Alan Duff was born in Rotorua in 1950 and now lives in Havelock North. He has published two previous novels and a non-fiction work.

won the PEN Best First Book for Fiction Award and was runner-up in the 1990 Goodman Fielder Wattie Book Awards. In 1991 he was awarded the Frank Sargeson Fellowship.
