Pryce-Jones, 38. This was not the first production featuring the story of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, nor would it be the last. American television had been the first to produce a one-hour drama,
The Woman I Love
, starring Richard Chamberlain as the duke and Faye Dunaway as Wallis. In the fall of 1972, the play
Crown Matrimonial
opened in London at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket. Written by Royce Ryton, it starred Wendy Hiller as Queen Mary, Peter Barkworth as Edward VIII, and Andrew Ray as the duke of York. Wallis did not appear as a character in the play, but her archrival the Duchess of York did, played by Amanda Reiss. In October 1973 actress Phyllis Calvert took over the role of Queen Mary, while actor John Frasier assumed that of the King. Interestingly, both Andrew Ray and Amanda Reiss would reprise their roles as the Duke and Duchess of York in the Thames TV series
Edward and Mrs. Simpson
, reflecting something of a career association with the royals for Ray, who, as a child, had appeared as “Wheeler,” the boy in the film
The Mudlark.
In 1978 a play called
The Woman I Love by
Dan Sutherland opened at the Churchill Theatre, Bromley Kent, starring Martin Jarvis as David, Holly Palance as Wallis, Ellen Pollock as Queen Mary, and Robert Beatty as Lord Beaverbrook. The last production before Wallis’s death in which she was featured was the 1983 film
To Catch a King,
based on the Windsors’ experiences in Portugal in 1940 and starring John Standing and Barbara Parkins as the Duke and Duchess. In April 1988, Jane Seymour and Anthony Andrews played Wallis and David in the CBS Television
production The Woman He Loved,
written by Tony Award-winning playwright William Luce. The program aired to good reviews and won for its time period.
