Chapter Thirty-Six

Carter

I sat in my hotel room alone, thinking about the shit that I done got myself into. Detroit brought out a side of me that I thought I buried a long time ago. I was now starting to remember why I left. I had come too far to end up in somebody's jail or a graveyard over some bullshit. But then again, Wise was my heart, so I'd die for that lil' nigga.

I heard a knock at the door, interrupting my thoughts. I knew that it was Adonnis. I told him that I needed to talk to him asap. We flew his people in from Atlanta and they were supposed to handle shit. That's where I fucked up. I made it my business to do my dirt on my own, but I’ll admit, I was slipping.

I opened the door for Adonnis and sat in the chair by the window. "Man, you know yo' people fucked up, right?" I asked with a raised eyebrow. "How the fuck they find that nigga body so quick?"

Adonnis gave me the screw face. "Man, is that what the fuck you made me get up out some pussy for? They was supposed to find the body because I told them not to hide it!"

Now I was looking at him sideways. If he was on some bullshit, I had no problem sending a slug right to his head. I fucked with Adonnis, but I fucked with myself more. I didn't completely trust no nigga.

"What the fuck you mean you told them not to get rid of the body?" I asked.

"Fuck that. Lil' bro need to send a message. He got niggas plotting on him and shit. He too soft."

My forehead wrinkled. "I suggest you tread lightly when you talk about my fucking brother," I warned, heated. I could say or think what the fuck I wanted about Wise. But, Adonnis was out of pocket for saying shit. And furthermore, lil' bro may not have been as rugged as me, but he would still knock a nigga's head clean off.

"Man, chill the fuck out nigga." Adonnis waved me off. " If that nigga was plotting, and his right-hand was plotting with that lame-ass nigga, ain't no telling what lil bro into. Now I came to the city on the strength of you. If you fuck with a ma'fucka, then I fuck with them the long way. So I sent a message for lil' bro."

I opened my mouth to say something, but Adonnis cut me off. " For real, bro. You think I would do some sloppy shit that's gone get everybody fucked up? Ain't no way it's gone trace back this way. I'm just as guilty as you and I ain't getting locked back up for no ma'fuckin body." He shot, aggressively. I believed him. He did a three year bid right before I made it to Atlanta, and the nigga still talked about that shit. He swore up and down that he wasn’t going back to no one’s prison.

I began to pull at the hairs of my beard, thinking. I should have known that Adonnis was thorough with his shit. I was just a don't trust nobody type of nigga like that. So many people done attempted to cross me in the streets.

"Right nigga. Now go get you some pussy. Yo' panties in a bunch." Adonnis chuckled when I still didn't say anything.

I cracked a half smile. "Nigga fuck you. I was just making sure shit was right. And I'm good. Yo' dick gone fall off, fucking all these random broads."

"Nah, I strap up with two condoms. I ain't raw doggin' these hoes. But... if you done fucking up my flow, I'm ‘bout to get back to these two freaks."

I just shook my head, watching as Adonnis left. Just a few months ago, I would be right there with him, tag teaming those hoes. But, that shit was old. All I wanted was Selena back and I would be straight.

Chapter Thirty-Seven

Keem

I was on some for real paranoid shit. Somebody had got to Jabari and I already knew that it had to be Wise. It was the way it was done. Whoever did it wanted to send a message. What was messing with me was the fact that I was supposed to meet up with Jabari tonight, but he was dead. Now I was starting to question if I was really talking to the nigga. Something wasn’t right. Fuck!

I had never been no scary ass nigga, however, I knew how Wise and his punk ass brother Carter got down. They had a whole army behind them and I knew that I had to be on my shit if they caught on to what Jabari and I were plotting. Damn. I had the perfect plan before that nigga started being on some bullshit.

I took a hard pull of the blunt that I was smoking, holding the smoke in my lungs, then I passed it to Sasha. She tried to act like she was all uppity, but she was a bird just like the rest of these gold-digging bitches.

Then, she was claiming that she was pregnant, and hitting the blunt harder than me. Shit, I didn’t give a fuck. It wasn’t my baby that she was carrying. I made sure to strap my shit up. I wasn’t trying to end up with some shit that I couldn’t get rid of, and I definitely wasn’t trying to pop my seed inside of her.

“I’m telling you. Wise is tripping. That bitch has his head gone so tough that it’s ridiculous. I have to get rid of her.” She sighed, shaking her head.

I started to say some slick shit, but she gave me an idea. If Wise was on some bullshit, I would snatch Milan up so quick and see what he would be saying then. He swore he was a tough ass nigga, but every man had a weakness.

“Yeah. I think he got Jabari. I’m not trusting that shit.” I shook my head. We were on our way to a hotel for the night. Ever since we had started kicking it, I had never brought her to my crib. I didn’t need her knowing where I rested my head. I wasn’t fully trusting her either. She wasn’t slick. She still wanted that nigga Wise, and she would probably do whatever it took to get him back.

“You know him and his crazy ass brother did that shit. I can’t stand his ass either. I never liked him since he got with my cousin.”

My head swung around so fast. “What you mean that nigga fuck with your cousin? Why you didn’t tell me that shit?” I hated Carter’s bitch ass and I was going to get at him on principle. I smiled devilishly. Yeah, I would start with his bitch.

Sasha kissed her teeth. “Because it’s irrelevant. Carter and Selena has been gone for years, and I don’t know that man. Plus, I never fucked with that girl like that. If she wasn’t my cousin, I wouldn’t even talk to her fake ass.”

“Damn, so she stay in Atlanta or some shit, or is she here?” I asked, trying not to sound too anxious. I heard her saying that she didn’t fuck with Carter’s bitch like that, but she was still her cousin. So I didn’t know if she was going to be on some funny shit. I needed the info on his bitch A.S.A.P, because I needed to be one step ahead.

“No, she stays right here in the city. She call herself hiding from Carter, but her dumb ass will be right back with him because she’s pregnant with that man’s baby. And Carter ain’t shit, just like Wise’s ass.”

I just nodded my head. She didn’t even know, the more that she opened her mouth, the more she was helping me plot my next move. Fuck snatching Milan up, I didn’t have real beef with Wise. It was that nigga Carter that I was gunning for. I was going to hit him where it hurts, starting with his bitch!

Chapter Thirty-Eight

Milan

I spent the night in Wise’s arms, and I never wanted to get up. His warm body pressed against mine was a feeling that I missed; the companionship with someone that you truly cared about. Jabari and I had long ago stopped the lovey dovey mushy stuff. We did what we did, then he would fall asleep on his side of the bed.

It was the ringing of my house phone that forced me to peel myself from his arms. I knew that if someone was calling, it must have been important.

“Where you going, babe?” Wise’s sleep drunk voice called out. His hand caught the strap of my thongs, and he gave it a tug, almost pulling me back onto the bed.

I chuckled, swatting his hand away. “Move boy. I know you hear the phone ringing.”

“Alright, hurry up back. I need you to take care of something for me.” His lips formed a smile, and his eyes were still closed. I began to shake my head. I wasn’t fooling with Wise like that this morning. We had to go get the kids from my mother and I had other plans for the day. If we started up, I already knew that we would be stuck in bed all day. We had so much pent-up feelings toward one another that it would take hours to release it.

Even though Jabari was an ass, I knew that I still had to stop by his mother’s house and bring the kids to be with his family. They were having a gathering for him and his mother swore up and down that I just had to be there with the kids. Jabari’s mother always loved me. She said that I was the woman that was going to get her son’s life together. However, Jabari’s ass was a grown man stuck in his ways. Now, I hated the fact that I had to play nice, knowing that I contributed to her son’s death.

When I got to the phone, the caller had hung up. They called from a private number, so I couldn’t return the call. A few seconds later, the phone rang again.

“Hello,” I answered, wondering who was calling me private. No one responded, so I said hello again. Still nothing. I hung up, placing the phone back on the cradle, attempting to make my way back to the bedroom with Wise. However, the loud thud and shattering of glass stopped me dead in my tracks. Someone had broken my front window, and that shit scared the hell out of me.

Wise came running out of the bedroom, he had his pistol in hand. He looked at me and signaled for me to go to the room and lock the door. I did as I was told, wishing that we could just disappear and go somewhere that no one knew us. I knew that this was the aftermath of the drama, and I just couldn’t wait for the smoke to clear.

Inside of the room, I grabbed my taser, and sat on the bed after closing the door. What if Jabari wasn’t dead? What if they had grabbed his brother instead of him? Just the thought caused a chill to run up my spine. Jabari and his little brother may as well have been twins, because they looked exactly alike.

I shook my head, trying to shake the thought. They had identified the body, so it had to be Jabari that was dead. The longer that I sat there, the more spooked I became.

I didn’t get to dwell on it too long. Wise came walking back into the room. He looked at me and shrugged. “I didn’t see nobody. It must have been a bad ass kids throwing rocks.” He held up a chipped piece of brown brick.  “They used this.” He added.

I didn’t say anything. Something wasn’t right. What kid would be outside playing at nine o’clock in the morning, and why did someone call me private without saying anything, seconds before a brick came crashing into my window?

***

Wise

I saw the red Chevy Impala as it skidded off, and I had to wonder who the fuck it belonged to. I didn’t get a chance to see the person’s face. The windows were deeply tented. I was mad as hell that I couldn’t make it to the front in time.

I didn’t even want to get Milan all riled up again, that’s why I came up with the first excuse that I could think of. She had been through enough and didn’t need to be stressing. Lord knows I was getting so sick of this bullshit, it seemed like ma’fuckas was coming at us from every angle.

I thought that after we took out Jabari, we would be good for a little while. But, someone was still on our head. My first mind went straight to Keem. I was wondering if it was his punk ass. He did say that he was ready to make that move on me.

But, then again, with the way that things transpired, I didn’t think it could be him. He didn’t know Milan’s house phone number. Plus, I think that if he was pulling up, he’d be letting off shots instead of a brick. Whoever called that phone wanted her to be in that living room. They was trying to fuck with her head.

For some reason, Jabari crossed my mind again. Carter was the one who grabbed him up, and his face was all messed up, so I barely recognized his features. They could have grabbed his little brother. But then again, that wasn’t possible. Jabari didn’t fuck with his brother, and the little nigga wasn’t in the streets like that. He was a college boy.

I shook the thought just as quick as it came. That nigga Jabari was dead. I shot his ass myself, so I witnessed his death with my own two eyes. Plus, I had his phone as further proof.

Sasha’s lying ass could have been the one on some crazy shit. She was crying pregnant. Plus, I knew she hated Milan. After what I been going through, I wasn’t putting nothing past no one.

“Do you got everything you need?” I asked Milan as she stuffed a few pieces of clothes into her luggage, then closed it. I told her to pack her shit and we was about to get the fuck out of her house. Instead of calling somebody to fix the door yesterday, we should have been leaving to sleep somewhere else.

I had called my realtor and told her to get on looking for us a new crib as well. Now that I knew that Keem was on that bullshit, I didn’t trust laying my head at my house, nor hers. I only stayed at Milan’s crib because I thought it would be better than staying at mine, but I guess not.

“Yeah, I just have to get the kids some stuff.” She answered, causing me to shake my head.

Fuck that. We can go to the mall and I’ll replace all their shit. I’m just ready to go. I got somebody on the way to fix the window.”

A smile creased her lips, “So you can replace their stuff, but you didn’t offer me a shopping spree?” She chuckled playfully.

I stared at her for a second, taking in her body, and the dimple that formed from her smile. Her ass could have the world if that’s what she wanted. I had no doubt in my mind that she was my soul mate. I didn’t even answer her. I just grabbed her bag and headed for the door. I took my pistol off my waist and studied my surroundings as I made it outside. Milan was hot on my heels.

“Dang. You can’t answer me? You know I was only playing. I don’t need your big head self to buy me nothing.” She shot, hopping into the car.
I shrugged. “I ain’t have to answer that shit. You already know what it is.”
That smile seemed to be painted on and I was glad that I was finally the only nigga to put it on her face. I was going to get things in order for us. I had to.

We made small talk, as we rode to her mother’s crib. I told her to call her moms and tell her the coast was clear to come home. But, I was about ready to send her mother off with the kids again. I couldn’t do that, though. I knew that her mother had a life too, and that she didn’t want to be stuck with our kids.

My phone rang, interrupting my train of thought. It was Carter calling and I answered it on the second ring.

“Bro, where you at? Meet me at the hotel now!” He spoke into the phone, not even giving me a chance to say hello. I had to wonder what the fuck he had up his sleeve now.
