That Night

Lexi

“Hey, make sure you wipe down the counter when the crowd slows up. It makes for less mess to clean up at the end of the night,” Ashley, the head bartender instructed as she rushed to the end of the bar. “I’ll be back. I’ve gotta go get some more Absolut. You gon’ be okay up here?”

“Yeah, yeah. Just hurry back,” I laughed,
handing a customer his shot of Patron.

I had only been working here a few
days, but doing this job came easy to me. It was like smearing bread on butter. The tips were so hefty I made $200 dollars a night, and that was on a slow day. All I had to do was keep pumping these so-called businessmen full of the hot lead they ordered without limits.

We were told to draw the lines for them, but who was I to tell a grown person when to stop, especially when I never knew when myself these days. I could’ve kissed Mindy for helping me out if it weren’t for the grotesque feeling she gave me every time I thought about it. She was cool, but she just wasn’t my type.

“’Bout time you came back.” I nudged Ashley with my elbow, before shooting past her, handing another customer a Bud Light. “I gotta piss like a sailor.”

Alright, but hurry back. You know I need ya’ girlie.”

I jetted down the blue hall all the way to the end, pushing open the last door to my right. The bathroom was quiet. I was glad because no one would hear me squeeze out of my tight black jeans to squat over the toilet. I never trusted public toilet seats.

You never know what kinds of nasty diseases the last bitch might have left before you got there. Feeling relieved, I pulled my pants back up and exited the stall headed for the sink. My eyes caught a glimpse of my black halter-top with the words The Lab written across my breasts.

It wasn’t my
type of gear, but I didn’t give a shit as long as I made the dough. I checked my hair in the mirror one last time as I shook the water off of my freshly washed hands, noticing something moving from out the corner of my eye. Smoke seeped up slowly from the stall directly behind me, alerting me to the presence of someone trying to remain discreet.

“I hope that
cigarette is worth losing out on the money you’re missing on the floor,” I said sarcastically, still shuffling through my hair.

“Don’t worry about me, bitch. I
gets mine. Know that.” The voice was raspy and whispery, but I could tell who it was plain as day.

“Honey, what the fuck are doing? It’s the first of the month. You know you need the money.” I knocked on the stall door.

“Why do you care, Lexi?” she asked, exiting the stall, tossing her cigarette on the floor in front of me before stomping its fire out. “Get the fuck outta here.”

“Just because we’re not fucking doesn’t mean I don’t care.”

“Right, you cared about my pussy. You didn’t give a damn about me, me as a person.” She lowered her head over the sink. “You’re just like all the rest. You did whatever you needed to do to get in my head and in my bed and then you leave like a thief in the night. Fuck you, Lex.”

“It wasn’t like that, Honey.”

“Then, what was it like? I was feeling you real deeply and shit, and you just stomped all over me like I was never shit to you. For her?” Tears began to form in crevices of her eyes as she turned to face me.

“You knew what this was before we got together. It ain’t like you didn’t know I had a girl already.”

“All you had to do was leave her for me.” She moved closer to me pressing her body with mine, rubbing her hands all across my belly and back. “I would’ve taken care of you. I can love you better than she can. I’ve been fucked up without you, Lex. Just say you’ll come back to me. Please, baby. Say you’ll come back to me.”

I fought to keep her hands from unbuckling my jeans and venturing down to my clit. She was a strong girl, but I was able to push her away, sending her flying into the hand blow dryer. Her heavy breathing and tumultuous eyes told me I had made a huge mistake.

I didn’t mean to push her that hard, but I also needed to send the message that she was doing way too much. I cared for her, and we had our thing, but that was it. I was working on myself, and all she could think about were her feelings and what she wanted, never even asking me what I wanted. But, I guess after the way I treated them, my feelings no longer mattered.

“You were a fool to believe that would ever happen. Women always make that mistake, but you bring it on yourselves,” I sighed. “I can’t come back to you, Honey. I need to get myself together before I think about anyone else.”

“Oh, so sleeping with Mindy is getting yourself together? You done moved on to the next bitch, and she’s not even pretty,” Honey cried out moving back over to me, grabbing my tits, crudely. The smell of bourbon on her breath alerted me to her inebriation. “Is her pussy wetter than mines, baby? I bet you miss my sweet cinnamon flavor, don’t you?”

“I see you never skip a beat, Lex,” Superior busted in. “You stupid fucking cunt.”

“No. Superior, this is not what it looks like—“ I blurted as Honey slapped the taste out of my mouth.

“Yeah,
right. Once a hoe, always a hoe. You’re so pathetic.” Superior shook her head, and then turned to leave.

“She’s not pathetic. You are
bitch,” Honey yelled after her.

“Will you shut the fuck up? You’re only making
situations worse.” I jerked her wildly, before shoving her away from me, yet again.

“What do you care? You’re not with her anymore.” The creepy smirk spread across her face sent chills down my spine.

“And I’m not with you anymore either. Bye Honey.” I headed angrily towards the door, thinking that I should have never fucked with that damn girl.

“You can’t quit me, Lexi. I
quit you first. This shit ain’t over, bitch. It’s far from over.” Her drunken yell didn’t rattle me one bit.

She seemed all bark and no bite no matter how much liquid courage she consumed.
Even if I wanted to make up with Superior, I had to get over it because that shit was not happening no time soon. I needed to figure out how to stop getting into the compromising situations I kept finding myself in.

These hoes were thirsty in this club, but I couldn’t allow that to fuck up my money. As I made my way back to the bar, all I could think about was making it through this night so that I could enjoy my off day tomorrow. I needed the break despite the amount of time I had this job. It was already proving too stressful to handle.

Hours past and as I worked the drinks at the bar, Superior worked the same damn man over on the table dances. It was like she was trying to seduce the nigga into being with her or something. I knew she had regulars, but the amount of time she spent with this muthafucka was ridiculous.

I tried not to focus too hard on them, but every chance I had, I couldn’t help but hawk them down in the worst way. She peeped me; I know she did, and I didn’t give a
shit. She knew what she was doing, propping her tits all up in that nigga’s face. I snarled and squinted my eyes each time she looked over at me with that sly smirk perched up on her damn face. I wanted to slap it off.

At the end of the night, I had finished wiping down the bar and stocking the liquor in enough time to catch Superior before she walked out the door.
That same guy from earlier was still sitting in the cut waiting on her to come up from the dressing room. He had done that for the last few days, and it was beginning to become annoying.

What the hell did she think she was doing with this man? She was not supposed to be fucking with her customers like that, even though she slept with me on the first night. But that’s me, not him,
and he looked like a serial killer in disguise anyway. The fuck did she see in his lame ass?

“So, that’s how you
gon’ play it, huh?” The words flew from my lips as she sauntered past me.

“Shut the fuck up, Lex. That
nigga has me. Deal with it.” Superior’s lip-gloss was on high as she blew a kiss to me and winked her right eye.

“Make sure you strap up twice with that
nigga before you bring that pussy back to me again.” I turned my head, but my eyes cut back to them, not wanting to watch her wrap her arms around him.

They came towards
me as they held each other like they were the perfect, loving couple. She smiled from ear to ear like she was happily walking down the aisle at her wedding, but she knew that I knew better. She was hurting inside and she figured doing all of that would hurt me, but she was dead wrong.

I wasn’t hurt. I was far from
hurt. I was pissed and a little jealous, but hurt was not the word to describe what I was feeling. Rather than stand there any longer giving her the satisfaction of watching my frustration, I walked out, pressing the unlock button on my keychain. The more I pressed it, the more silent the air grew. There was no horn honk or no lights flashing.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you. I told Enterprise where they could find the car with no problem,” Superior chuckled as she and that dude came up behind me. “Thanks for respecting the fact that it was in my name, bitch.”

“Well, I figured you didn’t respect who ran up in your pussy so who gives a fuck about your name,” I countered evilly.

“Sore are we? ‘Cause you’ll never taste this pussy ever again.
But don’t be a bitter bitch all your life.” She clung to that asshole’s arm like he was a prize she had won.

He hawked me down like he was sending out threatening signals. I sent some right back to let him know that I was nowhere near as scared of him as he
should’ve been of me. His balls were obviously hanging a little too much if thought he had scored an honest woman in Superior. She would never love him, and she would never stay with him, not as long as she had love for me.

“You gotta eye problem or something?” I directed towards him as he laughed, drunkenly.

“I’ll see you soon pack rat.” He walked off headed towards his car, pulling a snickering Superior with him.

“Fuck them, boo. Com’ on, I’ll drive you home.” Mindy patted me on the back before heading towards her Land Rover.

On the drive home, Mindy went on and on about whom that jackass was that Superior was with. I could’ve cared less, but his name did sound familiar. The thing was I couldn’t put my finger on where I knew him.

At Mindy’s place, we plopped down on the couch and cracked open two bottles of red wine. It wasn’t my first choice, but it was all she had in the house,
and I needed to get plastered. I needed to take away the feelings spinning around inside of me. With every glass I drank, it spun faster and faster, making me feel like I had to barf all over the damn place. As I took another sip from my glass and gazed at Mindy already passed out on the adjacent leather couch, my eyes grew heavy.

I wasn’t ready to go to sleep, hell I was actually horny as hell. But, since the only pussy available was the one I didn’t want, I opted for the sleep instead. My eyes jerked to the Comcast cable box, peeping the blurry numbers it read
3:45am. I sat the glass on the wooden coffee table and leaned back on the couch, unbuttoning my jeans for comfort.

Mindy had begun snoring louder than a bear in hibernation. I laughed hysterically as her bottom lip raised and lowered as she breathed, resembling a brash yawn. I stuck my hand down in my pants holding my pussy much like a man would hold his dick. It was the most relaxing way to go to sleep.

**

The sun blinded me as I awoke to its light shining bright as ever in my eyes. The blinds to the windows of the first floor apartment were all oddly open, which I could've sworn was closed when we got in last night. I rubbed the crust from my eyes and sat up straight from the slumped position my body had found itself in overnight.

My back pained like I had worked out with world's best personal trainer. I rose stretching statically, noticing that Mindy was turned toward the inside of the couch curled into the fetal position. It was funny that neither of us was able to make it to our bedrooms last night.

The Comcast clock read 7:56am. I nudged my knee into her back gently to get her to stir. She would undoubtedly be pissed that I woke her since one of her rules was
to never wake her up early in the morning, but I thought I’d be doing a disservice as a friend by allowing her to wake up with a crick in her neck as I did. Waking up tipsy and in pain was not a healthy combination. I sniggered a bit as she rocked back and forth every time I nudged. She was so wasted; she couldn’t even feel it.

“Min girl, wake up and go get in your bed.” I yanked on her short-sleeved, pink ruffled blouse and tapped her arm.

Her pale white skin was icy to the touch. My hand trembled, and my lip shuddered at the realization of what was in front of me. Had she died in her sleep from alcohol poisoning? I was afraid to find out, let alone turn her over to check her out and be sure.

I wasn’t even sure if I should move her at all. Should I get her to a hospital or call an ambulance? I had no idea what the fuck was the next step with something like this. I, for damn sure didn’t want anyone to blame me for her death, if, in fact,
she was actually dead. It was now or never. I had to turn her over to check her face. It was the only thing that could tell me if she was really dead or not.
