“I think we get her up a little on her feet to squash and push,” Natalie suggested.
Amanda agreed. Jacob held her under one arm, while Aiden held the other as they encouraged her to push.
With a blinding burning sensation, Kylie knew it was working. Amanda had her head on the crown of one of the babies. “Here we go!” she announced. She could see in the propped up mirror that the baby’s head was pushing through. With determination she didn’t know she had, she pushed again.
Amanda turned the baby slightly as she suctioned the baby’s nose and mouth. With one final push, Amanda announced, “It’s a girl!”
Jacob and Aiden helped her to recline back from her squatting position as Amanda laid the girl on her stomach. She was mewling slightly, with scrunched up eyes. She was bald, bloody and the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. Natalie had clamped the placenta and Jacob cut the cord.
Aiden had streams of tears running down his face as he kissed Kylie.
With a small push, she pushed out the baby’s placenta. Natalie took the baby from her and took her to a ready bassinet to take measurements and a health reading. The Zehavian doctor looked surprised when he reached between Kylie’s legs. “How do you feel?” he asked her.
“Like I need to go to the bathroom,” Kylie admitted.
“Your next one is ready,” he told her.
With a small push, the next baby almost slid completely out and into his hands. “Another girl,” he announced as he suctioned her nose and mouth then laid the baby on her stomach. She already had dark, thick hair covering her head.
Amanda let her coo over her arrival before she brought the baby back to be evaluated as well.
Once Kylie had been cleaned and padded, Natalie and Amanda each brought a baby over to lay in the crook of each of Kylie’s arms. They stepped back as Jacob and Aiden stepped in for a private family moment.
At a small clearing of the throat, they looked up at the Zehavian doctor. “Your families are anxiously waiting to come and see your girls,” he said.
Aiden nodded as he scooped up the little dark haired girl and Jacob held the bald baby. They both looked adorable holding the girls.
Victoria and General Hayden were first through the doors, coming directly to Jacob to look down into the face of the baby he held. Edgar came in next and stood next to Aiden.
As Jacob passed the baby into Victoria’s hands, she asked, “Have you thought of their names yet?”
Aiden and Jacob shared a look. Aiden nodded. They had discussed names, but Kylie was a little confused over their shared look.
“You are holding baby Victoria,” Jacob told his grandmother. “We’ll call her Tori for short,” he added.
“Oh, Jacob,” she sniffed. “She’s so beautiful,” she cooed as she kissed the baby’s head.
When Victoria looked up towards Aiden and the other baby, he had passed it on to his father to hold. “This is Cassandra,” he announced, “After my mom.”
Edgar had tears running down his face as he looked at the little sleeping girl.
Kylie’s heart swelled and tears slid down her cheeks. It was obvious who had biologically fathered each girl. Cassandra had the same dark, thick hair of Jacob, and Victoria’s hair, when it grew, would be light like Aiden’s or red like hers. By naming Aiden’s biological child after Jacob’s grandmother, and Jacob’s biological child after Aiden’s mother, they were stating it didn’t matter who had biologically fathered them.
They were a family. Jacob and Aiden took turns kissing Kylie’s tears away as Edgar, Victoria and the General cooed over the girls.
