“Jay, I am sorry about what I said last night.” He looked at her. His eyes seemed to have that mischievous twinkle. “But this is ridiculous, this silence.” Jay put down his fork and lay back in the chair. He never diverted his gaze from hers. Sam looked at him. At that particular moment she wanted to push him off the damn chair.

“So what are you waiting for?” He said as he took a sip of his wine. Sam looked at him. “What are you waiting for?” Jay repeated. His expression never changed.

“What do you mean?” She didn’t understand. Jay stood up and went over to her chair. He held out his hand to her. Nervously she took it. He said in a very serious tone.

“Show me that you are sorry.” She looked at him as though he had several heads. “Get up and put your arms around me and show me you are sorry.” He said. There was a mischievous glint in his eyes. He was trying to suppress his smile. Sam looked up at him and put her arms around him and he parted her lips with his tongue. She responded to him hungrily.

“I’m so sorry Jay.” She said between kissing him. “I was cruel and unkind.” His hands on her ass, she felt him getting hard.

“Babe I couldn’t stay angry with you.” He was pulling off her top, kissing her on the neck and her shoulder. “I love you so much Sam.” It was at that moment that the baby monitor crackled into life, with the sounds of Jaime whimpering. He laughed. “She doesn’t want a brother or sister!” Sam laughed too. She went to go up to Jaime but he pulled her back into his arms, kissed her passionately and then released her. “I’ll go.” He said and he went up stairs. Sam put back on her top and began to put away the dishes. She could hear Jay singing to Jaime and her gurgling at the sound of his voice. He had settled her very quickly. Jaime adored him and he in turn adored her.

Out on the verandah, Sam was sitting on the sofa when he came out. Standing behind her, he massaged her shoulders. She closed her eyes. It felt so good. He laughed and said softly.

“You look a picture.” He came round and sat next to her taking her long legs and put them over his knees, caressing them with his finger. “You have beautiful legs, Darlin.” Sam laughed. He kept caressing them, moving higher.

“Jay, how did it go at the studio?” She asked. Pulling her leg up, he kissed her knee.

“I’m gonna do a solo album. The producer thinks some of the songs could be good.” His hand was caressing her inner thigh, she moaned softly. “I gotta figure out a way to tell the guys about it!” His hand stopping just short of where she wanted him. He got up and covered her body with his. And he kissed her hard. She wrapped her legs around him. She moaned softly as she pulled on his hair. He was hard and she wanted him to take her right there.

“Oh Sam,” He moaned into her neck. “I got to ask you something babe.” He kissed her ear and her neck. She ached for him.

“What is it Jay?” She ran her fingers down his back, driving him insane.

“Sam….” He broke off as he heard a flower pot being knocked over. He got to his feet. She sat up and watched as he disappeared around the corner.

Five minutes later he came back. She got up and he took her hand and they went inside.

“Must have been a reporter or photographer.” He laughed. The moment had been broken. Jay led her upstairs and into the bedroom. Sam wanted him to make love to her all night long. And he did just that.

**********

Sam awoke to the smell of fresh coffee and croissants’, Jay was standing with a tray in his hands. She saw the single white rose.

“Morning beautiful.” She sat back against the pillows as he put the tray on the bed. “Last night was incredible.” He kissed her on the mouth, his tongue teasing her. She laughed as he stood up and she saw he was hard.

“Don’t you ever get enough?” He blew her a kiss and went out onto the balcony. It was almost eight and there was a gentle breeze. But by afternoon it would be broiling.

Taking her coffee she joined him outside and putting her arms around his waist, she gazed out and saw the blue of the ocean in the distance.

“Never let me move from here.” She said softly. He turned to her. He brushed away a strand of hair from her face and looking deep into her eyes, they were full of love.

“Do you have to go in today?” He asked as he finished his coffee. She nodded but added.

“If you want we could meet for lunch and I could finish then?” He pulled her to him and put his arms around her. His warm breath on her hair. Sam wanted to go back to bed with him. It felt like they spent little time together lately. Either she was busy at the gallery or he was out somewhere doing something. She missed being with him so much.

She showered and dressed and went down stairs, Jay was talking to someone on the phone. He called her over and kissed her passionately.

“See you for lunch. Pick you up at the gallery.” Sam went out to the hall and picked up her briefcase and bag and went out to her car.

She was singing all morning and was wishing it to be lunch time. But it dragged like crazy. Sam had been finishing off the paperwork from yesterday when her phone rang. It was Damon.

“Samantha, how are you?” He asked. He sounded happy. “Good, I’ve been thinking about the exhibition and frankly, you’ve done better than I expected.” He sounded surprised.

“You doubted me?” She teased. He laughed. “I’m shocked.”

“Sam, I am sending out a dozen more paintings and they should be there in a week or two. OK?” She agreed and they spoke briefly about Jay and Sam asked him about Ben. She knew that for now at least, Damon was still angry with Jay but they had been through a lot together and they were good friends.

After she hung up, the young receptionist knocked on the door. Nervously she said:

“There’s someone here to see you?” Sam gave her a reassuring smile. “It’s that reporter again.” She got up and went into the gallery.

“Mr. Manteca, what can I do for you?” He turned around and smiled warmly at her.

“Those correct British manners. I’ll never get used to them.” Despite what Jay had said, Sam liked him, he had a funny way about him.

“Well, you won’t have to.” She said abruptly. He laughed.

“Can I interest you in a coffee?” Sam shook her head. “Lunch then?” She turned to him and said a little too sharply.

“Mr. Manteca, I have no interest in having a coffee or lunch with you. Now I am very busy so if there is nothing else.” She turned to walk away, when he said:

“Samantha, I would like to talk to you about GM Jay. Can we go somewhere private?” She looked at him and said coldly.

“I have no desire to speak to you or any reporter about Jay.” She went back to her office.

The rest of the morning went rather quickly. Initially she had been perturbed by Josh. But she valued her privacy and she wasn’t going to indulge in gossip with a reporter ever.

Jay had told her some of the things they had printed about him and about how they had distorted the truth when he did do interviews. So these days he only did interviews with the band and made sure, the paparazzi had little or no knowledge of his whereabouts or anybody associated with him.

Sam waited for Jay but there was no sign of him and he wasn’t answering his phone. Today she wasn’t too upset because they had made up. She told the receptionist she was going to the deli down the street, if Jay called into the gallery.

Sam passed the jewelers again. And again she stopped to admire the rings. She saw a beautiful single diamond ring, it wasn’t very large or conspicuous like some of them and it was surrounded by six smaller diamonds. The band was platinum. It was perfect. She managed to tear herself away. She knew that Jay had no intention of marrying her anytime soon and therefore he wouldn’t be giving her an engagement ring. It hurt her. She loved him so much but she knew that until he was good and ready, he would never commit to her like that.

She sat at the table in the corner. Since she had been coming to the gallery before it opened, Sam had been eating here and she had gotten to know the waitresses.

“What’ll it be Sam?” The young Irish girl asked. Sam smiled at her and said:

“A long delicious latte and a ham sandwich, please Sinead.” She glanced through a magazine and looked up when she saw someone standing next to her. It was Josh.

“Mr. Manteca, please…” He sat down and asked the waitress to bring him a coffee.

“Samantha, I only have a few questions about GM Jay.” As Sinead brought the coffee she looked at Josh approvingly.

“Mr. Manteca, I have nothing to say. If you want to know about Jay, ask him yourself.” She took a bite of her sandwich. He was smiling at her.

“You must be dying to talk to the press?” He asked earnestly. “All the women he has been with have given us the scoop on him.” Sam put the sandwich on the plate and wiped her mouth with the paper napkin.

“You really expect me to talk to you about the man I’m in love with?” He nodded. She shook her head. “Jay warned me about you. Now stay away from me.” She stood up and left twenty dollars on the table and left. Josh followed her.

“Sam, I find it very noble that you want to stand by your man.” He said as he tried to keep up. “But he’s up to his old tricks again you know.” She stopped and looked at him. He was grinning at her. “Yeah, he’s been seen with a local Hollywood dealer and a classy escort in a seedy motel.” Sam walked away. It wasn’t true.

“Samantha,” he called after her but she ran all the way back to the gallery. She didn’t believe him. It was a malicious lie. Jay wasn’t doing coke again and he certainly wasn’t with a prostitute, even if he were to cheat on her, he wouldn’t need to pay for sex. He had his pick of women just willing to go to bed with him for free!

But deep in her heart Sam knew that he was cheating. They loved each other. He couldn’t be cheating on her with a prostitute and make love to her the way that he did.

Josh was lying. He was trying to trick her into talking. Jay had warned her but she didn’t listen. She felt so stupid.

In the safety of her office, she locked the door and cried freely into her hands. She had to get out of here. This place was stifling.

Chapter Thirty Seven

Jay was sitting in the white Ferrari with Lenny. He had left Lisa inside the room. Lenny was telling him about some hotshot new boy that thought he could just come in and take over.

“Fuckin cocksucker! Thinks he can come on to my turf.” He was stoned out of his mind. Jay had no time to be listening to his tales of woe. He hated Lenny but he always had good shit. Jay looked at him. He hadn’t heard what he had said:

“What?”
Lenny laughed and took out the gun from behind his pants. He began waving it around. “Dude put that away before you fuckin kill someone.” Jay said to him. He really annoyed him.

“So what do you say man?” He was laughing and waving the gun.
