Chapter Forty-Four

Adonnis

After separating from Wise and Carter, I went back to the room and called my homeboy, Catfish, to come and pick me up. I needed to get out for the night and relax my mind, because the way that Carter was carrying shit had me pissed the fuck off. Never have I ever been treated like a bitch-made ass nigga and there wasn’t no consequences for it. These up north niggas were way different than me.

I was only sticking around off the strength of Carter. I fucked with the nigga the long way. Over the years that I’ve known him, he became the brother that I never had, and I had his back a thousand percent. I’ll be glad when we get this shit over with though, so I could go back to my regular ass life, without the fuck shit.

Catfish tapped my shoulder, snapping me out of my thoughts, passing me the blunt. I took a deep pull and held the smoke in, then I passed the blunt back to him.

“So what the fuck you doing in my city nigga? Last time I saw yo’ ass, was in feds joint when we was running that ma’fucka.” He chuckled, causing me to laugh as well.

They called him Detroit in the joint. Everybody used to try to fuck with him, until he snapped and bodied a nigga. Ever since, I took him under my wing and we ran everything through that ma’fucka- from cigarettes, to pills, to commissary for the last year of my bid.

I released the smoke, and shook my head. “Man, I came up here with my pot’nah, helping his people get some shit in order. But they wildin’. You know how I get down, bro. “ I eyed him knowingly.

“So it’s on that tip. Let me know if you need me to call in the crew and put in work. You know I owe you one, nigga.”

I shook my head from side to side. “Nah. You don’t owe me shit. I’m just a real nigga. When I do shit, I do it from the heart. I don’t be expecting shit in return.” I told him honestly. He was referring to the fact that when he caught that body in the joint, I had one of my niggas that was already serving three life sentences take the bid. It wasn’t shit to Dula though, he wasn’t ever seeing the light of day again anyways.

“Nah, fuck that. I still owe you one. Put me hip. Maybe me and my crew can help out.”

I thought about it for a second, maybe they could. “Alright, my homeboy’s people called us up here because of some beef with a cat named Jabari, and”

“Damn! I know you not talkin’ about the Jabari that ended up on the news.” His brows furrowed, and the look on his face had me feeling a certain way, but I didn’t let on.

I decided to switch the story up. Real gangsters moved in silence, and I was tripping. “Shit, I don’t know. We can’t find the nigga. We up here on a wild goose chase, and you know I’m from the A, so I don’t know nobody. I’m here on the strength of my pot’nah.” I lied

Catfish hit the blunt and passed it to me again. “Oh, I was about to say. That was lil’ cuz right there. His funeral Saturday. We think his baby mom’s had something to do with that shit. The family been trying to get her to come over, but she ain’t trying to hear it. Word is, she fucking around with my cousin’s homeboy named Wise with her scandalous ass.” I forgot how loose Catfish’s lips were, and all I could think about was getting the fuck away from his ass before some shit popped off. I had my piece on my waist just in case, but I was dipping as soon as we pulled up to the club.

“Damn, that’s fucked up, bro. Sorry to hear that. But, what club we going to. It betta’ be some fine hoes up in there. I need to release some of this stress.” I changed the subject, knowing I would never step foot in the club. I was halfway contemplating splitting Catfish’s wig open and dipping. I knew I had to call Carter with this shit.

Chapter Forty-Five

Sasha

Wise was really trying to play me like I wasn’t shit! I’ve called and I even rode past his house the night before, but he wasn’t there. I wasted too many years of my life catering to him for me to just walk away with nothing.

I let out a sigh as I lit my Newport and took in a puff. I was standing outside of the doctor’s office, waiting for Keem to pick me back up. He had came through for me way more than what I had expected him to do. I think that he was catching feelings. However, I knew that there could never be any future with us, due to the circumstances that we hooked up.

I didn’t trust his ass, and I really didn’t give a damn if he trusted me or not. I could honesty say that Wise treated him like a brother, yet he still turned on him. Shit, I had no hope whatsoever then.

After standing around for a few more minutes, Keem finally pulled up with some dude in the passenger seat. The guy looked familiar, but I couldn’t place his face. I was waiting for him to hop his happy ass in the backseat so that I could sit in the front, but both Keem and the stranger just sat there, staring at me like I was crazy.

Keem rolled down the window, and leaned over. “Girl, get yo’ ass in the car.” He muttered, using his head to gesture for me to get in the backseat.

I threw my cigarette down and let out a big huff. Disrespectful ass. Wise had never allowed me to sit in the backseat to no nigga. When I hopped into the car, I made sure to make my attitude known. I did a whole lot of lip smacking and huffing and puffing.

Keem’s eyes caught up with mine through the rearview mirror. “What the fuck is your problem, girl?”

“You,” I spat. “How I’m supposed to be your girl, pregnant, and you got me in the backseat like a random jump off.” Yes, my doctor confirmed that I was a whole nine weeks pregnant, now I was for sure that I was carrying Wise’s baby.

I hadn’t started having sex with Keem back then, Jabari was acting stingy with the dick, and that was around the time that I had caught Wise drunk after the club one night. I took full advantage of his drunken state, and rode him until he released all of his seeds inside of me.

A devilish grin spread across my face. I didn’t even give a fuck about the sorry ass niggas sitting in the front seat anymore. I was about to have Wise’s baby! Wise loved kids and Melanie had to be the reason that he loved Milan’s funky ass so much. Now he was going to have no choice but to love me just as much. I hoped that I was giving him a big ol’ healthy boy. I couldn’t wait to drop this thang, and for Wise to realize that I was carrying his child.

Laughter snapped me back to reality. My face frowned up instantly. “What the hell is so funny?” I asked.

“Calm down, lil’ momma. You too hype.” The stranger had a nerve to say. Who was he to speak to me? Why was Keem even allowing for him to do so?

I cocked my head to the side, staring at Keem. “Who is this negro. I think I’m a little lost here.”

Keem never responded, the next thing I knew, the stranger had a gun pointed at my head, and my heart fell to the pit of my stomach. I knew that my mouth was a little flip, but I hadn’t said nothing to warrant what was happening.

“You talk too fucking much, and ain’t saying shit.” Keem gritted, shaking his head. “I ain’t no stupid ass nigga. Yo’ ass trying to play both fields, bitch.” Keem gritted.

I looked from Keem, then to the man with the gun pointed at my head. “Wha… what you talking about?” I stuttered.

“You’s a scandalous bitch, and my dumbass was actually feeling you. Bitch, I read those text messages you done sent to Wise. All that singing and the nigga still don’t give a fuck about you.” Keem chuckled, and I immediately felt sick with worry, wondering what my fate was.

I had sent Wise a few texts about what Jabari and Keem were planning to do to him, and I had even called and told him. I was hoping that he would see my loyalty and  things would go back to normal. But, he never responded. Fuck! How could I be stupid enough to leave something so vital on my phone. How did I underestimate Keem?

Keem

Damn, I didn’t know that his crazy ass was gone whip the tool out on Sasha’s snake ass, but fuck it, I had to roll with the flow. She wasn’t shit anyways. She didn’t even know what she started. Now, the crew was acting funny as hell toward me, like I wasn’t part of the reason they were able to feed their families. I stopped by one of the spots to pick up some money and the little niggas told me Wise said he wasn’t fucking with me like that. How the fuck was they gone shut me out of my own shit?

I mean, I still had a couple of spots running, but everybody’s loyalty was to punk ass Wise. I knew I should have never sat back and let him take the lead. Shit was all fucked up now. I had the most foolproof plan! Nobody would have suspected me of shit!

“What you want to do, bossman? I say let’s off her ass.” Rod, one of the only loyal workers I had left, growled. Sasha was in the back seat snottin’ and crying. I knew she was scared as hell. She deserved that shit though. I was actually plotting on keeping it 100 with her scandalous ass now that Jabari was gone and Wise wasn’t fucking with her.

She knew how to play major roles to manipulate a nigga and I fell for that bullshit. “You can chill for right now. My homeboy wants to have a few words with her.” I told him, sneering through the rearview mirror at Sasha. She looked a little relieved. She just didn’t know, it wasn’t no relief for her ass.

After Jabari’s death, I had ran into a cat that I used to run with when I was a little nigga. I found out that he didn’t fuck with Wise and he wasn’t fucking with Milan either, because she was with Wise. Ontop of that, Carter had murked out one of his people years ago, so he was on some get back shit.

I told him that I was fucking around with Sasha, and she was supposed to be pregnant with Wise’s kid, so he wanted me to bring her to him. I was going to gladly hand her snake ass over and get rid of her.

“Keem, please don’t do this. I’m down for whatever. I swear to you.” Sasha pleaded. Her voice was trembling.

I looked back at her with disgust, I wanted to tell her ass to shut the fuck up, but when I focused on the road again, I realized that I was coming to a red light. I tried to smash on the brakes, but I was going too fast. Fuck it. I ended up blowing through the red light.

Two seconds later, the flashing red and blues made my fucking stomach bubble. We had guns, weed, my license was suspended, and that bitch Sasha was in the back on some bullshit. Fuck man! Should I take these ma’fuckas on a high speed chase? I’m not going to jail. I put that shit on everything I love.

Chapter Forty-Six

Carter

It was Adonnis, Selena, Wise, Milan, and myself sitting up in Hooters out in Auburn Hills, eating lunch, when Selena’s phone began to blow up. From the expression on her face as she spoke, I knew that whatever the person on the other end was saying couldn’t have been good news.

“Oh my God!” She shrieked, ending the call and placing her hand over her mouth.

Everyone looked at her with concern. I scooted closer, rubbing the small of her back. “What’s wrong, baby? You ok?” I asked.

She shook her head from side to side. “No, my cousin was in a fatal car accident. She was with some niggas that got into a high speed chase with the police.” Tears began to roll down her cheeks, as my forehead creased. She looked to Wise, “Sasha is in ICU and she’s pregnant, Wise. She’s pregnant with your baby and we have to go check on her.”

I saw the uncomfortable look on Wise’s face. I had forgotten that Wise was fucking with Selena’s cousin. Shit, all I knew was Milan. She was the only chick that I would ever call Sis.

“I love you Lena, but Wise won’t be going to no hospital to check on that broad. And I highly doubt that she is carrying his baby.” Milan answered for Wise. She was rolling her neck and everything. If the situation wasn’t so serious, I would have laughed. Females know they be territorial about their nigga.

I grabbed Selena’s hand and helped her wobble out of the seat. Her stomach was huge and she was so sexy all fat and pregnant. Or maybe it was because I appreciated her more for giving me my first seed.

“Nah, y’all don’t have to come. I’ll take you, babe.” I told Selena, focusing on Adonnis. “You want to go back to the hotel, or you rollin’ with us.”

He shrugged. “Nah, go handle that with ya’ lady. I’ll stay here and ride back to the hotel with Wise. You got yo’ shit on you?” He gave me a questioning glare.

“You already know it,” I answered. With that, both Selena and I headed out, going straight to the hospital.

***

Two hours later, I was sitting in the hospital’s waiting area, irritated as fuck. I knew that Selena was visiting her people, but I was ready to go. I let out a sigh, running my hand across my face. Then I relaxed back, scanning the room.

Damn, one face caught my eye in particular. I never forgot a face, especially the face of an enemy. I saw him, but he didn’t see me. My face tightened as I watched him disappear through a set of doors. In my head, I was thinking about how the fuck I was going to get at the nigga without catching a charge. Ten years and I still hated the nigga just as much!

My mind drifted to the day my best friend was murdered. I was twenty back then. Some old head got mad that we had took over the streets with an iron fist, holding the Westside down. He called himself getting at us and I lost my best friend, Ronnie, in the crossfire. I went on a warpath, murdering everybody that I thought was connected to that ma’fucka.

That was a real dark place in my life that I thought I had forgot. But, I was scared of the rage that I felt by just the thought. I needed to finish what I started ten years ago. He had to go too.

“You ready babe?” Selena asked, coming from out of nowhere. She wasn’t exactly smiling, but she seemed more at ease.

“Yeah,” I muttered, as my eyes traveled back to that door, then I focused on Selena and her growing belly. I reminded myself that I was about to be a daddy and couldn’t do nothing stupid to jeopardize not being able to raise my unborn. “So how yo’ cousin doing?” I asked, desperately needing to change the subject.

Selena let out a breath of air. “She’s ok, I guess… especially for what she went through. The baby is fine too.” Selena paused for a second. “If she didn’t have her seatbelt on, she would have been dead, just like the other two men that were in the car. They crashed into a bus, Carter! One man flew right through the windshield and the other died right here in this hospital.” She shook her head. She was all emotional, but I didn’t feel shit. I didn’t know them ma’fuckas.

We walked in silence all the way to the car. Once we pulled off, she spoke again. “That could have easily been us, Carter. I know you love your brother, but please just come home with me. Let’s go back to Atlanta and be a family. Wise and Milan can come stay with us until they get on their feet. Let’s just go!”

I heard her pleading with me, I even wanted to say let’s just leave, but it wasn’t that simple. Things had never been that simple for me.
