“You wouldn’t dare!” Miles yelled at her. Everyone froze in place, waiting for the darkness that would come the instant her finger touched that screen.

But her finger did not descend. Instead, she slowly lowered the phone and then answered, “No, Daddy, I wouldn’t.” A slight sob escaped her, but she pulled back from actually crying. “I’m not like you, Daddy. I wouldn’t cause millions of innocent people to suffer just so I could get my way.”

She threw the phone to the ground at her feet and walked up to stand in front of her father.

She spoke softly, but firmly. “Neil and I are leaving now. You have the power to stop us, but if you do, you will lose me forever. I know he will never be rich like you are and can’t give me all the fancy things that you’ve always promised me. But he can give me one thing that you can’t. He can give me love.”

Neil had come up beside her and was ready to step between her and her father to protect her if necessary.

“I think it’s time for us to leave,” she said to Neil. As they went to retrieve Neil’s bike, she turned back to face her father, “Tell Momma I love her,” she said quietly. Then she leaned forward and gave him a kiss on the forehead. “I love you, too, Daddy, but your Little Princess has grown up. If you accept me as Raina, you’ll still have a daughter to love.”

As she got onto the bike behind Neil, she said. “If not...” and they rode off, leaving Miles to listen to the noise of the motor fade into the quiet of the Texas night.
