In a meeting with Chervonenko in early June, he praised Khrushchev' s speech in Paris on May 16, which had "explained the soundness of the position of the countries of the socialist camp led by the Soviet Union." Deng added that he had not yet heard Mao's opinion, since the chairman was absent from Beijing.
