“Run where?”

“Does it matter as long as we’re together?”

“No.”

Ames opened the door of the car. “Then get in an’ slide over. I’ll drive. Maybe we’re doin’ right. Maybe we’re doin’ wrong. I don’t know. Like I told you the other day, this thing is too big for me. I don’t know what’s right, what’s wrong. All I know is I love you. So I’m goin’ to stop thinkin’ an’ feel.”

His arms firm and strong around her, the night lost most of its terror. It was neither so black nor so huge, and Dona was no longer afraid. This thing was no bigger than they were. Somehow, they would meet it.

Ames drove swiftly and expertly down the dark country road into Blairville. The deserted courthouse square was bathed in moonlight. Ames drove around the square, turned down a shabby side street and parked in front of a white frame building in which a lamp was burning.

Still holding the book he’d been reading, Father Miller came to the door and peered at them over his glasses. “Yes?”

“We want to be married,” Ames said. “Now. Tonight. I got the license this afternoon. Or would you rather not perform the ceremony? If so, we’ll drive on.”

The aged priest made the sign of his faith. His voice was as gentle as his smile. “‘Male and female created He them.’” Father Miller opened the door still wider. “Come in, my children. I’ve been expecting you.”
