“Jack.”

He smiled down at her. “What?”

“You are incorrigible.”

“I know.” He kissed her gently on the mouth. “I'm only talking so much because I'm terrified you haven't actually said yes.”

“To what?”

“To marrying me, to loving me for the rest of your life and keeping me in my place.”

She took in a deep, shuddering breath. “Oh, that.” She patted his cheek. “Will you let me up?”

“Not until you answer me.”

“I'm not convinced everything will work out quite as well as you believe. What on earth will we do about George?”

“The logistics don't matter.” He shoved a hand through his hair. “I love you.”

Her smile was beautiful. “You see, that wasn't so hard to say, was it?”

“I've never said it before and meant it.” He swallowed hard. “Now I think I'm the one who wants to be sick.”

She climbed off his lap and straightened her crumpled gown. Her hair was falling down, her eyes were red from crying, and yet she'd never looked more beautiful to him.

“I love you, Jack.”

For a heartbeat, her image blurred in front of him and he hastily blinked. “Good, then.” He managed to get off the floor and offered her his arm. “Are you ready to face them with the good news of your upcoming marriage?”

She gave him a severe look. “I haven't agreed to that yet.”

He flung the door open and escorted her through it. “Oh, but you definitely will.”
