I wasn’t asking you to
put aside your ethics, I was just asking you for a little help. That’s all and just because it looks like she’s guilty doesn’t mean she is.” I picked up a pot from the dish rack, slamming it back down just for the noise. “And, what’s that shit you brought over here?”
“What shit?”
“The shit all in the bathroom. All of your shit.”
“Oh, I thought it was okay to bring some of my stuff over here since I’m going to be here more than my place. It’s just easier.” He picked his keys up off the island counter without even looking at me when he answered.
“Without even asking me first?” The baffled look on my face alerted him to my detestation.
“I didn’t think I had to. We’ve already talked about being together. I love you,
and that’s final.” The bass in his voice was strange and forceful.
I had never heard him speak to me that way before. I had to admit; it scared me just enough to realize how crazy this
motherfucka’ really was. There was no way I could see myself being with him, not for the money or anything else. He wasn’t even willing to listen to Lexi and try to help her.
He allowed his jealousy to overrun him and cloud his cop judgment. That was the
final straw with me, though. Nobody messes with my bitch. As soon as he left out the door, I would pack all of his shit and set it outside on the front lawn much like I did her. But this time, I would be getting the locks changed.
"Look, we can talk about this later. I have to get to work." He stuffed his wallet in his back pocket then moved over to me, kissing my forehead, lovingly. "We'll have dinner
some place really nice. You'll see, in time you'll forget all about her."
My eyes focused in on the gray colored carpet, not trying to hear shit he had to say. He tugged at my chin a bit before heading out, slamming the door behind him. He was head over heels in love with me for no other reason than my looks,
and I knew it. He was as superficial as they come, but he was lying to his self if he thought I would ever love him.
Instantly, I went into action. I rushed to the kitchen and grabbed a large black garbage bag out from underneath the kitchen sink. After which, I headed for the bathroom knocking all of his shit in the bag simultaneously. I pinched the dingy loofah with two fingers and tossed it inside, as well.
Feeling grossed out beyond belief, I rushed to the bedroom to see what else I had neglected to notice had magically appeared. When I got to my closet and whisked open the door, I thought my eyes were deceiving me. It looked as if this man had moved his entire wardrobe in my tiny little closet.
I couldn't even see where my stuff ended and where his began. I hadn't looked in my closet in a while because most of what I liked to wear was already in my armoire. I liked using it best because it made me feel classy.
I yanked all of his shit out one-by-one, tossing the shit on the floor since it was meaningless to me. It felt like I had been tossing shit forever as I looked down at the large pile of clothes. All that shit and I wasn't even half done getting this shit out. It made me wonder when and how the hell he was able to do all of this in so short of time.
He had to have been moving shit in gradually each time he came up in here. It was then that I pondered if the
nigga had stolen my keys and secretly made a copy of them, too.
My anger allowed me to feast my eyes on the big black duffle bag in the back of the closet. It was half-way unzipped. It resembled a gym bag and furthered the notion that he was slipping shit in here. I've seen that bag before, but I thought it was just his little over night bag so he could keep it tight in the mornings, not to take over my shit.
I couldn’t have pulled that bag out of the clutter quick enough. It was heavy, but not unbearably and as the light shined down on the cracked opening, I got a glimpse of what was inside. My fingers clasped the zipper, pulling it apart and allowing my eyes to light up from the sight within.
I couldn’t believe how many wrapped stacks of cash were in the bag. I ran my hands through the pile; loving the feel of cool paper on my skin. Never before had I seen that much money in one place at one time. I could probably save my trick tips for a year and still never see this amount of money. I didn’t even bother counting it.
Zipping the bag back up, I took it to the kitchen to hide it. I wasn’t quite sure about what I was going to do with it, but as I opened it again, I eagerly took out six stacks of cash. It came out to $60,000. That would be more than enough to bail Lexi out and hire her a good lawyer. What I really wanted to do was bail her out and go on the run.
Andrew had the audacity to keep his lottery winnings in the back of my closet, hidden behind the rest of his shit. I had no idea why he hadn’t deposited the
shit in a bank account. If he didn’t want anyone to steal it that would have been the best way to go.
It had only dawned on me after I tucked the bag away underneath the kitchen sink
that maybe his love for me outshined logic of whether or not he could trust me. It was either that, or the fact that he was actually that trusting. He had fucked up when it came to that, though. He hadn’t listened to anything that I had been telling him thus far. Being with him and loving him were two very different things.
Scurrying back to the bathroom, I snatched off my clothes before reaching to turn the shower on. While brushing my teeth, I stared off into the mirror again, hoping that I could get away with the shit. I needed that money,
and he was an arrogant, controlling prick who really didn’t deserve it.
It scared me a little that he was a cop and could definitely press charges against me for theft. But, the evidence that it was his money I found was circumstantial. In the shower lathering up, my thoughts ran
rampant thinking that all I had to do was ask the super downstairs to change the locks while I was gone and to leave the key in my mailbox. It was going to be as sweet as pie, and when he asked me where the bag was, I could just flat out deny that I had seen it.
With the towel wrapped around my body, I continued to
bag his shit up, dragging the heavy bags to the outside of my apartment door. He would never get in without getting buzzed up, but it still plagued me as to whether or not he had secretly made keys to my place.
Nonetheless, if he somehow slipped past the downstairs door, he wouldn’t be getting into my apartment without me. After I was
done, I slipped on a pair of skinny black jeans and a clingy, cream-colored oversized sweater. I snatched up the cash from off the counter, stuffing it down inside of my messenger bag underneath some papers and makeup. Turning back, my eyes caught a glimpse of the time. It was 8:45am.
“Mr. Day, it’s Jasmine from 3C. Please open up.” I banged on the basement door like my life depended on it.
“Lady, it’s early as hell in the fucking morning. Do you have any respect for the sleeping?” Mr. Day bellowed through the thin door. “Yeah, what do you want?”
“I’m sorry for waking you, but I need some work done upstairs as soon as possible.”
“Yeah, well what is it?” he continued to yell, refusing to open up the door.
“I need my locks changed immediately. And, could you slip the key in my mailbox so I can have one?” I bit my lip, nervously.
“That’s what you come banging for. You could’ve told me that later on at a more decent hour, dammit,” he grumbled, considerably. “Eh, eh.”
In Mr. Day’s language
that meant he would do it with no problem. He was an older white guy in his low to mid fifties who couldn’t stand the fact that the building was full of young, vibrant tenants. He claimed we were all trouble and did nothing but throw parties and bring unwanted attention and guests to the building.
He was just a crazy old man who was bitter and needed to stop whacking his junk and go out to get a real girlfriend. I left the building
and headed for the car. I had no time to entertain Mr. Day’s grumpiness. I needed to spring my baby from the joint.
