He caressed her breast lovingly, tweaking the nipple slightly, but it was enough to elicit a gasp of pain. “I noticed the changes in your body—it’s not exactly something you can hide when we’re naked most of the time—and tonight I saw your hand hovering over your belly protectively.”
“And of course, it had nothing to do with the fact that she had a checkup with her doctor earlier today,” Katarnia teased.
“Well, that was a pretty big clue, too,” he said with an unrepentant grin. But then his smile faded and his expression grew serious. “We love you, Deanna.” Jaegan got off his knees and beckoned for Katarnia and Luddeke to join them. He pulled all three of them into his arms, cradling Deanna protectively, as Katarnia leaned over to kiss her.
“Thank you,” Katarnia said as she pulled away, unexpected tears blurring her vision. “Thank you for letting me be a part of it.”
“Hey,” Luddeke said, wrapping his arms around her, “you always have and always will be an equal partner in this marriage. Our babies are going to be loved by all four of their parents.”
“Exactly,” Jaegan said, touching Katarnia’s face softly.
“Good to know,” Deanna said with a secretive smile, “because I think I’m going to need some help.”
“Help?” Katarnia asked breathlessly. Please don’t let there be anything wrong with the woman she loved or the child she carried.
Deanna must have seen her panic, because she reached up and pressed a kiss to Katarnia’s lips.
“Sorry, sweetie,” she said with a serious expression. “Everything’s fine with me and the babies.”
“Babies?” three voices all seemed to ask at once.
Deanna blushed again and Katarnia nearly laughed at the stunned expressions on their tredella’s and tredellabina’s faces.
“Three babies, actually,” Deanna said with a shy smile.
“Th–Three?” Jaegan asked, looking like he’d seen a ghost.
“Three,” Deanna confirmed with a wide grin. And then she turned to Katarnia, kissed her softly, and said, “None of whom would have existed if it hadn’t been for you. I love you, Kat, more than I ever believed possible. Thank you for bringing me into your family.”
“I love you,” Katarnia whispered as she marveled again at the pure and genuine love these three people had for her and for each other. Descon might have been happy with triad marriages, but Deanna proved every single day that she was worth changing the rules for.
Katarnia glanced at the matching, deep blue symbols painted onto the skin of all four of them. Deanna’s mubellabina claiming ceremony had only been a few months ago, but in some ways also felt like a long time ago. The four of them had quickly found a comfortable balance in their relationship.
Maybe in a few years their marriage wouldn’t be so unusual. With the changes to the law the kings had made at Jaegan and Luddeke’s request, maybe Descon would see more unions like theirs. In fact, now that the search for partners for the human women was no longer restricted to “incomplete” triads, she knew the exact three men to introduce Deanna’s friend, Jenelle, to.
Katarnia smiled, her heart swelling with love as her family broke away from the cuddle and went about making dinner. Even the most routine of actions seemed so much more important when one was truly loved. Two husbands, a wife, a home full of love, and now three babies on the way…
Life could never be better.
