“Is that some kind of trick?” Lydia asked, the question just popping out. She wasn’t sure she liked the idea that Morrie could produce instantaneous arousal in her. Arousal at all was shocking enough.

“You mean is being respectful, reverent, and appreciative a trick?” Morrie asked. “That’s pretty cynical for a woman who had her first climax with said trickster.”

“Actually, I was talking about the way your words made me instantly ready for. . .
you know
,” Lydia said.

Morrie snickered. “Still can’t bring yourself to say sex to me, can you?”

Lydia reached out and used the flat of her hand to pop him hard in the chest.

Morrie laughed and rubbed where she hit. “I wasn’t saying it to make you hot for me, but hey—whatever works.”

“I don’t like the idea of becoming your trained Pavlov’s dog in bed,” Lydia said firmly.

The laughter started softly, but grew louder the more he thought about it. “Well, I guess you told me how it was going to be between us.”

“Stop that. You’re making fun of me again,” Lydia accused.

“I assure you I am not,” Morrie said. “That arousal is the final stage of wine making. I’d say you’re about done.”

“I don’t like the evil look in your eyes,” Lydia said.

“That’s because you’re a smart woman,” Morrie said, agreeing.

They lay there in companionable silence for a couple of minutes. Morrie still grinning, and Lydia still frowning.

“You always seem to know things I don’t,” she admitted at last. “You made me feel that way even before I got to know you.”

“Well, I’m willing to share all my secrets,” Morrie said. “Are you finally willing to share yours? Or are you going to limit me to just the one? I admit that was a doozy of one to keep hidden.”

Mollified by his sweet talk, and slightly embarrassed by her reaction to his teasing, Lydia reached out and ran fingertips through the silver and black chest hair covering the middle of his chest. “I just noticed you have a hairy chest,” she commented.

“Where were you earlier?” Morrie asked, smiling as her fingertips continued to explore.

“I was staring in the mirror at a strange woman who seemed to have lost control of both her body and her mind,” Lydia said.

“I’ve always liked strange women. Point her out to me sometime, will you?” Morrie asked.

Lydia pointed to herself. “You’ve already met her. You won’t be meeting anyone any stranger.”

Morrie laughed. “

“Oh for heavens sake,” Lydia exclaimed, rolling to her back, and then finding herself pinned under a huge naked laughing male moments after. “Get off me, you teasing dork-faced mule.”

“No,” Morrie said, muffling his laughing refusal against the fragrant skin of her neck. “You smell as good as you look. Are you going to let me inside you tonight?”

“Only if you make me,” Lydia said, her insides turning to jelly when his gaze sharpened at her words.

“Okay. I can do that,” Morrie said thoughtfully. “Just promise me you won’t be afraid when the time comes to—
you know
.”

Morrie laughed harder when his teasing earned him a hard punch in both arms. He was definitely going to be sporting bruises again.

“Talk is cheap. What are you planning to do?” Lydia demanded.

“Nothing much,” Morrie said, pressing lips against her cheek, as he whispered near her ear. “Just kiss you everywhere, and yes I mean everywhere. Kiss you until you are on the verge again, but this time there will be no relief until I get some too. This time, it’s going to be both of us.”

“Morrie, look—I don’t think I’m ready for—why don’t you just say something nice and then let’s get you some relief first so I can be sure what we have is reciprocal,” she said.

He sighed dramatically against her collarbone, already sliding down to cup her breasts.

“I quote poetry to her, and she’s keeping score. What am I going to do with a woman like that?” Morrie said against her shoulder, fighting the smile on his face as she twisted under him. “A woman with nipples that arouse so easily ought to be a tad more romantic.”

“Maybe it’s too late for me to believe in romance,” Lydia said sharply.

“Okay. We’ll skip the romance this time. Fast and furious sex it is,” Morrie said on a sigh, fastening his mouth to a hard nipple and sucking hard as her body lifted beneath his. The moan in her throat was like some jungle cat calling her mate. When he stopped, he raised his head to see a wild gaze lock to his. “I’ll do anything you ask if you will wrap your hand around me and stroke hard at least once.”

When her trembling hand sought and found proof of his need, the sound he made was as keening as hers had been.

“Not too hard,” he squeaked, against her grip. “Holy shit, you’re strong. Ease up, but please don’t stop.”

Lydia laughed. She heard herself laugh as she eased up but didn’t let go.

Morrie’s heart was hammering against her as he raised his head. “I’m getting dizzy. All the blood has left my head. Ghosts gone yet? I thought I heard a lot of moaning just a few moments ago.”

Beneath him, Lydia giggled and tightened her grip, stroking from base to tip and back.

“Stop. I changed my mind. Stop please. I need what’s left of Tommy for another purpose. Should have guessed you’d be the type of student to go for extra credit instead of just an A plus,” he complained.

Moments later, Morrie felt hands pushing on his chest. A few seconds later, he was on his back and looking up at the woman now sitting on him.

“Okay. You want control, you got it. Now what?” he asked.

Lydia gave him the smile he’d seen the day he realized he had fallen in love with her.

“Obviously, you don’t know as much about getting rid of ghosts as you pretended,” Lydia said, reaching between them and guiding him to the wet entrance to her body. It was all the nerve she had, but she wrung every last ounce of it before her hands dropped away from the task.

“I want it to be both of us,” Lydia said, her voice breathless.

“Are you sure you’re ready?” Morrie asked.

“Yes and no,” Lydia said honestly. “I’m not sure about how it will go, but I am sure that I want you. Now roll me over and get on with it. I just wanted to make sure you knew this was my choice.”

Morrie tossed her off him with a loud grunt, then climbed over her and between her legs while she laughed again. “Put your legs around my waist and cross your ankles to keep them there.”

“Never call me bossy again,” she ordered, doing exactly what he asked.

Pressing the full length of hardness against her wetness, Morrie bent to kiss her mouth first before he took advantage of the gift she was giving him. “Lydia, I wouldn’t change anything about you except to get rid of the sad look in your eyes.”

And then he eased into her, slowly and carefully, chanting a silent prayer in his head that he’d last long enough to show her pleasure one more time tonight.

“You’re just firm and tight everywhere, aren’t you?” he asked in a fierce whisper, sweat beading as he moved into a rhythm.

Lydia lifted her body to meet his, letting him do as he liked, but he felt her following along. When her fingernails dug into his sides, he winced even as he felt her pulsing around him. His name came out on an exhale that was well worth the wounds he’d have tomorrow.

“What an excellent student you are. Now it’s the teacher’s turn,” he said, lifting her hips in his hands, thrusting vigorously until he finally found blessed relief in the woman in his arms. Afterwards, his heart was racing. He lowered his forehead to hers and brought arms on either side of her to hold her.

“Again,” Lydia ordered, the demand ringing like a bell in the room where the only sounds were the two of them panting from exertion.

Morrie burst out laughing. “Where were you when I was sixteen? I have to have a nap these days just to recover from foreplay. You’re a very intense woman.”

“You need to build your endurance,” Lydia said, tracing his shoulders with her nails.

Morrie kissed her neck, moving from side to side, nudging his way deeper or at least making them both aware of their physical connection. “Give me one good reason to sweat at anything other than this particular activity.”

“You’re the first man I’ve ever wanted this way, and I can already tell I’m going to need to make up for lost time,” Lydia said.

“I guess I’ll buy some vitamins tomorrow. Maybe I’ll have a discreet conversation with Regina about some aids,” Morrie said, feeling Lydia freeze in his arms. “What?”

“Do we have to tell her about this?” Lydia asked.

Morrie laughed and rolled them to their sides. “Not if you don’t want to yet.”

He’d wait and tell Lydia tomorrow that pretty much everyone was going to guess when they saw them together. Intimacy carried its own vibe.

“I bet you’d have been a lot braver if you’d gone to Princeton like you wanted. All those hippies there were probably having orgies and smoking pot. You might have even met Regina there at some alumni function when she went. She still speaks there all the time.”

“Oh sure. That would have done it. Maybe I would have been as loose with men as Alexa Ranger before she got married,” Lydia said on a laugh.

She put her cheek against his chest, cushioning her face against his heartbeat, thinking of how crazy it was that she had never done this with any other man in her entire life.

“I must have really been bad to live with as a role model. My daughter picked two of the most notorious women in town for best friends. Can you believe that?” Lydia asked tiredly.

“I try not to judge anyone else’s journey. Life is challenging enough,” Morrie said, closing his eyes.

“You’re way too good for me, Morrison Fox,” Lydia said softly.

“Not true. You’re my perfect shiksa goddess. And I swear on all that is holy, no woman of any age has a better ass than yours. . .” Morrison declared, his words drifting off as he fell asleep.

Lydia listened for a minute to his soft snoring. Tomorrow she was looking up what that term meant. It didn’t sound very good, and Morrie was always calling her that.

Then when he wasn’t teasing, he was quoting poetry or talking about wine. He was a strange man—a strange but wonderful man. If there was a right amount of patience and demand, Morrie personified it.

She patted his chest one last time and pulled a pillow down under her head to sleep again. Darkness came even more quickly to claim her than it had earlier. The last thought she had was that she couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt so relaxed.

Chapter 24

 

“Good morning,” Morrie said, frowning at her dressed body and full make-up. She had obviously been up for quite a while. “You weren’t there when I woke up. I was worried.”

Lydia turned from the coffee maker with a cup in her hand. She had started pouring when she heard footsteps echoing in the hall. The man was grumpy until completely awake.

“I didn’t mean to worry you. I just got up to do my workout routine. I’m not used to getting so much sleep,” Lydia said as sweetly as she could manage. She was way out of practice being nice to a man in the morning.

Walking to where Morrie stood still frowning at her, she held out the cup of steaming liquid fixed the way she’d learned he liked it. His bare feet and shirt tail hanging out caused the same flutter in her they always did. His casual state of dress was so
settled in
, she decided, unable to find better words. He looked like he belonged in her kitchen dressed just that way.

“Drink this and then talk to me,” she ordered, making sure his hand was gripped on the cup before she let go.

“Thanks. I’d rather have a good morning kiss and some indication that you don’t hate me,” Morrie said succinctly.

He studied her face for signs of upset, getting a bit angry when he found none. It meant she had intentionally left him to wake up alone. He couldn’t decide if it was amusement about it crinkling her face or the strain of searching for a polite reply. Both irritated him. He’d expected to wake up to a grateful woman instead of an empty bed.

“Drink. You’re not making sense yet. Why in the world would I hate you?” Lydia asked, turning her cheek up and pointing to it with her finger, laughing when Morrie’s very strong fingers gripped her chin.

His mouth coming down hard on hers shocked her a little too. But it was also nice to know Morrie still felt that way about her even after last night. Guess that answered one of her questions, Lydia decided.

The other one she had was a little more complicated.

“Last night was fine. Today is my concern. How much is the fact that I’m not Jewish a problem for you?” Lydia demanded.

“Why? Are you worried about being accused of fornication and being stoned in the town square? I’m pretty sure Falls Church doesn’t do that anymore. Otherwise, I’d be dead already,” Morrie said, irritated to hear “last night was fine.” It was more than fine.

“Are you ever going to be capable of having a simple, serious conversation when I ask you a direct question?” Lydia demanded, going to the island and sliding up a stool.
