“You hacked into the human government?” one of the elders gasped. Bird elder maybe? “Dear gods, why?” Nice that they skipped over all that other stuff. I noticed then how many extra guards were in the room. Either they always came when Parliament had visitors or us being there brought them, but there were two dozen at least.

“To get something we thought you would want in case you ever needed leverage over the humans,” Seattle explained as he nodded to me. I pulled out the original thumb drive that Milwaukee had given back to me. “We went to finish what we thought our parents were working on for you.”

“We told you to drop that—” the wolf elder started to growl.

But Seattle kept right on going. “And found out that every human government around the world knows about us.” There were several gasps in the room… Just not from any of the elders. How was it possible that guards trained to not show emotion or react to anything let gasps slip out but the elders all didn’t even flinch?

“They’re planning a worldwide attack against us in almost three months to wipe us out,” Boston continued. “The proof is on here.” I tossed the thumb drive onto the table. “They’re going to start taking out paranormals in government positions and the military in under two months though we came upon some Air Force officers starting early on some owls after they were told.”

“Does the NSA know you have this?” the cat elder asked, sounding almost panicked at the idea… At the idea the NSA could know it was us who had the information. Not about the information. Something was wrong and I was missing a piece.

Seattle shrugged, glancing at Boston, probably feeling something was off as we all did. “They’ve put out a BOLO with pictures, but the last we heard, they didn’t know our names or—”

“We didn’t say we broke into the NSA,” I blurted out, figuring out that missing piece. “We said the government. How did you know it was the NSA? Mom worked for Homeland Security. You sent her in there to get information after you got audited.” My malamute practically whimpered as I felt waves of what I could only think to classify as guilt coming off everyone sitting at the table. “My gods—you already knew.”

The wolf elder shot up and slammed his hand on the table. “That is an
outrageous
accusation!” I was only half listening, instead staring intently at a button that popped off his shirt at the swift motion—revealing part of his chest with his animated gestures as he continued. “You cannot just waltz in here and—”

“Why isn’t your crystal glowing?” I blurted when I figured out why I was fascinated with the older man’s chest. His part of the sacred crystal was showing. I spun around, my eyes darting between Aurelo and Seattle since they were the oldest. “Aren’t they supposed to glow? Mom and Dad said they always did when in the right elder’s possession.”

“They are and they flare up when they use the gifts the crystal brings them,” Aurelo hissed. “Why are none of you wearing them
outside
your shirts like the last time I visited the PP?”

It was Try, the elf, who answered, “The elders said flaunting their power was wrong and decided about six months ago to start tucking them in their shirts.”

“Because they stopped
working
,” I accused, narrowing my eyes at our leaders when I turned back to face them. “You sold your people out to the humans and you lost the right to lead. What was the price?”

“That’s
enough
of this,” the cat elder snarled. He motioned the guards closer and I realized we were all going down.

I launched myself into Aurelo’s arms, catching Julus and Seattle doing the same out of the corner of my eye. “I love you, now and forever. Mist. You know what to do.”

“Don’t ask me to leave you, my love,” he choked out, clutching me tightly.

“Detain these men for their treasonous accusations while we investigate what they have found,” one of the elders ordered. “Is this the only copy?”

“Yes, we didn’t want it to fall into the wrong hands so we didn’t duplicate it,” Boston answered quickly before anyone else could. Right, because if the PP were working with the humans, then they could inform them we knew before we had a chance to warn others. “There might be certain tracks to cover up, but we didn’t tell anyone other than Julus and Aurelo when we called for their help to escape.”

My brother was so damn smart. I would
never
have thought to cover all that. I mean, in a few sentences, he managed to not tip them off to warn the humans, give the PP reason to keep us alive for questioning,
and
make sure Director Fabian wasn’t implicated in this.

Fucking
genius
.

“You can’t save us if you’re detained in their cells,” Seattle mumbled to Julus so only we could hear. “They have that electrical charge so you can’t mist. You
know
this, Julus.”

“I love you always, Seattle. Don’t you dare die on me. You stay alive until we bring back help.”

“Just warn the others and we’ll be fine. They need us after what Boston just told them.”

I nodded for Aurelo to do the same. He mashed his lips down to mine and I put every ounce of what I felt for him in that kiss—until I was ripped away from him. Tears gathered in my eyes, as they did his, and then he misted. I saw Julus do the same, and in a flash, they were gone.

“Sorry, elders, they got away,” Try apologized, and my malamute could tell that he wasn’t sorry
at all
. “We’ll start a manhunt for them.”

“You do that,” the wolf elder snapped. “This is of the highest priority. We can’t have them running their mouths and starting a mass panic over what might be nothing.” Then the man was suddenly in front of me. “Where did they go?”

An idea hit me and I felt my heart swarm with hope. “Do you promise not to kill them on sight?”

“You have my word as an elder.” I didn’t need my extra sense to know the man was lying through his teeth.

I sighed in relief as if I believed him. “My parents’ cabin in the mountains. That was where we were going to meet if something happened and we got separated.”

“Chicago,
no
!” Seattle exclaimed, catching on to what I was doing and playing the part. “They’ll kill them! You just signed their death sentences.”

“Take them away and send tactical teams to that cabin!” Another elder bit out.

The guards dragged us out of there, instinct making us fight them. Then when we were downstairs and I saw the cages we were to be held in I really started struggling. I didn’t want to be trapped and my malamute
really
didn’t want it, clawing at me to shift and run.

“Wait, I want to kiss the hot elf before I die,” Milwaukee whimpered as he reached for Try.

“You guys aren’t going to die,” one of the guards scoffed. “The elders will verify what you found and you’ll be heroes. There’s some misunderstanding but they’re not in on it. We’ll get this all sorted out.”

I sensed most of the other guards didn’t share his opinion.

“Hey, don’t cock block, man,” Try growled, pulling Milwaukee into his arms. “I love hot little geeks that beg.”

“Whatever, horn dog.” The guy rolled his eyes as the rest of us were led into a large cell. I watched Milwaukee, trying to act as if I wasn’t so their interaction didn’t draw extra intention. I had a feeling this was about more than a kiss.

“You are so gorgeous,” Try groaned as he brushed his lips over my brother’s. “If we make it out of this, I’m going to want more than a kiss, you know.”

“That would be
horrible
for me.” Then he pulled Try’s head down, practically climbing up the massive elf. I felt bad for watching such an intimate moment but it paid off when Milwaukee grabbed Try’s hand as if in passion.

Except there was a flash drive in it.

Try was smooth, not reacting in the slightest. He tucked it in his jeans on the way to moving his hand to Milwaukee’s ass. “I will speak with the elders and investigate what you gave them. Fear not, my little geek. We will have more than this and soon.”

“I’ll hold you to that. I want to nibble on your sexy ears as you take me,” my brother breathed before blushing at his admission. Then he untangled himself from Try and practically darted into the cell with us.

“They are being detained because of the volatile nature of the situation,” Try informed the guards, his tone harsh and brooking no argument. “They are not prisoners or enemies of the PP. Treat them as such. Make sure they are fed and whatever else they need is brought to them.”

“Should we take away their phones?” One of the guys asked as he eyed us suspiciously. “They could have been lying to the elders about others knowing.”

“Do you
doubt
our leaders?” Try snapped. “They would have known if the Niskas were lying, you fool.”

Lightbulb! He knew we
had been
and the elders didn’t catch us. That meant what I said about the crystals no longer working for them was true. That was why he was instantly on our side.

“Let them keep their phones. We don’t want to draw suspicion by anyone who might wonder as to their disappearance. I will personally check the messages and the cells are monitored with cameras.” The guard gave a firm nod and went off to get us snacks, I guessed. Try turned to Seattle and Boston, his eyes shooting to different areas that I assumed was his way of telling us where the cameras were.

“We know the rules, Try.” Seattle plopped on the cot and ran his fingers through his hair. “We won’t be a problem. Please, just do whatever you can to make sure they don’t hurt Julus. I begged him to run. I dragged him into this. He doesn’t know much besides we found a human plot against the PP.”
