“Can we get to-go orders? I’m more tired than I thought.”

“Sure, hon.” Chauncey wrapped a large arm around Curtis’s shoulder, making him feel safe from the world. Curtis practically burrowed into Chauncey’s side as he drank his smoothie. Steven came out of the kitchen, taking their orders as Curtis tried his best not to look to his right.

Once the food was cooked and brought out, Curtis damn near ran from the diner. He didn’t want to spend one more second in there than he had to.

“Slow down, hon.” Chauncey grabbed Curtis around his waist with one hand as Curtis headed for the door. He didn’t want to slow down. Curtis wanted to get back to his crappy new apartment and just crawl into bed with his mate. He wanted his bear to wrap his body around him and give Curtis all the warmth and protection he needed right now.

“Just tired.”

Chauncey was looking at him strangely now. Curtis cast his eyes downward as he waited for Chauncey to release him. “Okay, but slow down.”

Curtis nodded as his mate removed his arm. He headed for the door at a slower pace, pulling it open as he stepped out into the street.

A street that didn’t have Billy on it. As they passed the big pane of glass, he saw Billy watching him once again. Curtis stomach was in knots as he walked back home with his bear.

He dropped down into one of the kitchen chairs, thankful to be off of his feet. Curtis really was tired. The day had been long and exhausting. Chauncey pulled their Styrofoam containers from the plastic bag, utensils included, and opened Curtis’s for him. “Dig in, hon.”

Curtis didn’t have much of an appetite anymore, but he made himself eat half of what his mate had bought. He tried his best not to let his unnerving show, but he could tell Chauncey wasn’t buying it.

Thank goodness his mate didn’t ask again.

They ate in relative silence. The tension was so thick that Curtis felt it choking him. He pushed his container aside. “I’m full.” Chauncey nodded, watching him closely as he closed the lid on his as well. “If you want me to go home, just ask, hon.” Curtis gaped at his mate. That was the last thing he wanted Chauncey to do. “Why would you say that?” Chauncey took his container over to the trash where he deposited it, and then washed his hands in the kitchen sink. Curtis watched his every move, wondering how he was going to get out of this. He didn’t like the disappointed look in his mate’s eyes. They had been having a great day, minus the exhausting work, but even that had been fun with his mate at his side. The only thing that had hampered his day was the sighting of Billy.

“I’m going to crash on the couch,” Chauncey said and left the kitchen before Curtis could say a word.

Fuck!

Nero reached over and cut the volume down on the monitor screen. He didn’t like to hear couples argue. He knew the bear wasn’t going anywhere for the night, so he concentrated on the other monitors.

They had seemed like such a nice mated pair. Nero didn’t know anything about bears, but Chauncey had that look in his eyes. The look that said Curtis was his world. He didn’t understand what they were arguing about, but he knew for a fact Curtis was hiding something.

Nero wiped the monitoring station down with disinfectant wipes as he pushed the arguing pair from his mind.

Chauncey woke when he felt his mate crawl behind him. He wasn’t sure what was wrong with Curtis. He had feared that his mate didn’t want him there, but his body language was telling a different story. If Curtis didn’t want to talk about what was wrong with him, Chauncey wouldn’t push him, although it bothered the hell out of him.

He wrapped an arm around his mate, pulling him to lie in front.

Curtis buried his face into Chauncey’s chest as they lay there in silence.

“I’m here for you.”

Curtis nodded but didn’t remove his head from lying against Chauncey’s chest. He hugged his mate tighter as he sighed. This mating thing wasn’t as easy as he had envisioned it to be. Chauncey thought that his winning personality would make having a mate a breeze. Boy was he wrong. It was the opposite, and that sucked. He wasn’t sure what to do or say, especially considering he didn’t know what the hell was wrong with his mate. He wasn’t a mind reader.

He grinned when he felt his mate’s hand slide down his chest and cup his cock through his underwear. Maybe Curtis had been shy about spending the night together alone. Chauncey had thought he would be cool now that they got their first time out of the way. Maybe he had been wrong about that.

He seemed to be wrong about a lot of things lately.

“And what does my honey bunny want?” He could feel Curtis laughing. His entire body shook as he pulled back. “Your what?”

It was finally Chauncey’s turn to blush. “You don’t like that name?” Chauncey liked that name. He may be big and fierce looking, but when it came to his mate, he felt all warm and gooey on the inside. Kind of like a candy bar.

“No, no. I like it, but…isn’t that for a girl?” Chauncey chuckled as he rolled to his back, setting his mate up on his groin. Fuck if Curtis didn’t look good perched on top of him. “No, it’s an endearment for couples, and we’re a couple.”

“Oh,” Curtis said. His mate bit his bottom lip as he glanced down at him. It seemed they both had the same idea. Chauncey inhaled sharply when Curtis stood on the couch and lowered his boxers. Hell if that wasn’t a glorious sight. His cock sprung free, making Chauncey’s mouth water.

Curtis sat back down, rubbing his ass over Chauncey’s hard-as-fuck cock. Chauncey squirmed around, letting his shaft rub up and down Curtis’s crease. “You still haven’t told me what you want.” Curtis placed his hands on Chauncey’s chest, smiling down at him. “You’re gonna make me say it aloud, aren’t you?”

“Hell yeah. I want to hear how dirty my mate can talk.” Chauncey prayed Curtis didn’t chicken out. He needed in the worst way and wanted to hear his mate vocalize everything he wanted Chauncey to do to him.

He was a perv, sue him.

“I’ve never talked dirty before,” Curtis admitted as he rubbed his ass into Chauncey’s groin. He could see his mate was willing but unsure of what to say, so Chauncey took the lead.

“Tell me what you want me to do with you.”

Curtis giggled as he ran his hands over Chauncey’s chest. “I want you to fuck me.”

Grr.
“And what else, hon?”

Curtis looked at him questioningly. “What else is there?”

“Oh hell. You have no idea, do you?” Chauncey asked as he reached behind his mate and pulled his underwear free, hanging onto Curtis as he kicked them the rest of the way off. He spread his legs, pushing his mate a little further back.

“No, I don’t.”

Chauncey was hard as a brick as he scooted his mate down just a little further. “How about you suck my cock?” When Curtis stiffened, averting his eyes, Chauncey stopped all movement. He wasn’t going to force his mate to do anything he didn’t want to do. Maybe Curtis didn’t like sucking cock. Or maybe he thought Chauncey was too big. He wasn’t sure, but he had to get that troubled look off of his mate’s face.

“Hey.” Chauncey reached up, tucking a knuckle under Curtis’s chin, bringing his face back around. “Why don’t you tell me what you want, hon. Okay?”

Curtis nodded, reaching down until his hand touched the floor, and then brought the bottle of lube up and sat it on Chauncey’s chest.

“Make love to me.”

Chauncey wasn’t sure what was going on, but he was willing to do whatever it took to replace that distant look with one of pleasure.

He lubed his fingers and then pulled Curtis close, making his mate lie across his chest. He took his mate’s lips in a gentle kiss as his fingers delved into his mate’s entrance. Curtis moaned as Chauncey prepped him for his invasion. An expression of lust gleamed in Curtis’s grassy-green eyes when Chauncey broke the kiss. He lubed his cock and then grabbed Curtis’s sides, lifting his mate and then watching in wonder as Curtis took over, impaling himself onto Chauncey’s shaft.

“You look like a god sitting up there.”

Curtis groaned and then smiled down at him. His mate grabbed the back of the couch with one hand and then began to ride him.

Chauncey watched as Curtis’s stomach muscles quivered, his thigh muscles bulged and flexed. He was going to come just by the way his mate twitched!

Chauncey jackknifed, pulling Curtis down with him as he devoured his mouth, snapping his hips along the way. He drove his cock deep, trying to bury it inside of his mate. Curtis cried out as Chauncey snapped his hips harder, feeling his orgasm building to an epic proportion.

“Come for me, honey bun.” He jerked his hips faster, the tightness of his mate’s ass driving him mad. Chauncey used the friction to bring his mate off without touching him once. Curtis shouted Chauncey’s name, making his ego grow by leaps and bounds as he felt wetness between them.

“I’m about to come in your ass, baby,” Chauncey warned as he threw his head back, letting out a loud growl. His canines descended as his body exploded. He didn’t hesitate when he felt Curtis push his neck into his teeth. Chauncey sank them deep, cutting through flesh as he laid his claim once more.

Nero splayed his fingers, checking to see if the intimate scene was over yet. When he saw the couple fast asleep on the couch, he shut the monitor off. He sat there for a minute, tapping his fingers on the station before racing from the room to find his mate, Gunnar.

Maybe he shouldn’t have put a camera in the living room either.

He wasn’t too sure about Mark’s “big plan” on keeping an eye on his son. He was quite sure the tattooed human would be chewing nails if he saw what was actually taking place.

Yeah, tomorrow he was going to go over to Curtis’s apartment and remove the camera from the living room. The only place left was the kitchen.

“Please don’t let them have sex there, too.”

Curtis walked into Murphy’s bookstore with the job-listings section of the newspaper tucked under his arm. If he was going to keep his apartment, which was the last thing he wanted to do, he was going to need a job, something to help pay his bills.

Chauncey had to get back to his ranch. He said there was too much to do, and he was going to get his ass kicked by his pa if he didn’t get his day’s worth of work done. Curtis chuckled at the fear in his bear’s eyes when he spoke of Mr. Lakeland. It was truly comical.

“Curtis,” Murphy, one of the mates who happened to be half wolf, half human, greeted him. Murphy had always been nice to Curtis, although Curtis suspected he was a little nutty.

“Hey, Murph. I came to apply for the assistant job,” Curtis said as he walked over to the glass-encased counter. He sat the paper down, looking around to see quite a few people inside the small bookstore.

“Oh, thank goodness. I’ve had a bunch of college kids apply that wouldn’t know a hardcover book if it smacked them in the head.” Murphy waved his hand around the shop as he walked over to stand by Curtis. “Ever since I opened a cyber café on the other side of the bookstore, I can’t seem to keep up. Tell me you know how to make espressos.”

Curtis could feel his face heat up as he shook his head. “Sorry. But I’m a pretty fast learner.”

Murphy eyed him for a moment before sighing. “Then I’ll teach you. I would rather have pack working here than some college kid who is only interested in sex and his newest Android phone.”

Curtis was about to point out that he was college age and loved sex now, but he closed his mouth. He really did need the job. If he was to prove that he was independent, then he needed to keep that lousy apartment. He still couldn’t get over the fact that the pipes rattled every time someone took a shower in the building. At two in the morning, it was unnerving. Although he had Chauncey with him, it still spooked him.

“Let me show you the ropes so I can get back to the book side of things,” Murphy said as he led Curtis to the other side of the bookstore and behind a counter that held a large coffee machine and bottles of liquid flavorings. He prayed he hadn’t gotten in over his head. He was relieved when Murphy handed him a cheat sheet on how to make all the different flavored coffees.

“The pumpkin-spice lattes are in season, and everyone has been ordering them like mad. Maybe we should start with that one.” After about an hour, Curtis was no closer to getting half the orders correct. Murphy continually reassured him that he would get the hang of things. He did get the seasoned drink down pat though. Curtis chatted and laughed, getting to know a few of the customers as the day pushed on.

It wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be. Curtis liked working at Murphy’s. He grinned widely as his mate strolled through the door.

Chauncey grunted at a few college men who had been sitting at the counter, chatting away with Curtis. He thought it funny when his mate leaned over the counter, cupped his face, and staked his claim.

Oddly enough, that only made more of the guys come over to the counter. Now it was Curtis’s turn to grunt. He didn’t like the men giving his mate so much attention. Chauncey chuckled as he took a seat, a shitty-ass grin on his face. “Don’t like turned tables, do ya?”

“Not one bit.” Curtis pouted.

“You know I only want you, honey bunny, right?” Curtis growled when a few people snickered. He wasn’t used to public displays. For Chauncey, he would get used to it real quick. But the “honey bunny” part was going to take some getting used to. Like ten years.

Curtis grabbed a cup to make another coffee, sticking his tongue out at his mate as he did so. Just as he turned around to tease Chauncey some more, he spotted Billy walking into the bookstore.

Chapter Six

Chauncey looked over his shoulder to see who Curtis was staring at. He saw a redhead standing over by the counter on the other side of the bookstore and wondered who he was. The guy was eyeing his mate awfully hard.

“Friend of yours?” he asked Curtis as he turned back around.

Curtis cast his eyes downward quickly, shaking his head. “Just someone I knew years ago.”

Chauncey grunted, looking once more over his shoulder. The redhead had moved on, perusing the books, but Chauncey caught the flicker of glances he was tossing their way. His jaw clenched as he glimpsed back at his mate. Curtis was doing the same thing. Okay, he’d had enough. “Is there something you need to tell me?” Cheating was a deal breaker in Chauncey’s book. There was no way he was going to tolerate it. He wanted to go over to the redhead and smash his face into the bookshelf.
