I pressed my fingertips to hers. Her slender fingers slipped between mine, sliding down to clasp the back of my hand. I returned the gentle pressure of her fingers.
The ritual words came easily to my lips. "My life for yours, Raimurri. Until we reach Djefre, my life for yours."

I.
A thousand years ago, I broke the world. I reached for the powers of
ma
and
wë
and wielded them until earth met sky, and fire became one with water. My enemies cursed my name. Chimawë, Destroyer of Worlds, they called me. But my people, for even then I thought of them as my people, revered me.
When the time came for me to pass from the world, the
mawë
I summoned could not be dispelled. In this way, I became one with the world. I live in the sweet breath of wind that touches the skin before a summer storm, and the rustling of the leaves as the wind passes; in the smell of wet earth and the taste of rain in the air; in the laughter of children playing in the fields, and the sweat of the blacksmith at his forge.
The land is called
Eriyu, now, and I no longer walk its paths. My people have grown and prospered. Their hopes and dreams come to me like scents on the wind. I watch over them and guide them from the world beyond. A select few among them listen for my call and answer in the depths of their souls. These are my Judicars who guard the world in my stead.
Kary English grew up in the snowy Midwest where she avoided both siblings and frostbite by reading book after book in a warm corner behind a recliner chair. She blames her one and only high school detention on Douglas Adams, whose
Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy
caused her to laugh out loud while reading it behind her geometry textbook.
Today, Kary still spends most of her time with her head in the clouds and her nose in a book. To the great relief of her parents, she seems to be making a living at it. Her fiction includes several short stories, a planetary fantasy novel forthcoming in 2014, and a fantasy saga about a little girl and an orange kitten. A student of New York Times bestsellers David Farland and Tracy Hickman, Kary hopes that her own work will someday be considered detention-worthy.
In addition to her works on Kindle,
Kary's fiction has appeared in
Grantville Gazette's Universe Annex

An ancient cataclysm. A mystical order. And a little girl with a kitten.
Ailsa Farthane tried to keep her truth-sight a secret, but no one can keep a secret from the Judicars. Now two of them have arrived in Ailsa's village, and they want to take her away to become a Judicar herself. If Ailsa goes with them, she will have to leave her parents, her only friend and her treasured orange kitten behind. Though she's just eight years old, Ailsa knows three things about Judicars: they can see the Truth, they never lie, and their magic is older than the mountains that guard her country's borders.
