I cocked my eyebrow at him. “And of course sticking a gun in my face.”

“… and the little thing of me sticking a gun in your face…” he laughed, and I saw humour in his gaze. At least one of us found this amusing. His amusement only further fuelled my anger.

“And what the fuck is so funny, you limpless dick?”

His smile widened. “If I recall correctly, I remember you saying how impressed you were that I could come and still remain hard.”

“Yeah, it’s called stroking your ego.”

“Uh-huh, right.” We got to the door, and while keeping the gun focused on me, Kyle reached out and opened it. “Get in and turn on the light. The light is on the left, just inside the door.”

I did as told. I kinda expected to see a small dingy space, but that wasn’t the case at all. When I flicked on the light, I was surprised to see I was standing in a modern style living room, with log walls. As we proceeded further into the room, I looked to the right and saw a small kitchen with a four person wooden table.

“Keep going. Into the second bedroom.”

I looked into the first bedroom which I assumed to be the master. It contained a queen sized four poster bed. It would be a lovely cabin to have as a weekend getaway.

“Keep moving.” He gave me a little nudge in the back with the muzzle of the gun.

“Quit poking me.” I shot a dirty stare at him over my shoulder.

“Then get your ass moving.”

We reached the second room. Looking in, I shot another glare at him. There was nothing in the room aside from a radiator, a single mattress on the floor, and a bucket. I’m assuming the bucket was for me to piss in. There wasn’t even a window!

I stood in the doorway for second and stared in, shaking my head. “No way. No fucking way. I’m not staying in here.”

He gave me a shove on the shoulder, and I stumbled forward. “You’ll go where I tell you,” he growled.

Chapter 10

Rebecca

“Don’t you push me, you bastard!” Each step I took into the barren room got me more enraged. How dare he! Two weeks he’d spent setting me up for this. I was actually starting to feel something, I didn’t know what, but it was something new and foreign and exciting to me. And he just ruined it!

“Then do as told. I want you to stand by the radiator.”

I glared at him over my shoulder once more before doing what he said. I had to keep thinking and stay level-headed. I would find a way out of this. If he thought he could outwit me, then he had another thing coming. Once at the radiator, I spun to face him. He was still as handsome as ever, but there was something else about him… I couldn’t even begin to explain it, but he looked… different. I cocked my head to the side and really examined his face. He still had the strong jaw and piercing blue eyes, but there was a definite coldness in his eyes now. It was like the charm had been a façade, and I was finally seeing the real him.

A part of me felt relieved, as crazy as that sounds. From the day I’d first met him I’d felt something wasn’t quite right. Like he was hiding who he truly was, and now I finally got to see the real Kyle.

“What are you grinning about? You gone mad?” He frowned as he stared down at me. “Normally women don’t break this easily.”

I hadn’t realized I’d been smiling until he mentioned it. I didn’t bother to wipe the smile from my face. It seemed to irritate him, and I liked that. “Nope. But I just discovered something.”

He stared at me a minute. I could almost see the wheels turning in his head as he contemplated what I was saying. Finally, he asked, “And what’s that?”

“I discovered that I wasn’t crazy after all. I knew deep down there was something just not right about you.” My grin widened. “I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I knew. It’s nice to know I was right.”

“So, you’re happy you were right? You’re pleased to be here, at gun point?”

“No, no. Not that. But I’m pleased to know I was right after all. And I promise, I won’t be here for long.”

He took a step back from me and rubbed his jaw with his hand as if in contemplation. “If you really thought that, why in the hell did you ever agree to go out with me? What kind of crazy woman goes out with a man if they think something is off? I thought you were smart but…” He shook his head.

I was going to lie but decided against it. Not sure why, but despite having a gun pointed at me and the uncertainty of this situation, even though this type of situation usually didn’t

turn out well, I still felt a sort of odd connection with him. “Because there was something about you that reminded me of me. In a weird way, I was compelled to find out more about you.”

“Compelled, like I was some sort of experiment?” His jaw clenched as he continued to stare at me.

I shrugged. That was all I planned on saying to him. I’d cracked his demeanor and he was agitated. I’d won. “Now, I think I’m done with the chit chat. If you’re planning on tying me to the radiator or whatever, be my guest.” We stared at each other for a minute, and I could see the indecision in his gaze.

“We’ll see how much attitude you have in a couple of days.”

Couple of days? My mouth dropped open as I watched him turn and exit the room, pulling the door behind him. A moment later, there was a click as he locked it from the outside.

Fuck! I wanted to scream and chase after him, but my hands were still cuffed behind my back. How in the fuck was I supposed to go to the bathroom without my hands free? Unless… I walked over to the tiny mattress and sat down onto it. It took a lot of squirming and maneuvering, but I managed to get my cuffed hands down over my feet and finally in front of me.

Once done, I flopped backwards, panting hard, onto the mattress. That had been a hell of a lot harder than it appeared in movies.

What was that sound? I sat up and perked my ears. It was the faint sound of laughter – Kyle’s laughter. Why was that fucker laughing? I scanned the room, and my eyes landed on a tiny camera mounted on the far corner of the room. He’d watched me squirm and suffer, all the while laughing his stupid ass off.

Glaring up at the camera, I put both hands up and flipped him the bird.

I heard more laughing, louder this time.

“Yuck it up, fucker!”

Kyle

It had been a while since I’d been so damned amused, watching her squirm and wiggle attempting to get the cuffs to the front of her. Her cute little black dress had inched its way up so it looked more like she was wearing a tube top instead of a dress.

I sat back in the leather computer chair and rocked back and forth as I continued to watch her. I was tempted to go back and talk to her, but I knew I couldn’t. I needed to make sure she was aware of who was in control here. She seemed to have forgotten, despite the fact she was locked in the room against her will. A couple days of no food and water and having to shit and piss in a bucket would remind her. Maybe then her attitude would lessen and she’d be more willing to do and say what I needed and wanted.

She’d put up a damned good fight in the driveway. That was actually a lot of fun. Perhaps it was a little twisted to enjoy tackling a woman who was trying to escape, but that’s how I am. Though I knew her mind was spinning, working out ways to convince me to let her go or ways to escape.

There wasn’t any.

This wasn’t my first rodeo.

Leaning forward, I rested my forearms on the desk top and grimaced. Sitting back up, I looked down at my forearm and frowned. I hadn’t even noticed that my arm was torn up from the fall.

With a sigh, I got up and made my way into the bathroom. Opening the medicine cabinet, I pulled out some alcohol and bandages. Quickly, I cleaned and bandaged the area, taping off the edge. Just as I was leaving the bathroom, the phone rang.

Pulling my phone out of my back pocket, I looked down at the display and groaned out loud. It was my father. Swiping the answer button, I brought the phone to my ear.

“Yes, Flynn.”

Flynn: “Have you got her in your possession?”

“What father? No, hello? No, how are you doing? No, how’s the weather in sunny California?”

Flynn: “I have no desire to know what the weather is like there. You know what I need to know. Let’s just stop with the beating around the bush and get on with it.”

I really hated my father sometimes – correction, all of the time. I endured him because there would be a day when I’d be taking over. I just had to bide my time. Unfortunately, biding my time also meant I had to play nice.

“Yes, I have her.”

Flynn: “And what’s your plan? And where do you have her?”

Every muscle in my body tightened. “She’s safe and sound. I’m going to give her a couple of days before I start working her over.”

Flynn: “Is a couple days really necessary?”

“If you want the information you’re asking for as fast as possible, then you will let me do this my way.”

There was a silence on the other end of the line. “Fine. Give me a report in a few days. This timeframe you have is starting to test my patience.”

I hung up the phone without saying good-bye. Maybe I’d be better off just leaving the entire operation, fucking start a real life. I huffed. Yeah, right. Spend the rest of my life as some low-paid unappreciated grunt for less money a year than I paid for my car.

No-fucking-thank-you.

“Wakie, wakie, my beautiful captive.”

I groaned softly and slowly opened my eyes to see Kyle standing over me. I was exhausted, and it had taken me forever to get to sleep. The mattress was ridiculous, the cuffs chaffed, and I hated that I was being watched, like some sort of animal on exhibit. I bet I hadn’t been asleep for more than an hour, and he was waking me up. Asshole. No doubt that was his plan. “Fuck you. What do you want?”

“Just checking on you.” He crossed his arms over his chest as he watched me pull myself up into a sitting position.

“How about you just tell me what you want, then I’ll tell you to shove it up your ass, and then we can go on to stage two of this plan of yours?”

His smile widened. “Now, what would be the fun in that?”

“From what I read on the text, this Flynn character, who I assume is your boss, wants the information sooner rather than later.”

That cocky smile of his faded, just a smidge. “Flynn will get the information when he gets it. I don’t think you need to worry about me.”

“Oh, I’m not. It just seems this Flynn person appears to be as impatient as I am to get this done and over with.”

“Right.” He nodded towards my cuffs. “So, I was thinking. If you promise to behave I’ll remove the cuffs.”

“Cause you’re nice like that?”

“Exactly, consider it a good faith gesture.”

I extended my wrists to him.

He didn’t budge to remove them. “Promise you’ll behave.”

I rolled my eyes at him.

“I want to hear you say it.”

He was playing with me. Fucking annoying. But I did want the cuffs off. It would make it easier for me to sleep, piss, and more importantly, escape. I forced a smile onto my lips, but I pinned him with a glare full of anger and hate. “Could you please remove my cuffs, Sir?”

Blatantly ignoring my sarcasm, he reached into his front pocket and produced a key. He jingled the key in front of my nose a moment before leaning forward. “This doesn’t have to be hard.”

“You’re the one making it hard.”

“I’m doing it this way for a reason.” He unlocked the cuffs and pulled them off.

“Uh-huh. We following the kidnapper’s guidebook, that it?”

He grinned as he straightened. “Trust me, normally when kidnapped by people from our organization, it’s not quite as pleasant of an experience as it is for you right now.”

I rubbed my wrists, which were raw from the cold, sharp metal rubbing against my skin. “I bet. Cause this has been a grade A experience up until this point.”

“Grass is always greener, baby.” He took a step backwards. He was attempting to be nonchalant, but I could see he was doing his best not to turn his back to me as he crossed the room to the door.
